It is often found that the Valve guide openings in internal combustion engine blocks are out of alignment, that is, they are not perpendicular to the face of the block or to the axis of the cam shaft. This invention relates to a device for reboring and truingthese valve guide openings.
In a device of this character, it is essential that the boring tool be perfectly centered over the valve seat in the engine block so that when the reboring operation has been completed the valve will rotate in perfect contact with its seat. It is also essential that the axis of the valve guide opening be perpendicular with the face of the engine block and with the axis of the cam shaft. If the former be not true, the valve will not seat. If the latter be not true there will be a side thrust upon the valve shafts which will result in rapid wear upon the valve shaft and guide.
To provide a reboring tool which will automatically center itself in the valve seat is the principal object of this invention.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device that will ream the valve stem guide openings in engine blocks absolutely perpendicular to the face of the block and to the axis of the cam shaft without adjustment.
Still another object is to so construct a device of this character that it may be readily attached to the present engine blocks Without the necessity of clamps or drilling and tapping additional openings.
A still further object is to so arrange the reaming device that it may be operated from one of the usual portable drilling machines.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which result in simplicity economy, and efficiency and which will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description of the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the invention in use upon an engine block. The engine block in this view is shown in vertical section.

Those parts of the usual engine block which are illustrated on the drawing will be designated as follows: Engine blocklO, cylinders 11, valve seats 12, cylinder head studs 13, valve 1 1, valve'guide 15, valve guide opening 16, valve spring 17, valve lifter 18, and cam shaft 19.
The invention comprises a vertical sleeve 20 carrying supporting flanges 21, bifurcated as shown at 31. The lower face of the flanges is planed perfectly perpendicular to the axis of the sleeve 20. In the upper extremity of the vertical sleeve 20 a bearing 22 is secured. Through which, passes a rotatable and longitudinally moveable boring shaft 23, provided at its lower extremity with a cutting blade 24.
A centering cone 25, formed on the lower extremity of a sliding bearing 26, projects at the bottom of the sleeve 20 and acts as a lower bearing for the boring shaft 23. A recess 27 is formed in the bottom of the sleeve 20 for the reception of the cone 25. A helical spring 28 is arranged to surround the shaft 23 and be compressed between the bearings 22 and 26. The cutting blade 24 is secured in place by means of a set screw 29 and is of a length equal to the desired finished diameter of the valve guide opening 16.
The bifurcations in the flanges 21 are for the reception of the cylinder studs 13 found in the usual engine block. These cylinder studs are arranged in staggered relation as illustrated in Fig. 2 so that the invention may be placed over a valve seat 12 at an angle thereby engaging two of the studs 13 in the bifurcations in the flanges 21. The angle of placement of the device is alternated as it is moved from valve seat to valve seat, as illustrated in broken line at 30, Fig. 2. The bifurcations 31 have sufficient length and breadth to allow the device to bemoved in any direction upon the engine block, after being placed on the studs.
