UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. ZIEGLER, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNO R TO THE APEX MACHINE COM- PANY, OF DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
t v -CI-IUCK.
Application filed October 2, 1924. Serial No. 741,138.
This invention consists of a new article of manufacture comprising a drill chuck having special features for the ready insertion, holding and removal of the drill in the chuck portion. 7
These features will be set forth in detail hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a section through the chuck showing the quick attaching and quick detaching mechanism;
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the quick detaching mechanism;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the quick attaching mechanism.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 refers to a tubular-member adapted to act as a chuck. Within this member is a tubular or cylindrical aperture 2 receiving the reciprocating bifurcated detaching member 3. This member has a projecting head 1 which slides in an aperture 5 in the upper end of the cylindrical member 1 and projects beyond the end 6 thereof.
The lower end of 3 is bifurcated, being provided with a pair of legs 7 which strad dle a cross pin 8 mounted transversely in the chuck 1...
The lower end of the chuck 1 has formed therein a socket portion 9, having an outwardly flaring interior cylindrical cavity 10 for receiving a correspondingly tapered split collar 11 which is formed-with a plurality of grooves 12. It is completely split by the slot 13 so that the shank of the tool 14 may be thrust within the interior of the split collar 11 and firmly held therein. It will be observed that the greater the thrust on the tool, the more securely it will be jammedwithin the collar and the more securel the tapered exterior of the collar itself will be jammed vwithin the tapered socket portion 9. The upper end of the split collar engages against the bottom ofthe bifurcated member 7 When it is desired to dislodge the tool and the split collar, a tap of ahammer on the upper end of the member 1 will result in dislodging the tool and its split collar. The cross pin 8 limits the {lownward movement of the unlocking memier 3..
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications which may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions and uses.
Having thus fully described my invent-ion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein described article of manufacture consisting of a cylindrical member having a longitudinal opening extending therethrough, the upper portion of the opening being cylindrical and the lower being tapered, an unlocking member reciprocal in the cylindrical portion of the opening, a
tapered split collar fitted to the tapered portion and itself having a cylindrical bore adapted to receive the shank of a tool, a
transverse stop pin secured to the cylindrical member, the lower end of the unlocking member being longitudinally slotted to fit over the stop pin an-d'having its lower end in contact with the top of the spli collar. In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
IVILLIAM M. ZIEGLER.
