PAT EAKIN, OF SUNLAND, CALIFORNIA.
AMUSEMEN T DEVICE.
Application filed my 6,1925.' serial No. 41,811.
This invention relates to an amusement device and the object is to provide means shaft or bar.
A further object is to provide, in connection with the foregoing, a safety net into which the user of the device will fall without injury in the event that he is unable to maintain his equilibrium.
A still further object is to provide power operated means for imparting movement to the drum or barrel.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it `being understood that modifications may be made within the scope 4of the Vclaims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming `part of this application: f
Figure l is a view of the construction 1n elevation, the longer side of the apparatus being shown.
Figure 2 is an end'elevation.
Figure 3 is a detail in section showing means for connecting a cable or rope to the drum or barrel mounted on the horizontal shaft.
Figure 4 is a detail view, in perspective, showing a ring for effecting the above named connection between the end flange, shown in Figures l and 8, and the cable.
Figure 5 is a view in elevation showing a structure similar to that illustrated inv Fig ure 1, but with means added for applying power to the movement of the drum or barrel on the horizontal shaft.
In carrying out the invention, I provide a base of suitable construction, designated 10, and at opposite ends thereof I provide uprights ll and 12 mounting bearings in which horizontal` shaft or bar 14 is rotatably supported. The bearings are shown indetail in Figure l in which a broken away portion of onestandard permits the showing of the bearing in vertical section. Inner and outer )lates 15 and 1G are positioned on opposite sides of the standard, and are con-i nested by means of bolts 1'?, and. the Steeve or race-way 18 surrounds the shaft 14 and also surrounds a series of rollers 19, forming a Vroller bearing. i
On this shaft 14 a barrel or drum 20 is mounted, this element being slidable longitudinally of the shaft andibeing rotatable thereon. End fianges, or flanged Aportions 21 provide means for receiving and retaining a ring element, or elements 2l, of the type shown in Figure 4.
Pulleys 23 and 24 are mounted respectively in the end standards or uprights, and cables or ropes 25 and 26 pass over these pulleys, are connected at their inner Vends with ring members 2l, and at their outer ends have connection with ring members 28 and 29, by means of which the barrel`20 may be moved by an assistant or by a boy friend.
The user of the device endeavors to maintain his equilibrium on the rotatable and slidable barrel 20, and as an aid in doing this a guide rope or cable 3Q is provided, one end passing over pulley 3lmounted in one of the standards, this end having a weight 32 connected therewith. An enlargement or knot 38 prevents the cable from passing too far over the pulley 3l. The other end of cable 30 extends around pulley 34 and passes thence downwardly and has connection with a weight 35. The
weights tend to keep the rope or cable 30 in the position desired.
In order to facilitate access to the moveable portion of the uprights, stair-ways. are employed, and it will be yobserved from Figure 2 that a similar upper platform is provided and is designated 38, sta- irways 39 and 40 leading to the platform from opposite Asides of the structure. This' arrangement is duplicated at the other end of the uprights. In order that the person Yattempting to maintain his equilibrium on the barrel may not receive a serious fall, I provide a safety net, designated 42, this net including an outer cable or the like 43 passing through the apertured upper end portions of posts 44, and the rope 43 being held taut by springs 45. Other springs such as those shown at 46 may be located 4as desired and all ofthe springs are suitably anchored at their outer' or lower ends.
In Figure 5 a structure similar to that in Figure l is illustrated, but power oper ated means are provided for movin the barrel 2G longitudinally of the sha; 141
It is convenient to employ for this purpose an electric motor 50, the armature shaft of iin which is extended or has coupled thereto a shaft 5l mounting beveled pinions 52 and 53 which are splined on the shaft, the pinions having connected therewith collars 54 operated by means of lever arms 55 pivoted at 56. These arms are connec-ted by a. rod 57 secured to the lever arms by means of pivots and permitting` the pinions 52 and 53 to be thrown into mesh with large gear wheel 58. rlhe pinions will be thrown in reverse relation, that is, one will move intoV mesh with gear wheel 58 when the other moves out of mesh with reference thereto. Lever arms are reversed by means of a cable GO operated by drum 6l rigid with reference to gear wheel 58. Cable 60 carries enlargements or engaging devices 63 which come into contact with the levers and throw the latter in the required direction for ell'ecting a reverse drive. Cable 60 passes over lower pulleys 641 and G5 and over upper pulleys 66 and (57 and passes thence horizontally, the end po-rtions bein-g connected at GS and G9 with devices similar to ring members 21 of Figure Il. lt will be apparent that when the drum (il has moved cable G0 to a given extent, one of the engaging devices 63 will come into contact with the adjacent lever arm 55 and will cause the reverse of the driving mechanism by means of the construction described in detail. rlhe reverse movement of drum 20, after it has reached its limit of travel, will be effected in a similar manner.
The barrel 2O serves the purpose of a seat or saddle member of unusual construction, and the manner of mounting this seat is a distinctive feature of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
l. In a device of the class described, a supporting structure, a rotatable shaft mounted horizontally thereon, and a slidable member mounted on the shaft and adapted to support a person, a rotatable member, devices adapted to engage the rotatable member at diainetrically opposite points, and means having connection with and automatically controlled by the position of the slidable member for shifting the engaging,V devices, in reverse relation, into and. out of contact with the rotatable member.
2. In a device of the class described, a supporting' structure, a shaft mounted l'iorizontally thereon, and a rotatable and slidable member mounted on the shaft and adapted to support a person, and tension operating means connected with the slidable member and non-rotatable with reference thereto.
3. In a device of the class described, a supporting` structure, a rotatable shaft mounted horizontally thereon, a slidable member mounted on the shaft and adapted to support a person, and intermittent power operated means for imparting longitudinal movement to the slidable member, said means including flexible devices, extending from the rotatable member, and mechanical-ly controlled winding means for the flexible d vices.
Ll. In a device of the class described, a supportingT structure, a rotatable shaft mounted horizontally thereon, a slidable men'iber mounted on the shaft and adapted to support a person, and means includingr cables automatically and alternately placed under tension for imparting longitudinal movement to the slidable member.
In a device of the class described, a sumporting structure, a. rotatable shaft mounted horizontally thereon, a slidable member mounted on the shaft and adapted to support a person, and power operated means including automatic reversing machanism for imparting movement tor the slidable member.
5. In a device of the class described, a supporting; structure, a rotatable shaft mounted horizontally thereon, a slidable member mounted on the shaft and adapted to support a person, and reverselyy extending cables connected with the slidable member for imparting longitudinal movement thereto, with reference to the shaft, and a winding element engaged by both cables and applying` tension to the cables alternately.
In testimony whereof affix my ture.
si gna- PAT EAKIN.
