TUBE T01?.
Application mea' september 2e, 1925. serial Natasee.
This invention relates to improvements in containers and has especialv relation to dispensing devices designed for use in connection with flexible tubes ofthe type ordinarily used as containers for pastes, creams and the like, for example, tooth'pastes or shaving creams.
An object of the present invention is the -provision of a cap or closure' which may be made a part of the original tube or container, or may be removably attached to the present types of tubes in such manner as to permit the contents of the tube' to be discharged without removing the cap or closure.
Another object of the invention is the provision o-means included in the cap to automatically close the tube and to prevent any paste from remaining at the discharge open'- ing'of said tube. y
With the above and other objects in view, the invention 'further includes the following novel features `and details of construc- I tion, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated inthe accompanying drawings and pointed out inthe appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation showing a tube with the invention applied.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view with the invention in section.
Figure 3 is a view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fi ure 2.'
Figure 4 is an en view. y
Fi ure 5 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the closure made a part of the original tube.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corre- 40 Sponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a tube of the type commonly used for tooth pastes, shaving creams and so forth, being provided with liexible walls and with an exteriorly threaded neck 11 through 5 which extends a discharge opening 12. This opening is usually closed by a removably threaded cap which frequently becomes misplaced and is usually troublesome in its removal and replacement.. In addition, theA user frequently forgets to replace the cap so that the contents ofthe tube and especially that portion adJacent. the discharge opening loses Aits moisture and is thereforel unt for use. u The present invention overcomes these and many other disadvantages by providing an automatic closure for the discharge opening and for this purpose there `is provided an arcuate transversely channeled cap 13 which has extending from its opposite side edges ears 14. The cap 13 in the form of the invention illustrated 'in Figures 1 to 4. receives an attaching member 15v andthis member is provided with an interiorly threaded socket 16 for removable attach- 65 ment to the threaded neck and with an opening 17 designed to register with the opening 12. The attaching member l5 is provided with pivot studs 18 which extend through openings provided in the ears 14 70 so that the cap 13 is pivotally mounted upon the member 15. The cap is provided with' an opening 19 having a beveled edge 20, but this opening is normally spaced from the opening 17 so that'the tube is normally 75 closed. The tube is yieldingly held in closed position by means of a spring 21 arranged within the cap and having one of its ends bearing against an end wall 22 of the cap and against the adjacent side ofthe attaching-member 15. The opposite end ,wall 23 of the cap forms, a stop to limit pivotal movement of the cap n one direction. p
It ywill be seen om the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that the invention may be removably attached to an ordinary threaded neck tubeinfsuch manner as to normally close the discharge opening of the tube. When it is desired to remove a part of the contents of the tube9o `the cap may be opened against the action of the spring 21 by pressing the thumb upon the end wall 22 and at thesame time ,the side walls ofthe tube may -be squeezed with the same lhand. When suicient pastelor cream has been removed, thecap may be released, whereupon the beveled `edge 20 will move across the opening 17 and cut ofi' the supply of paste or cream and prevent any from adheringfaround the outer edge of the opening.
In Figure 5 of the drawings, the cap or closure 13 is identical in construction with the cap or closure 13 previously described except that the attaching member 15 is dis- 105 pensed with and the pivot lugs or studs extend directlyv from the neckv 11 of the tube 10 and the cap thus forms a part of the original tube.
By removably attaching the cap as in 11 the first described form 'of the invention, the same cap may be used for a number. of different. tubes.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved .to make such changes as properly fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what' is claimed is:- 'y
1. In combination with la. container hav ingr a neck and a discharge openingT extending therethrough, a substantially arcuate transversely channel shaped cap adapted to receive the neck and close the opening. said cap having an opening therein adapted to register with the opening through the neck, ears extending from opposite edges of the channel shaped cap and pivotally mounted upon opposite sides ofthe neck and a. spring within the channel shaped capbetween one end of the latter and the neck ot the container to normally hold the cap in. closed position.
2. In combination with a` container having a neck and a discharge openingY extending therethrough, a substantially arcuate transversely channel shaped cap adapted to extend over the neck and close the opening. said cap having an opening therein adapted to register with the neck opening. spring means within the cap upon the outside of the neck to yieldingly close the cap and means to pivotally and removably secure the cap upon the neck.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
