The invention relates to ironing machines and its object is to provide a simple, cheap and edcient machine. a
Another object is to provide an ironing t# machine with a novel, simple and eiiicient driving mechanism.
The invention. consists in the novelA construction, varrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described' and illustrated l0 1n the drawings, in which illustrative draw- 1n szigure 1 is a front elevational view, partly in section, of a machine vembodying the invention; Fig. 2 an enlarged, sectional view l of the clutch o erating mechanism; Fig. 3 an end view o the support for the inner end of the lower roll; Fig. 4 an outer end view of the lower roll, Fig. 5 a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 4. l
Referring to the illustrative embodiment of the invention 1 is the main frame or standard of the machine having suitable legs 2 with castors 3 to form a base of suitable weight to cause the machine to stand i 25 firmly on the floor.
The frame or standard 1 is preferably hollow to house certain of the operating parts about to be described. lln the upper portion of the frame is a shaft 4 carried by 5W the bearings 5 and 2O formed on the frame. A worm gear 6 is loose on this shaft and a flange 7 projects laterally from its forward peripheral edge, the inner peripheral base 8 of which is bevelled, thus causingl the 35 flanged worm gear to be a clutch member as well, and on the outer peripheral face of which teeth are formed to form a gear 9 on the worm gear 6 that meshes with a pinion 10 secured to a hollow shaft 11. The im shaft 11 is revolubly mounted on a pipe or other hollow member 12. fixed in the main frame and projecting forwardly therefrom, its outer end being supported by the bracket arm 13 which projects from the top of the main frame or standard 1. In the present embodiment of the invention the member '12 serves as a gas burner to heat the upper roll 14 that is revolubly'mounted on the member. The inner end of the roll 14 is apertured to receive the outer end of an arm 15 which projects from the shaft 11 and by which arm the roll is caused to rotate.
The worm gear 6 is in mesh `with a worm 16 suitably mounted in the standard 1 and adapted to be driven by an electric motor 17 suitably supported on the standard, the motor being suitably connected to the worm for said purpose, as by pulley wheels on the motor shaft and worm respectively and a Abelt engaged thereon (not shown), the lat- 20, the inner ends of which pins abut the opposed face of the washer 19. The opposite ends of the pins project from the bearing and abut the face of a washer 23 which abuts the opposed face of an internally threaded collar 24 engaged on a threaded portion 25 of the shaft 4, borne by thebearings 5 and 20 and by the bearing 26 carried by a bracket 27 adjustably secured to the bracket 28 that is secured to the standard l.
A bearing 29 is eccentrically mounted on the shaft 4 adjacent to the collar 24 and is connected to the collar by the pins 30. A wheel-like member 31 is revolubly mounted upon this bearing 29 and one end of a cylinder 32 is secured to the periphery of the member 31, a similar member 33 being secured adjacent the opposite end of the cylinder and revolubly mounted upon a bearing 34 that is eccentrically mounted on the shaft 4 and is held in iXed posi-tion relatively to the bearing 29 by the tie bar 35 secured to it and to the bearing 29. Suitable padding is secured about the cylinder 32. buitable members 36 are inserted at selected points within the! cylinder to reinforce the same.`
A disk 37 is secured by the set screw 37n to the shaft 4 adjacent the outer face of the member 33, the disk having a slot 38 therein (Fig. 4) in which is en aged a screw 39 that projects from the face of the member 33.
An arm 40 projects laterally from the projecting end of the bearing 29, and one or more apertures 41 are formed in the arm in any one of which a bolt may be inserted for connecting the upper end of a link 42 to the arm. The link extends downwardly through a slot 43 in the wall of the standard l, and its lower end is pivoted to one end of a lever 44 pivoted at 45 to one of the legs of the base. The outer end of the lever is adapted to be engaged by the .foot of the operator. A spring 46 is placed onl the link between the lever and the base to oppose the upward movement of the link.
In operation, with the electric motor 1n operation, the latter drives the, worm and the combined gear, and clutch member 6 1s thereby driven to cause the upper hot roll to rotate continuously while the power is turned on. When the operator depresses the foot lever, the link is moved upwardly to cause the bearings 29 and 34 to rotate or swing upwardly and rearwardly on the shaft 4. Since these bearings are eccentrically mounted on the shaft their upward movement will cause the cylinder 82 to move toward and into contact with the upper hot roll, the point of contact being behind the vertical plane of the axis of the hot roll. The swinging movement of the bearing 29 causes the collar 24 to rotate and travel on the threaded portion of the shaft 4 toward the bearing 20. The pins 21 are thereby moved longitudinally to cause the clutch member 6 to frictionally engage the combined gear-clutch member 6, whereupon the shaft 4 |will be rot-ated counter-clock-wise and in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the roll 14. Since the disk 37 is secured to the shaft, it, by means of the pin 39 and slot 38, drives the cylinder, the slot accommodating the eccentricity of the cylinder. In practice the upper roll travels about five times as rapidly as the lower roll thus accomplishing a very desirable ironing effect or polish on the mate* rials.
The control of the lower roll is positive and practically instantaneous. Since the lower roll, as it is moved toward the upper roll, travels upwardly and rearwardly in the arc of a circle, the forward edge of the article Eto be ironed may be placed on the lower roll and moved by the roll as the latter moves toward the upper roll and thereby be carried under the,y upper roll so that the extreme forward edge of the article will be ironed immediately.
The lower roll may be moved toward the upper roll as the covering wears out on the lower roll by adjusting the rod 27 in the bracket 28, suflicient play being provided in `the bearings 5 and 20 to permit of this adjustinent.
It will be noted that the instant the pedal is released, the springs 6b and 4G restore the roller 32 to normal position. The parts are of light construction so that the roller is easily swung into engagement with the heated member 14.v
What I claim is:
1. In an ironing machine, the combination of a `heated member, a revoluble shaft, a roller supported on the shaft and adapted to be swung thereon into Contact with the heated member, a driven member loosely mounted on the shaft, means responsive to the swinging movement of the roller to connect the shaft to the driven member and means connecting the shaft to the roller for driving the roller.
2. In an ironing machine, the combination of a heated member, a revoluble shaft, a roller supported on the shaft and adapted to be driven thereby, the roller being adapted to be swung on said shaft into contact with the heated member, a clutch member loosely supported on the shaft, means to rotate the clutch member, a second clutch member keyed to the shaft and adapted to engage the loose clutch member, and means having engagement with the lteyed clutch member and responsive to the swinging movement of the roller to cause the clutch members to engage.
3. ln an ironing machine, the combination of a heated member, a revolubly mounted shaft, a roller eccentricall mounted on the shaft and adapted to e swung thereon into engagement with the heated member, driving means connecting the shaft to the roller, a driven clutch member loosely mounted on the shaft, a slidable clutch member secured to the shaft, a travelling member on the shaft having a connection to the slidable clutch member and adapted to cause the latter member to engage the loose clutch member, said travelling member being caused to move by the swinging movement of the roller.
4. In an ironing machine, the combination of a heated member, a revolubly mounted shaft, a pair of bearings eccentrically mounted on the shaft, and adapted to be rotated thereon, a roller revolubly mounted upon the bearings, means connecting the roller to the shaft for rotating the roller, a driven clutch-member loosely mounted on the shaft, a slidabley clutchmember adapted to connect the loose clutch member to the shaft, a travelling member' revolubly mounted on the shaft having a connection to the slidable member and to one of the said bearings and adapted 'when said bearing is rotated to cause the clutch members to engage.
5.
