UNITED STATES MAX KAI- ILE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE CLAMP.
Application filed October 20, 1925. Serial No. 63,659.
This invention relates to improvements in clamps for molds or the like, and has for one of its principal objects the provision of an adjustable clamp to be used with molds such as employed in metal foundries or the like, whereby the sections or molds may be securely clamped together and positively maintained in operating position as long as desired.
One of the important objects of this invention is to provide, in a clamp for molds, a plurality of clamping members adjustable with respect to each other, and provided with means for securely and positively main taining said clamping members in any desired adjusted relation to each other and to the mold.
Still another and further important object of this invention is the provision, in a clamp for molds or the like, of means for retaining the two elements of the clamp at all times in co-operative relation with each other, said means further operating to provide a support or clamping member whereby the two relatively movable elements are securely locked in any adjusted relation with respect to each other.
Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the accompanying drawings and following specification.
The invention, in a preferred form, 1s illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings;
Figure 1 is a vertical side elevation of the improved clamp of this invention, a portion of a mold with which the clamp is adapted to be used being shown in section.
Figure 2 is a vertical end view of the 1mproved clamp of this invention.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure at is a detail sectional View taken on the line 4 t of Figure 1, parts being shown in dotted lines.
As shown in the drawings:
The reference numerals 5 indicate generally a mold having two parts or halves adapted to be fitted together when pouring metal, as in the usual construction.
The improved clamping element of this invention comprises a pair of relatively movable posts or the like 6 and 7 respectively, the post 6 being provided with a series of notches 8, each of said notches having one horizontal face and having the other face cut into the material of the post at an angle.
At one end of the post 6 is firmly aliixed by means of a rivet or the like 9a guide strap or other similar element 10 which surrounds the post 7 and is firmly and substantially immovably attached to the post 6, as best shown in Figure 3. This strap or guide 10 is of a dimension sufiicient to just permit an easy sliding motion of the post 7- relative to the post 6. I
At the lower end of the post 7 is positioned a clamping loop or similar element 11 in the form of a strap of wire of substantially circular cross-section, this strap being pivotally mounted in a suitable opening 12 in the post 7, and of such a size as to encircle the post 6, both the posts being preferably of square cross-section.
The clamping element 11 is adapted to co-operate with any one of the notches 8, thereby maintaining the clamping element in desired position with respect to the mold 5, as best shown in Figure 1.
The plurality of notches is provided for the adaptation of the clamping element to a number of molds which are ofstandard sizes, thereby permitting a spacing of the notches 8 on the pole or post 6 so as to permit of a ready application of the clamp to any form of mold and without the necessity of any slow or laborious adjustment. Further, the shape of the notches 8 positively prevents any accidental dislocation of the clamping loop 11, while at the same time allowing of a ready withdrawal of the same by the operator whenever it. is desired to separate the portions of the mold 5.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction varied throughout a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A clamping element, including in combination, a pair of posts relatively movable with respect to each other, a hook integral with each of said posts, notches in one of said posts along the entire outer face thereof, and a clamping means pivotally mounted in the other post for co-operation with said notches.
2. A clamping element, including in combination, a pair of posts relatively movable with respect to each other, a hook integral With each of said posts, notches in one of said posts along the entire outer facethereof, and a clamping means pivotally mounted in the other post for co-operation with said notches, together with a strap element on the first post rigidly attached thereto and extending outwardly therefrom to surround the second post and maintain the same in desired clamping relation.
3. A clamping element, including in combin-ation, a pair of posts relatively movable with respect to each other, a hook integral with each of said posts, notches in one of said. posts along the entire outer face thereof, anda clamping means pivotallymounted in the other post for cooperation with said notches, one of the sides of each of said notches extending at a right angle to the outer face of the post, and the other side forming an acute angle therewith.
l. A clamping element, including in combination, a pair of posts relatively movable with respect to each other, a hook integral with each of said posts, notches in one of said posts along the entire outer face thereof, and a clamping means pivotally mounted in the other post for co-operation with said notches, one of the sides of each of said notches extending at a right angle to the outer face of the post, and the other side forming an acute angle therewith, the side extending at right angles being in a plane at right angles to the direction of pull for positively receiving the supporting end of the said pivoted clamping member.
In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name.
MAX KAI-ILE.
