My invention relates t'oa mechanism for orming the hinges of lasts for shoes;
It is'theobjeot ofm'y invention to PIOVlClG a process and mechanism for forml'ng the hinge'portions of a ooden last, which lasts are used for the purpose of manufacturing shoes. t
It will be" understood that such hinges must be formed With great accuracy by severing the last body at predetermined angles and curves. It is also essent al that the severing of the last into 'tyvo'parts and the removal of the surplus material be accomplished Without injury to the last body.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a mechanism which Will accurately effect these severing operations of my process. 7
It is a further object toprovidesuch a mechanism Which will duplicate the same operations in the same Way repeatedly, so that there will be uniformity in the productresulting from the practicefof my process and the use of my mechanism,

The third feature of the machine is the lateral movement of the saw for the d fferent positioning of'the saw relative to the last body, atthe will of the operator. r r I It will be observed in this machine that it is unnecessary, unless desired, to demount the last body from its holder during the several cuts which are taken through the last body. It is also possible to adjust the last body upon its holder at a position away from the saw, thus lending a considerable factor of safety to the operation of the machine.
As to the details of the machine:
7 It ismounted upon standards 10. These standards carry a cross member or guide 11, upon which is mounted the saw carriage or support 12. This saw carriage slides laterally, due to the operation thereon of a shif ing lever 13, which is pivoted thereto at is.
This shifting lever is connected to a second lever 15, which projects adjacent to the operator, so that the' operators hand or knee may move this lever, and thus shift the saw laterally of the machine,

and a belt 21 is in turn mounted upon the pulle This belt is driven from any suitable source of power, such as from the pulley 22, which is mounted on a conventional shaft, which in turn carries the pulley 23 fixed thereon, and a loose pulley 24, which alternately engage with the main driving belt 25. These details are not of the essence of this invention in any way. 1
The movement of the carriage and the saw to the left hand is resisted by the helical spring 26, which is seated at 27 in the side of the carriage 12 at one end, and at its other end is seated in the standard 10 in a pocket 28. The position of this spring in the pocket is determined by the set-screw 29 and the lock-nut 30.
The limits of movement of the saw in either direction are fixed by the set-screws 31' and 32 carried by the standards on eitherv side of the carriage. Mounted on these vertically standards, or upon a portion of them, is a moving support moving in a guide way. The vertical member of this supportis designated 33, and has a dovetailed por tion 34 sliding in a dovetailed groove in one of the standards, on the exterior thereof, as at A threadedeye 36 carried by the vertical member 33 engages with a worm 3'7,
which is actuated by a hand wheel 38, so i that the elevation of this portion of the mechanism may be adjusted.

This plate, which runs transversely of the machine from a'point adjacent the saw to a point adjacent the operator, is provided with a dovetailed groove l1, in which a dovetailed member 1 2 travels. The dovetailed.member 42 forms the base or carrier for the lastholder'. This carrier is designated 43, and projects upwardly. and laterally from the saw in an, arch-shaped neck 44:, uponwhich is mounted pivotally the lioldingplate 45. It is upon this holding plate that are located the two retaining pins 46 and 47 upon which the last is mounted. lit is therefore possible to move the last to and from the o1 era-tor or laterally of the operator. it is possible to adjust the extent of the rotation of the last on the holding plate, and it is also possible to adjust the position of one pin on the holding plate to the other. It is possible to vary the position of the saw laterally.
With these several adjustments all within the ready reach of the operator, T have provided a machine for this step ofcthe process which is readily adjustable to varying conditions, sizes, and dimensions. It is also possible to vary the entire elevation of the last-- supportingstructure by the worm. 37 and the hand wheel r The mechanism to effect the second step f the process, namely, the hinge-forming step, is as follows: I
I provide a table 67, upon which there is mounted a plate 68. This plate carries an adjustable stop 69. The stop has a slot "70 for the reception of the adjusting bolt 71 carried by the plate 68. A nut 72 fixes the stop 69 in any predetermined position. This stop is used for limiting the movement of the carrying plate 73, as will be further described hereinafter. This carrying plate 73 I is pivoted upon the supporting plate by a 7st is adjacent to and connected with a projecting finger 75. A semi-circular cut-away portion or recess, known as a sawslot, is formed in the plate 73 as at 76, ad
jacent to the finger 75. One part of this plate carries the pin 77, and the other part of the plate carries thepin 78, which is adjustable in the carrying plate 73 in the slot 79. Located adjacent to this saw-slot in this carrying plate is a vertically moving bandsaw 80. The last is mounted upon the pins with the saw substantially parallel to and closely adjacent to the base 7 of the cut-away portion in the top of the last which resulted from the previous step in the process. The lastand holding plate 7 3' can then be moved about the pivot, thus forming the semi-circula-r hinge, by the saw cutting away the wood along the hinge line as at 8 in Figure A supplementary positioning arrangement is provided in having the plate 68, which is a relatively heavy plate, pivotally mounted upon the table 67 by means of the link 81, which is pivoted at 82 to the table 67, and connected at 88 to the plate 68. It is positioned by the stop 8%.
By this arrangement, it is possible to mount the last on the carrying block with the plate 68 away from the saw, and then to bring the entire mechanism bodily adjacent to the saw, after which time the carrythe saw. This enables the operator tomount the last and adjust it, with respect to the carrying plate 73 and the plateGS, without being in proximity to the saw.
It will also be observed that the table 67 is provided with a saw-slot 86.

This block 88 has at its outer end'a cutaway portion substantially V-shaped as at 92 to accommodatethe saw. Mountedupon the block adjacent to this cut-away portion, is a carrying plate 98, having the pin 94;, which projects into a hole in one half of the last, the hole of the other half of the last adapted to receive a pin 94 mounted on the block This plate 93 is adjustable on the block 88 through .a bolt 95 carried by the block which works in a, slot 96 in the plate A nut 97 serves to locate the plate v93 on the block 88 at predetermined positions. The block itself is limited-in its position on the table 67 by the stop 98. By moving the block and the last mounted thereon against the saw 80, the slightly circular cut 9 is taken, to sever the two halves of the lastfrom one another.-
Thus I am enabled to form from a single block by my process and mechanism, a hinged last.
It will be understood-that I desire to for moving said carrier to and from said i saw, a holding plate pivotally mounted on said carrier adjacent said saw, said plate having a cut-away portion for the reception of the saw as the plate is moved with the last thereon, means on the holding plate for supporting said last on either side of the portion being cut. 7

In a lastliinging machine, a frame, a transversely moving saw support mounted on said frame, means for moving said support on said frame having its actuating end adjacent an operator, a last carrier, a support therefor mounted on said frame, means for moving said carrier to and from said saw, a holding plate pivotallv mounted on said carrier adjacent saidsaw, said plate having a cut-away portion for the reception of the saw as the plate is moved With the last thereon, means on the holding plate for supporting said last on either side of the portion being out, means for moving the I holding plate to regulate the cut in the last,
and means for limiting the movement of said regulating means. I
4. In a last-hinging machine, a frame, a transversely moving saw support mounted on said frame, means for moving said support on said frame havingit-s actuating end.
