The present invention relates to washing machinesv of the class wherein the tub is 'fixed and the water in the tub is circulated lby a prl'iellei;l It differs from prior machines of this c'lassin hav'ing the entire path of the circulating water wholly within the confines of the tub, instead of partly in the tub and partly in a conduit extraneous to the tub, as has been proposed heretofore.
The chief objects of the invention are to provide a simple machineo the class mentioned, to cleanse solely by currents of water supplied with soap or other cleansing agent,
l to aerate the articles being cleansed, to construct and arrange' the machine parts so that thearticles will engage only fixed parts, to positively force thel air and water through the clothes being washed, to provide a simple arrangement of gears, and to make all theV parts readily available for replacement and repair. l v
TheA various' features and advantages of the invention will be more fully understood upon reference to the following detailed description; taken in connection with the accompanyi'rig drawing, and the scope of the invention will be particularly pointed out inthe appended claims. The vertical walls of the tubs 12 and 13I are circular in horizontal section and unite' at their lower ends with more or less conical bottoms 14 and 15. The Wash tub bottom 14 has a flat central portion 15. A perforated upper bottom 16 is secured at its upper edge to the interior of the tub walls and is upturned at its lower end to provide a tubular aperture into which the tube or conduit 17 is iitted. The greater portion of the bottom 16 is spherical in curvature, as clearly illustrated. The tube 17 is secured at its upper end to the upturned portion 18 of the. upper bottom 16. The latter is provided with a large number of perforations 19. The lower end of the tube 17 terminates at the fiat central portion 15 of the bottom of the tub and is there suitably secured.' The interior of the tube 17 is in communication with the space 2O between the bottoms 14 and 16 through apertures 21 in the tube 17. The upper end of this tube is threaded in ternally 'for the reception of an extensin tube 17 which is cooperatively threaded externally at its lower end. In ordinary wasliing operations the extension tube 17 will be removed and the tube 17 alone will suilice to give the necessary circulation. But in washing heavy articles, as rugs, blankets, etc., I preferably use the extension tube. Thus', whether thc tube 17 be used or not, al passage is provided from the space 2O below the bottoni 19 to the space 22 above theupper bottom 1G. A. shaft 23 extends vertically upward into the tube 17 and is provided at its upper end with a propeller 24, the latter being rigidly secured to the shaft.A `To provide a watertight connection the shaft 23 passes through a stuiiing box 25 in the por tionflo of the tub bottom. The lower end ot' the sha-tt 23 is provided with a bevel gear 26 which meshes with a driving bevel gear pinion on a horizontal shaft 28. The lat ter is j ournaled in hangers 29 and 30 mounted upon certain of the frame members. An electric motor 31 is also carried by the franse lili) members 11 of the machine .and is posiA tioned so las to have its shaft Connected to shaft 28 by a coupling 32. Besides the openings 21 in thc tube 17, there is an air supply opening 33 toward the upper end oft' the tube. This opening connects directly with the interior ot' an air sup ly pipe 34 which preferably follows the un er side o the upper bottom. 16 and the vertical wall of the tub terminates at a point well above the water line 35. The upper end of the pipe 34 is provided with a valve 3G by which the air supply, to the tube 17 may be regulated or, it desired, absolutely cut olf. A cover 3l) having a cooperating downwardly extending lange el() and a central handle el, serves to close the openmgfhe drier tub 13 is provided with similar flanges 42 and 43, and a similar cover 44, haring a. peripheral llange l5, and a handle 46. The tub 12? is also provided with a. stalling box Ll? through which a vertical shaft 48 extends. This shaft carries the drier basket lll) which rotates wit-hin the tub 13. The lower end of the shaft Lt8 is journaled in a horizontal arni 50 upon the hanger 30, and is held from dropping by a ixed collar 51 upon the shaft. shaft is provided with a bevel gear 52 which .neshes with a similar bevel pinion 53 on the shaft 28.
The wash tub 12 has the horizontal portion 15 of its bottoni apertured for a drain connection which, in the present instance. includes a valve 5l connected with a drain hose 55. The water from the tub l2 is drawn oli by opening the valve 54 and ullowingv the water to pass through the hose 55. In the ease of the drier tub l3, the bottom 15 of the tub is apertured,andthe hose 56 is directly connected to the connection provided at the aperture. The hose 5G is of suflicient length to allow its upper end to be brought to the top of the tub 13 and there held in place by a clip 57 when it is not desired to drain the tub. lVhen the tub;`
is to be drained then the hose 56 is lowered so as to lie below the bottom of the tub and then the water in the 'latter will run oli. Similarly, when not in use, the hose 55, which is of sullieient length for the purpose, may be held up away from the floor by passing its upper end between the yielding ineinbers of a clip 5T on the tub 12.
In order to permit the washing machine to run independently of the drier, and the drier independently of the washing machine, I provide clutches 58 and 59 in association with the pinions 53 and :2T respectively, upon the shaft 2x5. The clutch members may he actuated in the case ot' clutch 58 by a lever 60, and in the case of clutch 59 by a lever 6l. The lever 6l is connected by a linliI 62 to a bell crank lever (i3 pivoted to the frame ofthe machine. rl`he lever 53 is in turn connected by a link 64 to a manually operated bell crank lever 65 ivoted upon a bracket secured to the side ot the tub lf2 in a position convenient to the one using the machine. A
'l'ho lower end of the y meshes retaining segment 66 is also secured to the tub 12 and cooperates with a latch 67 on the handle of the lever 65 to hold the latter in properl positions. The lever (50 is similarly actuated by a hand lever (35 of the saine eonstruction as the lever 65 but loc-ated upon the tub 13, the connections being provided through the similar link 62', bell crank lever A63 and link 6l. In the latter there will be a central upward current which divides into radiating currents which pass downward near the wall of the tub and thence through the perlfoi'ations 19 into the space 20, us indicated generally by the arrows in Fig. l. The repeated appllcation of these currents ot' water to the clothes will thoroughly' wash them. Of course, ordinarily, too, air 'l'roni the outside ot the tub will be supplied through the pipe 3% to the opening 33 in the tube 17, and thus the een trzrl rush of water will take up the air thus supplied, and the water well mixed with air will be a lied to the clothes. Thus the latter will A aol-ated while bein4 cleansed. When it is idesired to stop the was :ing operation, it is lonly necessary to throw out 'the clutch 59 or, if desired, stop the motor 3l.
At the conclusion of/thcwashing operation, the cover 39 will be removed and the clothes lifted from the tub 12 into the basket t9 in the drier tub 13. The clutch 5S will then be thrown, after having started the motor 31, if it has been idle, and shaft 48 with the drying basket 19 rotated. The gear wheels 52 and 53 are proportioned so as to cause the basket 49 to rotate athigh speed. ln order to carry oli" the vater which is forced from the clothes in the basket the drain hose' 56 is lowered so as to lie below From the above description it will he seen that l have provided a washing machine in which all paths of the circulating-water lie Wholly within the contines ofthe tub. Obviouslyythis might be accomplished With a structure which would be modified in certain respects from that illustrated. I, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the specific disclosure, but aim to cover by the terms of the appended claims all such alternations and modifications as rightly come within the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as newl and desire to secure by a patent of-the United States is:
1. A washing machine comprising a tub, an upper perforated bottom lixed in said tub and spaced from the tub bottom, a central tube extending through said upperbottom and communicating with the space between said bottoms, an air supply pipe terminating at its outer end at a point above the Water line of the tub and at its inner end communicating with said central tube, a shaft extending through the tub bottom into said tube, a propeller on said shaft within said tube, and means for driving said shaft.
2. A washing machine comprising a tub having a conical bottom, `an upper perforated curved bottom spaced from said conical bottom, acentral cylindrical tube extending through said upper bottom and communicating with the space between -said bottoms and terminating above said upper bottom, a shaft extending through said conical bottom into said tube, a propeller mounted on said shaft, an air supply pipe opening into said tube and extending along the under lhaving a conical bottom,
