Description

June 8, 1926.
A. BOUCH ER INDEX- Filed Feb. '7
WITNESSES Patented June 8, 1926.
ALEXANDER nooonnn, or DEDHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
INDEX.
Application filed February 7, 1925. Serial No. 7,620.
My invention relates to an index and particularly to an index in which a turnable structure is equipped with a multiplicity of indexes disposed about the axis of said structure.
The general object of my invention is to provide an index of the indicated type in which the individual indexes are so mounted as to be capable of being slid laterally outward to increase the visibility of the index.
Morespecifically, an object of the invention is to provide a structure of extreme simplicity and the maximum strength and of a character to promote convenience in the assemblage of the parts and in manipulating the index when in use.
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an index embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a view partly in vertical section and partly in elevation, showing one of the indexes and the means for mounting the same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail on the lines 8 3 of Fig. 2. 7
In carrying out my invention in practice in accordance with the illustrated example, a base 10 is provided, supporting a reel comprising a lower disk 11, a spindle 12 rising therefrom, and an upper disk 13.
Supported on the disks 11, 13 and disposed about the axis of the spindle of the standard 12 is a series of frames 14, eachcomprising a horizontal top member 15 and a horizontal bottom member 16, said members 15, 16 and the vertical member joining the same constituting a frame generally of U- shape. The said frame is engaged with the disks 11, 13 by pivots 17 received in registering holes 1.11 and 113 in the disks 11 and 13.
Extending from the top and bottom frame bars 15, 16 are horizontal arms 18. Said arms 18 are pivoted to terminals 19 on the bars 15, 16, respectively and directed respectively downwardly and upwardly.
The arms 18 serve to support frames 20, each of said frames being supported by a pair of the arms 18 so as to lie in a vertical plane. Each frame 20 receivies a panel 21 adapted to bear printed or written index matter. The frames 20 are essentially U- sha'pe consisting of a top and bottom member and an outer vertical memben- The in longitudinal sliding movement of the frames 20 with their panels 21 relatively to the arms 18, to dispose a panel and its frame in an outer position for increased visibility as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 1.
Thus, with the described construction, each frame and the arms 18 and index panel 21 may be turned about the members 19 as a center. Also, the arms 15 carrying the arms 18, frame 20'and panel 21 may be swung with the pivots 17, as a center. 1n addition the panel 21 with its frame 20 may slide longitudinally on the bars 18 and the panel sired.
I would state, furthermore, that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein i1 lustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerablygvaried without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. An index including a structure mounted to turn abouta vertical axis, a series of frames mounted on said structure to turn therewith, a series of index panels, and means supporting said index panels and connected with said frame to have sliding movement inward or outward in the general plane of the panel.
2. Anindex including a supporting structure, a series of panels disposed about the axis of said structure,,and means supporting said panels from said structure and permitting turning movement of the panels about vertical axes intermediate their ends, and sliding movement of the panels in their own lanes toward or from the vertical axis of sand structure.
3. An index including a vertically disposed structure, frames disposed in vertical planes about said structure, index panels,
21 may be removed and replaced when de-' and frames for said index panels, said lastmentioned frames being rotatably and slidably supported on the first-mentioned frames.
d. An index including a vertically disposed structure, frames disposed in vertical planes about said structure, index panels, and frames for said index panels, said panel frames being mounted-in the fi-rst frames to slide in the plane thereof and to turn about 10 their own vertical axes.
5. An Jude including-a structure 1 mount- --ed to revolve about a vertical axis, frames "HlOI'lililQGl f'Or swing-laterally on said struc- AIjEXANDER BOUCHER,
