FOLDING CHAIR Filed Feb. 6, 1925 INVENTOR I WM/ ATTORNEY thereof extends around the adjacent prop 9,
Patented June 8, 1926,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. BA STETTEB, OF FORT WAYNE, INDIANA.
FOLDING onarn.
Application filed February 6, 1925. Serial No. 7,424. i
This invention relates to improvements in folding chairs and the object thereof is to provide a chair of its class, the legs and seat of which when in position for use, will be rigidly sustained and firmly support the occupant, and the back of which will be held in such manner as to conform to the body of the occupant. Another object of the invention is to provide an attractive and serviceable folding chair so constructed as to admit of economicalmanufacture.
These objects are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which v Fi 1 is a side elevation of a chairembodylng the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a' front elevation projected from Fig. 1; v
The characters appearing in the description refer to parts shown in the drawings and designated thereon by corresponding characters.
The invention comprises a pair. of frame members 1, the respective lower portions of which constitute the fore legs .2 of the chair, and the upper portions forming corresponding side arms 3. The legs 2 are connected by a suitable brace member 4, and the arms are connected near their upper ends by a transverse rod 5. Also, said-frame members are connected together centrally by a transverse rod 6 upon which is pivotally mounted a seat 7, the rod 6 forming a fulcrum therefor. A pair 'of rear legs 8 are mounted pivotally upon the rod 6 ,which passes through the respective rear legs'near their upperends which ends are interposed between the Sides of the seatand the frame members correspondingly.
A pendant'pro' 9 is pivotally supported on each arm 3, tlie lower end of the prop having therein an elongated slot 10 throug which a transverse rod 11 connecting the legs 8 extends. A washer 12 is positioned on the rod 6 between each side of the seat 7 and the adjacent leg 8 so that the seat is spaced apart from the legs 8 for the accommodation of the props 9 when the chair is folded. The props are connected by a cross-bar 13 at a point above the level of the seat 7, and the rear end 14 of the seat extends rearwardly between the props and .bears upwardly against the cross-bar 13 when the seat is osition for use.
side of the seat near the rear end A shackle loop 15 in.
which passes loosely therethrough, so that when the front end of the seat is raised, its rear end swings downwardly and the shackles bear against the props .causing the props to swing inwardly.
A back member 16 s pivotally mounted on the transverse rod 5 betweenv the arms 3,
the rod 5 serving as a fulcrum bearing for the back. At each side of the back'member near the lower end thereof 'isa shackle loop 17 through which the corresponding prop by the shackle loops on the seat, and the folding legs 8 are likewise swung backwardly through the action of the props. Also, the back memberis tilted upon its fulcrum support by the props which act in conjunction with the shackle loops on the back member. \Vhen the gccupant assumes position on the seat the back member tilts upon its fulcrum support to an extent limited by the shackle loops thereon and conforms to. the angle of the body of the occupant accordingly. Also, because of the weight of the occupant on the seat, the rear end of the seat bears upwardly against the crossbar 13 on the props which lends rigidity to the side frame members and the folding legs through the medium of the props connected therewith.
What I claim is 1. In a folding chair, a pair of side frame members spaced apart; a transverse rod con-;
necting said members centrally; a. palr of folding legs on said rod respectively adjacent the inner faees of the corresponding frame members; a seat having pivotal support on said transverse rod between said legs; a pendant prop having pivotal connection with each of said frame members at a point thereon above theseat; a transverse ar connecting said page at points thereon above said seat; a shac e loop on each side of the seat adjacent the rear end thereof, each loop encompassing the adjacent prop;
aback member having pivotal support in connection with said side members so as to turn upon a horizontal axis above said props; and a shackle loop on each side of the back member adjacent the lower end thereof encompassing respectively theadjacent prop, said loops havingl-imited movementon said props. l.
2. In a chair including a pair of side frame members and folding rear legs pivoted in connection therewith, a pair of prop members having pivotal connection at their tops respectively with the corresponding frame members at points thereon above said legs,
said prop members having connections respectively with said legs in the lower portions thereof and having limited sliding movement relative thereto; a seat fnlcrumed between the frame members and having limited sliding movement relative to said props; and a back member having fuland having sliding engagement adjacent its v lower end with said rops.
3. In a folding chair having a folding seat and legs 7 in supported relation with side frame members, a pair of props pivoted in connection with said frame members and having sliding connections respectively with said folding legs and limited movement relative thereto, said seat having sliding connections adjacent its rear end 'with said props andlimited movement relative thereto; and a back member having fulcrumed support between the side frame members at points thereon above the props, and having sliding connections adjacent its lower end with said prop members and limited movement relative thereto.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM C. RASTETTER.
