BOOKDELIVERY MECHANISM.
Application filed` January 2, 1926. Serial N'o. ,78,928.,
This invention relates to book-stitching machines, and more particularly to the delivery' mechanism for receiving fvititched or completed books. Y
l'n my prior United States Patent No. 1,423,6ei7, of July 25, 1922, I have shown a delivery meehanisn'i for signature-stitching machines which includes a plurality of endf less belts. VIn practice it has been found that belt-type delivery mechanism necessitates considerable care and quite frequent replacement', of the belts, due to wear, and The object of this invention is to provide a delivery n'iechanism in which theV belts are eliminated and the books are moved along by :i racl'having a eon'iposite motion to produce the forward feed of the books. p
The invention further consists inthe several features hereinafter set forth and more.particularly defined. by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevation view of delivery n'iechanism-embodying the invention, parts being broken away and parts being shown in section along the line- 1-1 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation view of the delivery mechanism;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of said mechanism, parts being broken away and parts being shown in section.
It will be understood that the delivery mechanism embodying the invention may be used in connection with any book-stitching machine, and the delivery end of one such machine is shown in my prior United States Fatent No. 1,423,647, above mentioned, wherein mechanism including a fly is designed to remove the stitched signatures from the machine and deposit them on the delivery mechanism, preferably arranged at the front side of the machine.
The delivery mechanism forming the subject of this invention embodies a relatively fixed table or book-support and a movable table cooperating therewith.
The fixed table includes end frames 4 and spaced slats or bars 5 upon which the books are deposited.
The movable table includes a frame and spaced slats or bars 6 carried by this frame and movable within the spaces formed be tween the slats 5. The frame carrying the bars 6 includes transverse frame members 7 the I and ylongitudinally extending side frames 8 to which brackets 9 are secured adjacent each end. rlphe brackets 9 at one end of this fran'ie have vertically disposed slots 1 0 through which a shaft 11 passes Aand the brackets at the other end of this frame have similar slots through which a shaft 12 passes. Each ofthe shafts 11 and 12 are journalled in guide bars 13 slidably mountedin guideways 14 in the end frames 4L. The bars 13 are connected .by a transverse bar or. bars i3. .i i The shafts 11 and 12are drivingly coh-v nected by a sprocket 15 on each shaft anda chain 16. The shaft12 carries a sprocketwheel 17 connected by a chain 418 to va sprocket 19 on a drive shaft 20.Y Since the bars 1 3` associated with the shaft 12 have to reciprocate, the chain 1 8 is provided with slack to accommodatethis movement and a tensioning deviceftakes up this slack, Asaid device., comprising an idler sprocket V21 mounted on a'swinging arm .22 hinged at 23 to the .fixed frame 4 and held by a spring 25 in engagement with the chain 18.
F or reciprocating the bars 13, and hence the bars 6, a cam 26 on the shaft 12 engages a roller 27 on a shaft 28.0arried by a bracket 29 on the Xed frame 4, the cam being held against said roller by springs 30 connected to loose collars 31 on the shaft 12 at one end and to the frame 4 .at their other ends so that as the shaft 12 is rotated the cam 26 cooperates with said roller to produce the desired movement.
For moving the bars 6 up and down, there are cams 32 on the projecting ends of the rotating shafts 11 and 12 which engage rollers 33 'on stud shafts 34 on the side frames 8. Y
The cam 26 and the cams 32 areso de- A signed that the bars 6 yare first moved upwardly from a position slightly below the level of the bars 5, as shown in full lines, to .a position slightly above, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, so that the books are raised off the bars 5. While in raised position the cam 26 acts to move the bars 6 through the associated frame members, including the bars 13, forward to carry the raised'books away from the main machine and thereafter the cams 32 permit the bars 6 to be lowered to their full line position to deposit the books on the fixed table and then the cam 26 form or arrangement-of -parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the appended claims.
'What I claim as myl invention is 1. In a book-delivery mechanism, the combination of a'iixed'table having spaced booksupports, a movable table having spaced book-supports working in the spaces between the book-supports'of saidfixed table, means for elevating, and'depressing said movable tablerelativeto said fixed table, and separate Ymeans for moving said 4movable' table forwardlyl while elevatedlto advance the books along said fixed table.
2. In` abook-delivery1nechanism,the combination 'of -a fixed vtable having spaced book-supports,l a movable table having spaced book-supports'working in they spaces between the book-supports 'ofthe xed table and movable above the same, saidmovable table including "a frame carrying its `book-supports and siidable 4guide-bars, meansk for moving saidframe vertically with respect to sai'd-guifde-bars, and means for reciprocating 'said 'guide-'bars while the'frame 1s elevated to advance the books along said fixed table.
3. In a book-delivery mechanism, the combination of a fixed table having spaced booksupports, a movable table having spaced book-supports workingin the spaces between the book-supports of the fixed table and lmovable above the same, said movable table including a frame carrying its book-supports and slidable guide bars, rotating shafts journalled n said guide bars and provided with cams for moving said frame vertically, and means `for reciprocating said guide bars while the frame .is elevated to advance the booksalong said fixed table.
4. In a book-delivery mechanism, the combination of a fixed table having spaced booksupports,' a movable table having spaced book-supports lworking in the spaces between the book supports `of the fixed table and movable above the saine, said movable table including a frame carrying its booksupports and slidabie guide bars, rotating shafts journalled in said guide bars .and provided with cams for movin@r said frame vertically, and means inclu ing a cam mounted on one of' said shafts for reciprocating said guide bars while the frame is elevated to advance the books along said fixed table.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
MARTIN CHRISTENSEN.
