mrnoennrio nonnen, i ,A ,t y i timpliceren rues sepiemterzs 19225. seins icojseieeef This invention relates to lithographie rollers.
As` is' well known, e lithographie roller must present n smooth and true outer surfece to properly perform the function out distributing inlu ll'or the moet part such rollers heretofore here been made by mountlng felt and leather layers over roller stock. The leather at best varies in thickness and while some ot the irregularities of the leather are teken up by the -felt leyer, the uniformity of the operative surface of the leather layer can he improved.
One object is to provide, as an article of manufacture, a simple lithographie roller having e smooth und true outer surface by means of which improved results can be eccolnplishod.
Another object of this invention is to provide a simple and improved method of making lithographie rollersfn a `infirmer to present a smooth, true and uniform operating; surface.
Another ob'ect is to provide n .inethod for makin :g lithographie rollers adapted to meet the requirements for successful commercial operation.
These :ind other objects nre accomplished hy Ineens of the method disclosed on the nccompenying sheet of drawings,v in which 'Figure 1 is s vertical longitudinal sectionnl'view through n mold and disclosing my method;
Figure 2 is en elevntionsl View of the completed roller; and
Figure 3 is et sectional view teken in the plane oi line 3-3 et Figure 1.
The ,various novel features ot my invention Will be apparent from the following description and. drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the figures of the drawings, it will he noted that l have provided e mold in the orm oit e cylindrical casing 10 preferably made et steel. A leyer of leather 11 is inserted Within the mold and is to forni the outer leyer of Athe completed lithogrephic roller. This cylinder et leather 11, Whrfgah is sewcd longitudinally thereof., is 'forced outwardly against the inner smooth sur iece of the mold 1Q so that the leather cyl. inder will present e smooth and 'true operating surface. Preferably the leath inder 11 is forced outwardly into ment with the mold by compres which may be supplied through e. which extends through one heed v closes one end of the mold. The otl 14 closes the other end of the ine provided with a pipe 15 through composition, to be referred to inter,- is under pressure into the mold.
After the leather cylinder 11 is set place within the mold 10 the roller 16 is placed within the mold and center, with respect thereto by having its ends or trunnions 17 and 18 passed through tures in the end heads 13 and 1e. wid be noted that the end heads 18 end clamp the ends of the leether cylind against the cylindrical mold 10. After t A leather cylinder 11 is pressed outwardly" into engagement with the interior surface of the steel mold 10 by compressed air or op any other suitable medium, any suitable composition is forced through the pipe 'lo into the' mold under e pressure sufficient to overcome the pressure of the air passino; through the pipe 12. Preferably the mold is set on its left-hand end during the that the composition is forced into th Villen the entire space between the roll stock 16 and the leather cylinder 11 und l tween the end heads 13 and 141 is complaint filled with composition, the composition i permitted to solidify. After it hes fied the end heads 13 and 14 and, the i. 10 may be removed whereu ion the. eule p head portion, as indicate 1). rn trimmed and the ends of the leather cyiinu der drawn in as shown at Z0 for completing the lithographie` roller.
By thus making' the lithogrephic roller, a smooth, true and even operative surfe/sf; is provided and any irregularities surdi. as in. the variable thickness of the leather., not appear or affect the operativo surte of the roller, for such irregularities will connpenseted for by the composition materiel It is my intention to cover all modifications of t. e invention falling within the Spirit and scope of the following' claims.
I 1. As an article of manufacture, a lithographie rollerl including a layer of leather o variable l and composition backeondition. ,A l
2. As an article of nmnufactnre. a litho graphic roller includingr roller stock, a layer 1I of leather of variable thickness having an operating Surface, n composition interposed betweenA said roller stock and layer of leather and shaped with respect to the lntt er and compensating for 1e variable thickness 20 thereof so-that the operating surface of said leather which ot el'wise would he relatively uneven a smooth and trne condition. v
i igned at Chicago, Illinois, this 22ml ol September, 1922.
