Description

June 1 1926.
s. MCQLATCHIE ATTACHMENT PLUG F' iled August 9, 1920 li etenized dune 1, 19226.
UNITED STATES [PAM e PATENT OFFICE.
STANLEY MCCLATCHIE, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO BENJAMIN ELECTRIC MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
. ATTACHMENT PLUG:-
application filed Aug'ust 9, 1920. Serial No. 402,221.
My invention relates particularly to separable plugs and involves improvements in the construction of the receptacle and the ca. The main object is to provide a construction which can be readily made and assembled at minimum cost and yet be durable.
Fig. 1 isa longitudinal sectional view of a plug and cap embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view of theunder side of the 'cap.
Fi 3 is a sectional view of the plug on the pane of the line 3-3-Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the plug.
i Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the side contact member. and associated parts; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the centering contact member and associated parts.
A receptacle base 1 may be formed of any suitable insulating material such as moulded composition and provided with longitudinal passages 2, each of which has a ledge 3. A shoulder 4: is provided at one side and an extension 5 at the end.
The contacts are preferably in the form of bowed springs. The contact 6 is connected with the center contact 7 and has a hook 8 at the opposite end adapted'to engage one of the ledges in the base. A lip 9 engages so over the edge of the extension 5. Preferably a boss 10 is provided for engaging in one of the recesses in the cap blade.
The other contact member has .a longitudinally extending portion 11 and a lateral extension 12. The member 11' terminates in a hook 13 engaging the other edge in the base. The contact portion 14 preferably has a boss 15. The extension 12 may be screw threaded and serve as the outer contact as indicated in Fig. 3 or an additional screw shell 16 may be secured thereto as indicated in Fig. 1. In this case the flange of the screw shell may suitably abutt against. the wall or shoulder 17 of the base.
The parts thus far described are so constructed that the contact 6 may be readily inserted into the passage 2 and the book 8 snapped or bent over the edge 3 using a hook or similar tool to spring the hooked ends if 60 necessary to cause them to engage over the edge 3. Similarly the member 11 may be inserted in the other passage and engaged with the other ledge. It will be seen that it is unnecessary to use any screws and unnecessary to solder any of the parts in assembling.
The cap member has an insulating body 18 with the conductor passage 19 and grooves 20 connecting with the passage 19, and each extending around the end through substantially 90 degrees. Each blade 21 has a foot- 22 with an extension 23 secured in a groove to the rivet 24, the foot affording a seat for a screw 25. The walls of the groove 20 and the outer surface of the blade 21 are *so disposed with relation to the head ofthescrews 25 that the end of the conductor may be bent around and held beneath the head of the screw-25 between the blade and the walls of the groove. An insulating post 26 is preferably provided at the edge of each blade so as to give a maximum strain relief. J
I claim: v
1. In an attachment lug, an insulating body having ,a longitudinal blade "passage with shouldersflat opposite ends thereof, and
a metallic member having a contact portion in said recess, a hook engaging one of said shoulders at the entrance end, and a screw shell portion engaging the other shoulder.
2. In an attachment plug, an insulating body having a longitudinal passage with shoulders at opposite ends thereof, and a metallic member having a spring contact por-- tion, a hook engaging one of said shoulders and a screw shell portion engaging the other shoulder.
3. An adapter portion of a separable attachment plug comprising an insulating base, a center contact member and a blade engaging contact member, said center contact member and blade engaging contact member, being. parts of an integral. metal stamping, said insulating base having a "blade receiving opening into which said blade engaging contact member extends, said stamping having'a hook portion for hooking onto said insulating base to hold said stamping in place, said blade engaging member being between said center contact member and saidhook portion.
. 4. An adapter portion of a separable attachment plug com rising a threaded side contact member and a blade engaging contact member, said contact members being al sheet metal formed as parts of an inte stamping, said threaded si e contact member being formed as a lateral extension from said blade engaging contact member and an insulating base having a blade receiving opening in which said blade engagingcontact is located said threaded contact being discontinuous circlm'iferentially.
5. An adapter portion of a separable attachment plug comprising a threaded side contact member and a blade engaging con tact member, said contact members being formed as parts of an integral sheet metal stamping, said threaded side contact member being formed as a lateral extension from said blade engaging contact member, and an insulating base having a blade receiving opening in which said blade engaging contact is located, said stamping having an integral hook portion for hooking onto said insulating base to hold said stamping in place on said base.
(5. An adapter portion of a separable attachment plug comprising a pair of threaded side contact members and a blade engaging contact member, said pair of side contact members and said blade engaging contact members being formed as parts of an integral sheet metal stamping, said threaded side contacts being formed as lateral extensions from opposite sides respectively of said blade engaging contact member and an insnlating base having a blade receiving opening in which said blade engaging contact is located said threaded contact being discontinuous circnmferentially.
