Application filed March 24, 1921, Serial No. 455,092. Renewed March 27, 1926.
This invention relates tohangers or securing means for conductor pipe such as the ordinary conductor pipe used for drainage from the roofs of buildings and like uses. The principal object of the invention is to provide a hanger of the kind stated of the usual pivoted two-part construction, but with improved means for securing the outer or free end of the hinged or pivoted member to the body and shank portion of the hanger. This outer hinged portion has usually heretofore been secured by wiring the projecting extremity thereof to a similar projection on the inner or body portion of the hanger, thus incurring the liability of an insecure fastening by a careless worker and making the use of a wire manipulating tool necessary for the fastening and unfastening of the hanger. In accordance with my invention I provide means whereby a simple securing element, shown as an ordinary cotter pin is adapted to engage the projecting extremities of the two hanger portions, in a manner so that these may be instantly and securely fastened together without the use of any special tool, and without requiring any manipulation whatever, other than merely bending out the prongs of the cotter pin. The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description, and the distinctive features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing a hanger embodying my invention in use for holding a conductor pipe, a portion of such pipe being shown;
Fig. 2 is a side or edge view of the hanger removed, and with the parts in readiness for receiving a conductor pipe; and I Fig. 3 is a plan view of the hanger, the conductor pipe being shown in transverse section.
10 indicates the inner or body portion of the hanger having a usual penetrating shank or prong 11, projecting therefrom and adapted to be driven into the wood or other material of the building. This inner por tion is equipped at one side thereof with a pivot or hinge 12, for hinging the outer swinging portion 13 of the hanger thereto. The inner hanger portion 10 has a projection 14- as usual at its extremity opposite the pivot 12, and the swinging portion 13 has a similar projection 15 atits outer end, these two projections being in proximity to each other when the hanger is closed to embrace a conductor pipe C. In accordance with my invention the projection 15 has a small hole 16, formed transversely therethrough in a direction to receive the prongs 17 of a cotter pin, the eye 17 of which is fitted over the projection 14. This hole 16 is preferably of a dimension so that the prongs 17 before being spread apart, may be easily pressed therethrough, but retained by friction therein. In use the head or eye 17 a of the cotter pin is fitted over the projection 14:, the prongs 17 being for this purpose drawn well outward through the hole 16, and the cotter pin yielding suiiiciently for this purpose in the assumed case where the cotter pin has been previously assembled temporarily in the hole 16; it will be understood however, that so far as the invention is concerned the cotter pins may be applied separately and first fitted over the projection lt, with their prongs then pressed through the holes 16. Thereupon on pressing the projections 14, 15 together and spreading the prongs of the cotter pin as indicated at 17, the outer hanger portion 13 is held securely locked to the inner portion and in position to hold the conductor pipe securely in place. While I have herein described my improved hanger as adapted and intended for use with a conductor pipe or building construction, it will be understood that in a broader aspect this reference and use is merely illustrative and that I contemplate the application and use i of my improvements in any way or place Where such a hanger might be found desirable. I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claim rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A hanger of the kind described, comprising an inner body portion equipped with means for securing the same to a fixed support, an outer portion hinged thereto, said inner and outer portions having mating projections adapted to be brought into proximity side by side and so as to embrace a pipe, the projection on said inner portion having a socket tor holding the head of a cotter pin, and the projection on said outer portion having an opening receiving the prongs of the cotter pin, the extremities of said prongs being spread apart to engage said projection and hold said portions assembled.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my 11211116 to this specification.
JOHN E. BUGKLEY.
