WELL-CAPPING DEVICE AND CONTROL HEAD.
Application filed February This invention relates to a new'and improved combination of elements adapted for capping a well, and for controlllng the flow of gas, oil, water, or any liquid element therev of the oring 1mplements.-
from.
The objects of this invention are to produce a device of this kind which combines in one strong and compact control head, all the qualities necessary to meet the requirements of modern well drilling, to permit all drilling operations without interference, to control any flow instantly, and to provide for safety from fire.
Another object is to provide a control head which may be applied to the well casing prior to the flow therefrom, to provide a control head which has several outlets, so that, should any outlet become stopped by or bothered with sand, the remaining ones may be utilized for distribution while the stopped outlet is cleared for further" use, and to provide means for operating a main cutoif valve at a distance from the well.
Another object is to providea control head having two sets of outlets, one set being superposed above the other, and a main cutoil valve interposed between the sets of outlets.
Another object is to provide a control head having a much larger relative area than the well casing, so that various boring implements may be employed without interference by the control and capping elements.
Another object is to provide a.control head valve wheel 24, and having at the opposite 00 including a main cut-01f valve provided with end ports having external threads, whereby when the well boring implements are in use, the threads of the valve may be. protected by an external sleeve, leaving a full and clear openin through the valve for the operation With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as'the description 'proceeds, thefinvention resides in the combination of parts and in details ofconstructio'n hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the inventionherin disclosed may be madewithout departing from the spirit of the inventlon, 1
In the drawings; F igure 1 is a sectional v elevation of myimproved device; the de- 18, 1924. Serial No. 893,600.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the means for operating the main valve member.
Referring to the drawings, the lowermost body portion 11, consists of a nipple end 12, threaded to receive a pipe coupling 13,
- whereby the device is secured to a well casing 14. The body portion 11, isnpwardly flaring and terminates in a threaded portion 15. grees, the body portion 11 is provided with openings 16, each interiorly threaded to receive a pipe section 17. While these delivery ports 16 are shown as having interior pipe threads, they may be constructed with exterior pipe threads adapted to reeeive a coupling.
Referring to the top plan view shown in Fig. 4, it may be seen that each delivery pipe section 17, is provided with a control valve 18, adjacent to the body portion 11. Between each inner control valve 18 and corre- At intervals of substantially 120 de-' sponding outer control valve 19, there is interposed a full length of'pipe 20. Thus two,
end a' hand wheel 28. -With this arrangement the valve may be opened and closed at'a certain distance from the well casing.
I further provide a detachable air chamber 29, including a casing 30, provided with a series ofoutlet openings 31, provided with plugs 32. At the top, the casing 30 is provided with a pressure gauge 33 and an air cock 34. This arrangement-provides additional means for control and distributionv for the flow from the well.
In the use of this device, the body portion 11 is secured to the well casing at any desired stage inthe boring of the well and prior to the starting of the flow from the well. The main-valve is secured to body portion 11, and the delivery valves 18 and 19, with their correspondingpipe sections are placed in position. The extension means for operating the main-valve is mounted in position. Then with the main valve in openposition, the boring of the well may be car- Ill) ried on until a flow therefrom is obtained.
- When the boring is finished, the fnain valve may be closed, and the casing 30 secured in position. The well is then capped and.the
flow therefrom is under control.
In case of clogging or-interference with any of the "lowermost delivery ports, or all of them, the main valve may be closed and a new set of delivery pipes'and control valves placed in connection with casing 30.
It may be seen that the main valve may, if necessary, be operated at .a distance from the well casing. When in position for use, the uppermost end of the valve is protected by a sleeve (not shown). With the protecting means for the threads located upon the exterior, the same is not disturbed by the operation ofthe drilling, and boring tools.
The gauge at the top of the air chamber serves to indicate the pressure within the well. Another advantage of the air chamber resides in the even flow from the several delivery pipes, and the cushioning of the pressure upon closing any of the delivery valves.
-What is-claimed is: I
1. The combination with a casing head ineluding upper and lower portions, of a valve .removably secured to said upper and lower portlons, means for operating sa1d valve, a
plurality of independent outlets in said lower portion, means for closing each outlet, a plurality of outlets in said upper portion, means for closing said upper outlets, said upper portion including an air chamber, said upper outlets being arranged below the top of the air chamber.
2. In a well capping device,Ta body portion adapted to be secured to a well casing, said body flaring upwardly and terminating in a threaded enlarged portion, a valve attached to said threaded portion, said valve having an opening corresponding to the area ofthe enlarged portion, means for actuating the valve, a series of delivery outlets integral with, the body portion, valve means for con- I trolling the delivery outlets, and a detachable upper body portion secured to the valve, said upper body portion comprising an air chamber above sa1d outlets. V
3. In a control head, a body portionincluding a collar for attachment to a well means thereon for attachment to a well cas-.
ing, a plurality oflower outlets in said body,
valves for closing said outlets, a plurality of upper outlets in said body and means for closing said upper outlets, said body having an inner area greater than the area of the casing to which it is attached, said body having a valve thereon for closing communication between the casing and the upper outlets, said body having a compression chamber therein.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
ALBERT ORVALL HESSEMER.
