It is known in the cultivator art that when the beams carryingthe cultivating elements are raised from or lowered into op crative relation with the soil the center of gravity of the implement is changed, thereby necessitating the provision of means change in ordmthat the proper balance of the implement may be preserved in all positions of the beams and tillage elements relatively to the ground. 7
One of the important purposes of this invention is to provide HIGZIHSfOl balancing the parts when the tillage elements are in either raised or lowered position without necessitating for this purpose the utilization of carrying wheels movable forward and rearward relatively to the frame, thereby avoiding the necessity of the provision of a more or less complicated construction for effecting such movement of the wheels and permitting the use of a frame COIlStILICtlOll of more rigid character.
It is also known in this art that the manual force required in the raising of the til lage elements and their supports should be reduced as much as possible and it is an other purpose of this invention to provide a novel combination and correlation of elements whereby the drivers seat is movable to utilize the weight of the driver in the lifting of the tillage elements and their supports out of ground working position.
Simplicity of construction is always desirable and, accordingly in-y'invention has for a further object the provision "of means by which both of the foregoing purposes may be carried into effect by a very simple and practical construction, and accordingly my invention further consists severally in novel combinations and correlations of elements whereby: (1) The seat support is pivotally mounted to have simultaneous for ward and downward movements while the tillage elements and their supports are being raised, obtainable from the operation of a single actuating element suitably connected to the frame and to the seat support and to the supports for the tillage elei'nentsz and (2) the said actuating element is also operableto adjust the tillage'elements and their supports and may be locked to hold them in various adjusted tillage elements.

The main frame may be of any suitable construction an'dis mounted upon suitable carrying wheels C, D. As here exemplified the frame comprises two longitudinal bars 10 and 11 suitably spaced apart and converging at their forward ends to receive be- *tween them and to support a tongue 12 to the sides of which they are secured by the through bolts 13. These bars are shown as supported at their rear endsby a cross member 14 having downwardly extending ends forming vertical members 15. The bars 10 and 11 are also cQnnected'neai' their forward ends by a cross member 16of suitable constructionand which is suitably secured thereto. Inclined braces 17 eiitend rearwardly from the cross member 16 to the lower ends of members and are rigidly securedto and brace these parts of the frame against relative movement. 'The illustrated connection of the frame and tongue is such that these are rigid and eta- 'tionary with relation one to the othen In the construction illustrated by the drawings the connection between the lower ends of the brace members 17 and the vertical members 15 is effected by brackets 18 mounted on the members 15 and suitably secured to the members 17. Spindles 19 are arranged at the junction of the members 15 and 17 and are suitably supported and upon these spindles the wheels C and D are journaled.
The letter E designates a drivers seat which is mounted upon a suitable support F having movement bodily in a forward and downward direction simultaneously with pivotal movement of the supports A, B, of the tillage elements in an upward direction, and, conversely, in a rearward and upward direction simultaneously with downward movement of said supports A, B. The described movements of the seat sup-port F and supports A are, of course, relatively to the main frame, supporting wheels and tongue, in the illustrated embodiment of the invention.
The seat support constitutes a lever which extends longitudinally of the frame. It is preferably formed by a pair of spaced bars and its preferred location is below the plane of the main frame and with its forward end in advance of the vertical plane of the axle spindles 19 and its rearward end, upon which the seat is mounted, rearward of said plane. It is here shown as composed of a pair of spaced bars 20, 20 each having a pair of upwardly extending elements 21 and 22 which substantially form upward projections from the seat supporting lever, to the side bars of which they are rigidly secured in any suitable manner. The projections 21, 21 are connected by links 23, 23 to fixed brackets 24, 24, which brackets depend from the frame members 10, 11, respectively. The upper ends of the projections 22, 22 are pivoted at 25 to toothed quadrants 26, 26, which are pivotally mounted on the frame member 14 and are connected to each other to move simultaneously, being here shown as secured to opposite ends of a sleeve 27 rotatably mounted on the member 1 1'. Hand levers 28, 29 having ordinary spring latches 30, 30 connected by links 3 30 to suitably arranged latch- operating handles 31, 31 are mounted in such relation to the quadrants 26, 26 respectively, that they may be locked to said quadrants and either one'the lever 28 in this instanceoperated to turnthe quadrants pivotally, or may be released from their locking engagement to the quadrant so as to be operable relatively to the quadrant. As here shown, these hand levers are pivoted at 32, 32 to the quadrants. They are provided with projections 33, 33 connected by links 34:, 34
to the supports A and B carrying the tillage elements A, B. Another quadrant 35,
having teeth at its opposite ends is fixedly secured to the frame-member 1 1, and a dog 36 to engage the teeth of said quadrant is pivoted at 25, to the adjacent quadrunt26. This dog is controlled by a handle 37, which is connected thereto by a link 38 and is suitably pivoted to the hand lever 28, adjacent t a handle 39 projecting laterally from the lever 28.
It will be seen that when it is desired to adjust the supports A, B and tillage elements A, B to regulate the depth of penetration of the tillage elements into the soil, the hand levers 28 and 29 are grasped adjacent the handles 31 and the latter are operated to release the hand levers from their locking engagement with the quadrants 26. The hand levers-are then moved on their pivots 32 relatively to the quadrants 26 and (the links 38 and the pivotal connection of the handles 37 to the hand levers permitting this movement notwithstanding the dog 36 is at this time engaged with the adjacent quadrant 35) thereby raising or lowering the supports A, B, according to the direction of pivotal movement given the lovers 28 and 29. \Vhen the desired adjustment has been accomplished the levers 28 and 29 are locked to their respective quadrants by releasing the handles 31, the springs (not shown) in the latches 3O operating to engage the latter with adjacent teeth of the quadrants, respectively, and thereby holding the parts in the positions to which they have been set.
hen it is desired to raise or lower the tillage elements and their supports from or into working relation with the soil, the handles 39 and 3?, carried by the hand lever 28, are grasped and the handle 37 is operated to release the dog 36 from the quadrant 35. Force now applied to the hand lever will operate through the connected quadrants 26, the projections 21 and 22 and the links 23 to move the seat support bodily, in a downward and forward direction or in an upward and rearward direction, as the case may be, and will also operate through the projections 33 and links 34 to move the supports upward simultaneously with downward and forward movement imparted to the seat sup port, or downward simultaneously with upward and rearward movement imparted to the seat support.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a most practicable means for carrying into effect all of the before mentioned several purposes of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what I believe to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tillage implement comprising a frame, a member to support a tillage element, means to connect said member pivotally to the frame to permit the member to weasel be raised and lowered, an 'endwise movable seat supporting lever having connection with said member, a seat mounted on said lever, and a pivotal connection between the seat supporting lever and the frame, 0perat-ive to permit said lever to move bodily in aforward and downward direction simultaneously with upward movement of the tillage element supporting member and to move bodily in a rearward and upward direction simultaneously with downward movement of said member.
2. A tillage implement comprising a frame, a member to support 'a tillage element, means to connect said member pivotally to the frame to permit the member to be raised and lowered, a seat supporting lever arranged longitudinally with relation to the frame and having connection with said member, a seat mounted on the rear portion of said-lever, and means pivotally connecting the forward portion of the lever to the frame to permit said lever to move forward and downward simultaneously with upward movement of the til age element supporting member and to move rearward and upward simultaneously with downward movement of said members.

6.- A tillage implement comprising a frame, supporting wheels therefor, a memb er to support a tillage element and having pivotal connection with the frame to permit the member to be raised and lowered, a seat supporting lever having connection with said member and arranged longitudinally with relation to the frame, and with its forward portion in advance of the axis of the supporting wheels and its rearward portion rearward of said axis, the said forward portion having a floating'pivot connection with the frame, whereby the lever will have movement bodily and in a forward and downward direction or rearward and upward directions frame, a member to support a tillage element, means toconnect said member pivotally to the frame to permit the member to be raised and lowered, a seat supporting lever, a seat mounted on said lever, connections be tween the seat supporting lever and the frame, operative to permit said lever to move :forward and downward from its upper position and upward and rearward from its 'lowerposition andincluding an operating member having connection with the tillage element supporting member and a movable force transmitting member between the operating member and the seat supporting lever, said operating member and force "transmitting member being relatively movable to adjust the tillage element supporting "member and having means to secure them to each other in selected positions of relative adjustment.
'8. A tillage implement comprising a 3 frame, a member to support a tillage element, means to connect said member pivotally to the frame, a seat supporting lever, a seat mounted on said lever, connections between the seat supporting lever and the frame, operative to permit said lever to move forward and downward from its upper position and upward and rearward from its lower position and including a quadrant pivotally connected to the frame and an operating lever having connection with the tillage element supporting member, said lever being movable relatively to the quadrant to adjust the tillage element supporting member for depth of penetration of the tillage element into the soil and said lever and quadrant beingmovable unitarily to move the tillage element supporting member to and from working position, means to secure the lever releasably in its adjusted position to the quadrant and means to secure the lever and quadrant releasably to the frame.

In a tillage implement, a wheel supported main frame, tillage elements, pivotally mounted supports for the tillage elements, a drivers seat, a seat supporting lever mounted to be movable bodily forward and downward relatively tothe frame and an actuating element having connection with the supports for the tillage elements and with the seat supporting lever and operable to move said lever bodily forward and downward and to raise the supports for the tillage elements, simultaneously.

In a tillage implement, a main frame, a drivers seat, a bodily movable seat support; and means connecting the seat support to the frame comprising a link at one end of the seat support, a pivoted device carried by the frame and a pivotal connection between said device and the seat support intermediate the length of the latter; and means including said pivoted device and link to cause the seat support and seat to move bodily and about an arc struck from the point of connection of the link with the main frame.

In a tillage implement, a main frame, a drivers seat, a seat support; means connecting the seat support to the frame comprising a link at one end of the seat support, a pivoted device carried by the frame and a pivotal connection between said device and the seat support inte mediate the length of the latter; and an actuating element operable upon said pivoted device to move the seat support bodily and in an arcuate path.

In a tillage implement, a main frame, a drivers seat; a bodily movable seat sup port, a link connecting one end of the seat support to the frame, a pivoted device carried by the frame, a pivotal connection between said device and the seat support intermediate the length of the latter; a member to support a tillage element, having pivotal connection with the frame, an actuating element having connection with said member to raise and lower the same and operable upon the pivoted device to move the seat support, said actuating element having movement relatively to saiddevice, and holding means, to lock the actuating element in selected positions to the pivoted device and to lock the device and actuating element to the frame at the extremes of their unitary movement.

In a tillage llUPlGlDGDt, a main frame, a drivers seat, a seat support, a link connecting one end of the seat support to the frame, a quadrant pivotally connected to the frame and having pivotal connection with the seat support intermediate the length of the latter, an actuating lever having means for securing it in selected positions to the quadrant and for releasing it from said quadrant, and means to support tillage elements, having connection with the lever.

In a tillage implement, a main frame, a drivers seat, a support for the drivers seat, swinging means connecting the forward portion of the seat support with the frame, means pivotally connected to the main frame and supporting tillage elements, a pivoted device having connection with the seat support intermediate the length of the latter, an actuating member movable relatively to said device and having connection with the means which support the tillage elements; and means to adjustably secure the actuating member to said device and to transmit move ment from said member to said device.

In a tillage implement, a main frame, a drivers seat, a support for the drivers seat a portion of the forward end of which is below the plane of the main frame and extends thence at the forward end of the support toward the plane of said frame; swinging means connecting the forward end of the seat support with the main frame; and means operable to move said seat support bodily and about an arc struck from the point of connection of the swinging means with the main frame.
16. In a tillage implement, a main frame; a drivers seat; a support for the drivers seat a portion of the forward end of which is below the plane of the main frame, said support having spaced projections extending upward from its said portion at different places in the length thereof; swinging means connecting the projections with the main frame; and an actuating element having connection with one of said swinging means and operative to cause the forward end of the seat support to move in an arcuate path struck from the point of connection of the other swinging means with the main frame.
17. In a tillage implement, a main frame; a drivers seat; a support for the drivers seat a portion of the forward end of which is below the plane of the main frame, said support having spaced projections extending upward from its said portion at different places in the length thereof; swinging means connecting the projections with the main frame; means to support tillage elements, pivotally connected to the main frame; aetuating means having connection with the latter supports; and means to connect the actuating means with one of the swinging means of the seat support and operable therethrough to swing the seat support in an arcuate path struck from the point of connection of the other swinging means with the main frame.

In a tillage'implement, a main frame, a seat supporting lever whose forward end has a floating connection with the frame, a pair of devices pivotally mounted on the frame and connected for unitary movement, means pivotally connecting the seat supporting lever with said devices, operating levers pivoted upon the frame and movable relatively to said devices, beams to support tilllevers to said devicesin selected positions,
respectively, releasable means to secure said devices'and the levers to the frame, and a seat mounted on the seat supportmg'lever.
19. In a tillage lmplement, a main frame, supporting wheels carrying said frame and held against movement relatively to the frame 1n a direction longitudinal of the latter, a seat supporting lever whose forward end has a floating connection with the frame, a pair of connected quadrants having a pivotal mounting on the frame, means pivotally connecting the seat supporting lever with said quadrants, operating levers mounted adjacent the respective quadrants and movable rela spectively, and a seat mounted on the seat supporting lever.
