Application filed November This invention relates to looms, and more particularly to. 1neans for locking the cloth roll in the cloth rollstands.
It is now the ordinary practice to provide looms with a cloth roll stand at each side thereof at the front of the loom, and mount the cloth ro-llon a rack bar which is raised by a train of mechanism to. move the cloth oll to its cloth windin position, and; in order that the cloth roll may be removed from the 100m when the desired length of cloth has been wound thereon as, it is woven, each of the cloth roll stands is provided with a roll removing opening which com-- municates with a guideway usually provided in each stand.
When the cloth as it is woven has been wound upon the clothroll, the journals of the cloth roll are usually in a position. adjacent the cloth roll removing openings in the stands, and at this time there is usually nothing to prevent the cloth roll from jumping out of the, loom, owing to loom vibration orfrom other cause, and accidents are liable to occur to the loom attendant, the loom parts and the cloth. v I
One of the objects of the present invention, therefore, is to provide a cloth roll look so constructed and arranged thatwhen the cloth has been wounda ponthe cloth roll and'the journals of the latter are ad-- jacent the cloth roll removing openings in the stands, the lock will prevent accidental. removal of the cloth roll and its load, until the loom attendant or other operative intentionally desires to remove the cloth roll and its load from the loom.
More specifically stated, the invention comprises a lock located in the cloth roll removing openings in the cloth roll stands and movable at will to an inoperative posi-. tion to permit the removal of the full cloth roll and the substitution of an empty one, the construction being such thatas the empty cloth roll is moved to its cloth winding position, usually against the sand roll, it will trip the lock for movement again to. its locking position. The loom frame and loom operating parts for weaving cloth may be of usual character, and in the present instance. the side members of the loom frame at the front thereof are connected by a girth or cross-bar 1 which mayalso. be of usual, construction, and at thev top the sides of he loom frame-are connected by a breast beam 2. The girth or crossnnember 1 at the lower part of the loom frame has mounted thereon the cloth roll stands, one at each side of the loom. As shown, these stands comprise arms or I iembers 3 of similar construction which are secured at their lower ends to the cross-girth 1 1 by bolts 4 or similar securing means, and
nothingnew in this arrangement of the cloth roll stands, and such stands may be secured in position in any appropriate manner.

particular means of rotating the sand roll sand roll, To effect movement of the cloth roll. to winding position againstthe sand roll a train of mechanism including a yielding member is employed, so that as the cloth roll increases in size and finally has wound thereon the desired length of cloth, the journals of the roll are located adjacen the cloth roll removing openir' in the cloth roll stands. In such mechan sins the cloth roll is usually moved to its winding position against the sand roll by a rack bar, and such form of mechanism is herein shown. T he cloth roll Stands each have a guideway 8 to receive the journals of the cloth roll 9 on which the cloth is to be wound. The guideways 8 may be variously contrived, either as channelways or slots in the cloth roll stands, the essentials being that the journals ot the cloth roll will be prevented from jumpingout of the guideways.
Mounted in the guideways in the cloth roll stands, or otherwise supported, are the rack bars 10 having seats 11 at their upper ends on which the ournals of the cloth roll rest. These rack bars extend downwardly and are engaged with the teeth of a gear 12 mounted on a. support 13 and having connected therewith a sprocket wheel 14 over which passes the sprocket chain 15. The sprocket chain 15 also passes over the sprocket wheel 16 loosely mounted on the shaft 17 which extends transversely of the loom and is supported in suitable bearings for turning movement. The loose sprocket 16 is connected to the shaft 17 by a spiral spring 18, that is, one end of the .spring 18 is connected at 19 to the sprocket 16 and at lar means tor receiving a hand implen'ient or crank handle, the construction being such that when it is desired to move an empty cloth roll upwardly into oriving relation with the sand roll, the loom attendant turns he worm and through the described con- 3 nection with the rack bars 10, the cloth roll is moved upwardly but is, nevertheless, capable ot downward movement through the yielding connection between the sprockets 16 and the shatt- 17, so that as the cloth is wound upon the cloth roll 9. the cloth roll 9 and its journals will push down the rack bars until finally the journals of the cloth roll will. be opposite the cloth roll removing openings in the cloth roll stands. int this time the cloth roll is liable to be thrown from the loom, with possible injury to the loom attencant and loom parts, it means were not provided to overcome this condition.
Each of the cloth roll stands has the cloth roll opening 26, which is herein shown as a part of the stand bent laterally outward in order to permit the journals of the cloth roll to pass freely to and from the guideways in the cloth roll stand. The enlarged openings 26 maybe variously contrived, but in the present instance they are formed by bending the cloth roll stands.
Mounted in each of the cloth roll removing openings 26 is a lock which, during the weaving operation, is normally in looking position, but. which may be removed from looking position at will by the machine attendant, to permit the removal of a full cloth beam and the insertion of an empty one. The locking device is so contrived that when moved manually into its unlocked position, it will retain that position until, as.
the empty clot-h roll is moved upwardly into cloth winding position, itwill be automatically tripped for movement to its locking position.
In the present instance, the lock comprises a plate or casting 27 having an elongated opening 28 through which passes a pin 29, so that the lock has both a pivotal and bodily movement on the supporting pin 29.
At its lower end the lock is provided with a locking toe 30 which is adapted to engage, when in looking position, with a locking shoulder 31 formed in the lowerwall of the opening 26.
Thus, when the parts are in position as indicated by full lines in Fig. 2, and the cloth roll journals have finally reached the roll removing openings 26, the cloth roll is lockedor prevented from jumping out of the roll removing openings, hen, however, the loom has been stopped and the loom attendant wishes to remove the cloth roll and its lead, the lock is manuallymoved to an unlocking position, and to this end the lock is provided with a finger lift 32 whereby the lock as a whole may be bodily raised on the pivotal support 29, and then turned into dotted line position, Fig. 2, where it is held by the edge portion 83 of the lock bearing against the surface 34: of the upper wall of the roll removing opening.
lVith the parts in the position as last described, that is, with the lock in its unlocked or inoperative position, as indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 2, the attendant can remove the eloth roll and its load and insert an empty roll. Vi hen the empty roll has been inserted, the attendant winds up the shaft 17 to move the empty roll into cloth. winding position, and during the upward movement ot the roll it strikes the tumbler portion 35 ot' the lock and automatically trips the lock from its inoperative position for movement to its operative position, that is, from the dotted line position, Fig. 2, to the full line position. constitute a good practical form of the present invention, but it is to be understood that the details may be varied within the true scope of the invention, which affords a lock, automatically moved to locking po sition by movement of the cloth roll to its winding position, to'thereatter prevent the removal of the cloth roll from the cloth roll stands until the loom attendant intentionally moves the lock to its inoperative or unlocked position. 1
VJhat is claimed is:
1. In a loom, the combination of a cloth roll stand having a guideway which receives thejournal of a cloth roll and aroll removing opening leading into the guidewaybetween the upper and lower ends thereof, a lock for closing the opening and manually movable to its unlocking position to permit the removal of one cloth roll and the insertion of another, and a tumbler connected to the lock for automatically tripping the lock by engagement with the cloth roll as the cloth roll is removed to cloth winding posifrom the guideway through said opening as tion.
2. In a loom, the combination of a cloth roll stand having a guideway for embracing the journal 01 a cloth roll and a roll removing and inserting opening leading to the guideway, a lock for closing said opening and movable to unlocking position, means for retaining the lock in unlocking position to permit the removal of a full cloth roll and the substitution of an empty cloth roll, and i means connected to the lock for tripping the lock that it may move to locking position as the empty cloth roll is moved to cloth winding position.
3. In a loom, the combination of a cloth ro l stand at each side of the loom provided with a guideway tor embracing the journals of a cloth roll and having a roll removing and inserting opening connnunicating with the guideway for the removal and insertion of cloth rolls, a lock for closin said open .ing and manually movable to an inoperative position for the removal and insertion of a cloth roll, means for holding the lock in such inoperative position, and means engaged by the cloth roll as it is moved to winding position to automatically trip the lock that it may move to its closing position.

6. In a loom, the con'ibination of a stand having an upwardly extending guideway in the rol is bodily moved in the guideway to a position opposite the opening and movable at will from locking position to permit the removal of the roll, and means actuated by the cloth roll as it is moved in the guideway towards cloth winding position to efiect automatic moven'ient of the lock back to locking position; i

In a loom, the combination of a cloth roll stand having a guideway for the journals of a c'oth roll and a roll removing and ins "ting opening communicating with the guideway, a loclrior closing said opening to prevent a roll tronrmoving through said opening when the roll is moved in the guideway to a position opposite said opening, and movable at will to unlocking position, and means for effecting movement of the lock to locking position when a cloth roll is moved in the guideway towards cloth wind I gagement by a cloth roll to automatically trip the latch for movement back to looking engagement with the shoulder as the cloth roll is moved to cloth winding position.
