Description

G. K. TIMSER ELECTRICAL SWITCH Filed July 14. 1923 KNVENTOR WITNESS: AITORNEY Patented May 11, 1926.
UNITED STATES? ascent PATENT orrice.
GUSTAF K. TIMSER, OF PORTEBFIELD, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO ANTONE HOMA, F FORTERFIELD, WISCONSIN.
ELECTRICAL SW'ITCI-I.
Application filed July 14, 1923.
This switches.
Objects of this invention are to provide an electric switch which may be used in a number of capacities, but which is primarily intended for use upon automobiles to control signal lights.
Further objects are to provide a simple type of switch which may be placed in an easily accessible position adjacent the driver and which has a main controlling arm so constructed and associated with the parts of the switch that it will control a plurality of lights depending upon its manipulation. An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the switch. Figure 2 is a longitudinal horizontal section therethrough.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view. Figure 4 is a sectional view at right angles to Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a diagram of the electric circuits,
This switch comprises a casing having a cover 36 formed with a T-slo-t including invention relates to electrical three-way branches 37 38 and 39. Vithin the casing is a contact 40 connected by a wire 41 with the socket carrying the bulb 30 32, and at an opposite point within the casing is a contact 42 connected by a wire 43 with the socket carrying the bulb 33. It
should be understood that all of the bulbs used are of the single contact type, as their r other terminals are grounded on the sockets. Within the casing toward one edge thereof is a contact 44 connected by a wire 45 with the socket carrying the bulb 31. The connection to the tail light bulb 30 is inclependent of this switch and may have any other desired switch for controlling energization in the usual manner. The switch further includes a control arm 46 having an operating handle or button 47 which projects above the plate 36, while the shank is movable along the branches 37 38 and 39 of the T-slot therein. Due to the peculiar construction of switch arm and the slots, ea h w t h m y be moved in any one of t e Serial No. 651,663.
three directions along the slots 37, 38 and 39.
This lever carries an enlargement or shoe 49 which is engageable with any one of the contacts 40, 42 or 44.
Within the casing I also provide a snap switch 50 with which is connected a wire 51 which leads to the socket carrying the bulb 29 and this snap switch is connected by a wire 52 with the source of current G of the car, which source of current has its other terminal grounded. The arm 46 is also connected with the source of current by a wire 53.
In the operation it will be seen that the energization of the tail light is independent of the other lights. When the operator desires to indicate an intention to stop he operates'the switch 50 whereupon current is fed to the lamp 29 which may be a stop lamp. \Vhe'n it is intended to signal an intention to proceed slowly the operator grasps the button 47 and moves the arm 46 rearwardly into the branch 39 of the slot, whereupon the enlargement or shoe 49 011 the switch lever will engage the contact 44 and close the circuit through the lamp 31, which may be a lamp indicating a slow speed. If it is intended to signal aturn to the left or the right as the case may be the operator moves the switch arm 46 into the branch 37 or 38 of the T-slot, as the case may be whereupon the enlargement 49 will engage either the contact 40 or the contact 49. and close the circuit through the bulb 32 or 33 depending upon the direction of the turn such bulbs indicating the direction of turn.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the in vention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
A controlling switch comprising a casing having a three-way slot therein, an operating arm having a shank mounted in the threeway slot and adapted to be selectively shifted into any of the slot branches, an-enlarged contact shoe carried by said arm and movable therewith within the casing, and three contact members positioned Within the casing, two of said contact members being arranged opposite each other and the third contact member being arranged laterally with respect to said first tWo contact members, said last mentioned Contact member having projecting portions at its sides adapted to be engaged by said shoe when said shoe engages either of said first mentioned pair of contacts.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GUSTAF K. TIMSER.
