Description

I o. A. K. PRlglTZ now Filed Sept. 1 1925 Patented May 4, 1926.
UNITED STATES OSCAR ADOLF xnrs'rmn PRINTZ, or OFVERUM, SWEDEN.
PLOW.
Application filed September 10, 1925. Serial No. 55,593.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'OSCAR AnoLr :KRIS" TIAN PRINTZ, a citizen of the Kingdom of Sweden, residing at Ofverum, Swedemhave invented new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows and more particularly to mold-boards for plows.
It is proposed to manufacture moldboards for plows of so called soft-center steel, that is, a steel comprising an intermediate layer of soft iron. and two outer layers of a steel of high carbon content, capable of being hardened and welder. to the said intermediate layer.
With reference to the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is'a section of part of such a mold-board of soft-center steel of the hitherto used design together with a portion of the plow standard to which the mold-board is secured by means of screws.
1 indicates the standard, made in the wellknown way of cast iron or steel that is not hardened. 2 is the outer hardened layer of the mold-board, and 3 is the soft intermediate layer thereof. The arrow indicates thedirection of movement of the plow. The point 4 of the section will thus he on the cutting edge of the mold-board when in operation. The limiting surfaces 5 and 6 0f the cutting portion are in the operation of the plow subjected to a considerable wear,
and as the layers of the mold-board are comparatively thin the edge of the moldboard will soon become blunt and, after having been used for a rather short period of time, the section of the edge will be somewhat like that shown in Fig. 2 and, as a result, the tractive power required for driving the plow must be substantially in creased.
The present invention has for its obgect to overcome said inconvenience by stiffening the edge of the mold-board so as to obtain a greater depth as seen in the rearward direction while maintaining the alternate layers of hardened and non-hardened material of the mold-board also within the reinforced portions, atrthe same time increasing the thickness of'the various layers. According to this invention this result is obtained by forming the foremost cutting portion of the outer layer of: the -mold-board blank. with a stiffening ridge on its rear surface, said ridge'being formed by bending and upsetting the foremost edge of the mohjl-board blank,
The invention is illustrated byway of example in Figp3 of the drawing. With reference to Fig. 3, the numeral 7 indicates the plow standard, 8 are the two outer hardened layers, and 9 is the soft intermediatelayer. The stiffening ridge at the foremost edge of the mold-board is formed by bending the foremost portion of the mold-board blank through an angle of about 45 and upsetting said bent portion by a pressure directed towards the edge. Due to fening ridge on its rear side produced by bending and upsetting the foremost edge of the outer layer of said mold-board.
In testimony whereof I have signed my' name. i I
