To all whom it may concern: ceiving set with which co-operates the con- 65 Be it known that 1, ARTHUR ATWA ER denser structure illustrated. KENT, a citizen of the United States, resid- The rotor bearing member 4 is in the form ing at Ardmore, county of Montgomery, and of a metal sleeve, preferably chambered as State of Pennsylvania, have invented cerindicated at 5. The bearing sleeve 4 has on tain new and useful Improvements in Panel its exterior a portion 7 of reduced diameter 60 Condensers, of which the following is a extending through a hole of similar diaspecification. meter in the panel 1, with its ends spun or 'My invention relates to variable electriworked over into the form of the flange 7 cal condensers of the plate type for var1abetween which and the shoulder on the tion of capacity, as in tuning of circuits, sleeve 4 the panel 1 is snugly gripped, particularly circuits traversed by high frewhereby the bearing sleeve 4 is rigidly quency current or oscillations, asin radio fixed to the panel. t 4 At its end remote from the plate 1 the In accordance with my invention the sleeve 4 is provided with a conical or equivapanel, plate or wall of a radio receiving lent seat 8, upon which bears the conical or To set, and more particularly the metal panel similar enlargement 9 on the rotor shaft 10, or wall of a cabinet enclosing the recelvwhich latter rotates upon the bearings 6 ing set, is comprehended in or is a comand 8 in the sleeve 4 and projects beyond-the ponent part of a condenser structure or unit same to the opposite or front side of the comprising a stator element of one or more plate 1, where there is secured to the shaft plates carried upon a bolt or rod secured,1n- 10 the operating handle or knob 11, integral dependently of the rotor and its suppor with which is the dial 12, carrying the usual to the panel or wall, either dlrectly, or t0 graduations for co-operation with a pointer an insulating member which in turn is seor marker on the plate 1. The members 11 cured directly to the panel or wall. and 12 are preferably constituted of molding My invention resides in structure of the insulating material, such as bakelite or the character hereinafter described and claimed. like. Molded in the knob structure is the For an' illustration of one 'of the forms metallic insert member 13 through a wall of my invention may take, reference 1s tO be which extends the 'set screw 14 for securing had t the accompanying drawing, in which: the sleeve 13, and therefore the knob and 85 Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View, partdial, to the shaft 10, whereby the shaft 10 ly in elevation, of structure embody g my may be rotated to effect adjustment of the invention. hereinafter described rotor structure.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view of the B t th d of member 13 d th structure shown in Fig. 1. plate 1 is disposed the bowed spring 15, hav- Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View, parting th hol or aperture 16 through which ly in plan, of structure shown in F1g. 1- the shaft 10 loosely extends. The spring 15 Fig. 4 is an end elevational VleW 0f h is held under compression between the memspring. ber 13 and plate 1, thereby exerting a lon- R f rring to the drawing, 1 is the sheet 'gitudinal thrust toward the left upon the 95 metal panel, plate or wall, of a cabinet or shaft 10, as viewed in Fig. 1, causing the housing containing the elements of a radio onical h aring 9 of th haft nu ly to receiving set, as described in my appllcation bear in the conical bearing 8 in the bearing Serial No. 28,8 filed y 1925, and is member 4. The spring 15 is free or floats comprehended in or is a component of one between the members 1 'and 13, for it is not or more condenser units of the receiving secured to either of those members or to any set. other member.
On the inner side of the panel 1 is the ledge Upon the part of the shaft 10 overhanging member 2 of sheet metal, having the downbeyond or extending to the right of the bearwardly extending flange 3 secured, as by ing'member 4, as indicated inFig. 1, are spot-Welding, to the panel 1. secured one or more parallel conducting Upon the ledge member 2 may be carried leaves or plates 17 constituting the rotatable other devices or elements of the radio rearmature assembly or rotor element of the or the like.
Co-acting with the rotor plates 17 are the stator plates or leaves 19 disposed substantially parallel with each other and suitably s aced to permit interleaving therewith of the rotor plates, as well understood in the art.
The stationary armature plate assembly or stator comprises the plates 19 through apertures in which extend the rods or bolts 20. Surrounding each of the rods or bolts 20 and serving as spacers for the plates 19 are the Washers 21. The nut 22, threaded upon each of the rods 20, serves as an abutment .between which and a washer 23, held by a nut 24, the plates 19 and washers 21 are confined.
The several rods or bolts 20 may be di rectly and individually secured to the panel or plate 1, but, as indicated, and particularly when the rotor is in electrical communication with the metal panel 1, there is utilized for each bolt 20 an intervening member 25 of insulating material secured to the panel 1 by any suitable means, as for example by screw 26.
' The members 25 are preferably threaded onto the bolts or rods 20 as indicated, and the osition of the stator structure lon itudinally of the axis of the shaft 10 is ad ustable and determinable by the nuts 27 threaded upon the bolts or rods 20 and abutting hgainst' the members 25.
The structure above described is broadly of the character disclosed in the aforesaid application, particularly in that the stator structure is supported upon or secured to the panel 1 independently of the mounting or support of the rotor element, whereby the panel 1 is a component part of the condenser unit, and whereby the positions of the rotor and stator elements with respect to each other are determined by their re spective independent attachments to the panel 1. In the structure herein described and claimed the stator element is attached to the panel 1 at one or more points, each of the attachments is adjustable to efl'ect adjustment of distance of the stator structure from the panel 1 and, preferably, each attachment comprises a member of insulating material for supporting and determining the distance of the stator structure from the panel 1 and for insulating the stator structure from the panel.
