DAVID SETH KELLAM, OF WALTERBORO, SOUTH CAROLINA.
SHOCKk ABSORBER. FOR FORD GARS.Vv
Application filed August .24, 1923. Serial No. 659,210.
To all 'whom t may concern: l
Be it known that I, DAVID S. KELLAM, a citizen of the United States, `residing at VValterboro, in the county of Colleton'fand rState of South Carolina, have invented a new and useful Shock Absorber for Ford Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to spring devices, and more particularly to spring devices especially designed for use in connection with motor vehicles of a well known make.
The primary object of the invention is lto provide means to be installed at the ends of the usual spring construction to increase the flexibility of the spring, and at the same time cushion the rebound thereof, enhancing the riding qualities of the vehicle supported by the spring.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will permit of access to the shackles and spring connections to enable the structure to be readily and easily lubricated.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view disclosing a spring device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 isa sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a plan View of the spring device, and
. Figure 5 is a sectional View taken on line 5-5 of Figure 4. Y
Figure V6 is a perspective view of one of the connecting arms of the device.
' Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates an axle of a motor vehicle to which are 'secured in thev usual manner, spring perches 6. The spring is indicated generally by the reference character 7 and includes a plurality of superf posed spring leaves which vary in length, the longest Aspring being supported at the bottom of the spring proper and has its ends formed into bearings 10 to receive the shackle bolts 11 which shacklebolts secure the shackles 12 to the ends of the spring.`
As shown, the up-per leaf lof the spring construction is-relatively long as compared with the adjacent lower leaf and has its ends extended upwardly as at 13, where the same are formed with bearings 14 to receive the shackle bolts 15 that securethe shackles 16 thereto. The device forming the essence of the invention embodies arms 17 that are supported at the ends of the spring and have .their lower ends pivotally lconnected to the perches 6 vat 18, the opposite end thereof having pivotal connection with the shackles 16 at 19, wherebyv movement of thel spring Y proper is transferred to the arms 17.
The shackles 12 are connected to the arms 75 17 at 20 or at a point Vsubstantially int-ermediate the ends of the arms 17 so that a downward pressure will be directed to the arms intermediate their ends, which downward pressure is also directed to the up-per endsk of the arms and spring leaf 13. The reference character 21'designates the usual connecting bar at the ends of the side. rails of the vehicle, which connecting bar is inverted U-shaped in formation to iit over they spring in the usual manner.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that downward movement of the member 12 will result in a relative downward movement of the arms 17, causing lthe arms to swing on the perches 6, the leaf 13 which is connected to the arms 17 being bent or curved in a direction opposite to the curvatures of the remaining leaves of the spring, receives thel rebound to restrict movement of the spring esA and eliminate breaking thereof, and at the same time enable the spring to perform its I claim:-- Y the lower leaf at points intermediate the In a spring device, an axle, perehes supends of the arms and means for pivotally 10 ported 0n the axle, arms pvotally connected connecting the upper ends of the arms to with the perohes, a spring memloer ineludthe upwardly extended ends of the interme- 5 ing an upper leaf and a lower leaf and indiate spring leaf.
