VALVE MECHANISM.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new andV cating type, and more particularly for such a device of the steam driven type wherein the steam valve actuating connections are actuated from the piston rod through connections of an improved construction and are maintained properly lubricated through an improved arrangement of lubricating means hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration one form which my invention may assume in practice.

In this illustrative construction I have shown a steam driven pump of a familiar duplex type including a steam cylinder "1f, having a piston 2 and piston rod 3, which rod is in turn connected to a piston l in a pump cylinder 5, a plurality of such mechanisms being herein shown disposed side by side and each having a steam valve 6 actuated by a rod. 7 operatively connected through usual crank and link connections,v to the piston rod of the other cylinders in a usual manner not requiring` description, certain elements in these connections beingl herein improved and also lubricated with the rods in an improved manner hereinafter described. i v
Referring more particularly to this illustrative construction it will be notedV that each valve rod 7 which, as stated previously, is actuated by a connection to the other piston rod, is connected through a link 8 with its adjacent crank arm 9. This link 8 herein carries an oil reservoir thereon, herein being chambered longitudinally as at 10 to form a reservoir. This reservoir is in turn covered by a pivoted cover 11 and has a port 12 leading from adjacent its bottom to a pivot pin 13 between the rod 7 and the link 8, while a similar port 14; at the opposite end of the link and reservoir leads to a pivot pin 15 connecting the link to the crank 9. Moreover, it will be noted that the journals for the upper crank -9 (shown in full lines in F ig. 2) are supplied with lubricant from a stationary reservoir 16 located on the frame and having a suitable removable cover, through a suitable port 17. As illustrated, levers 18 connect the cranks 9 to the opposite piston rods 3 in a usual manner, one being connected to the upper end of the upper crank 9 on one side of the frame and being lubricated as above set forth from the reservoir 16, while the other is connected to the lower end of the lower crank 9 on the opposite side of the frame and. has its upper pivot 20 suitably lubricated through a port 21 leading from a reservoir 22 also on the frame. This reservoir likewise has a pivoted cover and is located so as to be accessible fromy the opposite end of the pump from the cylinder 1, i. e. from the opposite side of a vertical line passing down through the axis of its crank 9. Moreover, the 'lower end of each of vthese levers 1S is bifurcated as illustrated at23 and carries projecting inwardly from the free end of each portion or arm of the bifurcation thereof a hardened radially passaged roller 24E rotatable on a suitable hardened pin 25 which is in turn held in position by a nut and washer connection 26 on the opposite end of the pin. As shown, the outer periphery of'each of these rollers cooperates with the walls of a vertical slot 27, the slots 27 being formed in the opposite sides of a cross head or block 28 adjustably attached as at 29 to the piston rod 3 at a point between the cylinders, the construction being such that while twice the usual wearing surface is provided, the piston rodsare so held that they'can not turn and all of the connected mechanism is constantly lubricated. Moreover, it will be noted that each of these members 23 has on each side of its center line a laterally extending oifset portion provided with an upstanding boss serving to strengthen the construction and that in each boss is formed a reservoir 30, herein filled with waste and oil, and alsohaving a pivenA oted cover 3l accessible from the exterior of the mechanism. Also each reservoir is herein connected through a drop tube 32 extending through its bottom, wih the adjacent roller 24 so that the lubricant supplied to each reservoir is thus fed through the arm to a different roller in such manner as to keep the same and the walls of the slot 27 eifectually lubricated. ln vorder to provide for further lubrication as necessary for the piston rods, i have also provided on the pump frame a supplemental reservoir 33 adapted to be filled at any time through its top Se and having a pivoted normally depending bottoni discharge or outlet pipe 35 carrying a pet cock and disposable during normal running in the full line position shown in Fig. 2 with the pet cock suitably open, in which position it permits Ioil to drop on the piston rod, and also adapted to be moved up into the dotted line position shown in that figure to enable access to be had to the stufiing box when packing the same. ln a preferred form, the covers for the different reservoirs on the different moving parts are of any suit-able normally closed type to prevent loss of lubricant.
As a result of my improve@ construction it will be observedthat it is made possible to maintain effective lubrication of the various parts of the intermediate mechanism between the cylinders of the device and thereby minimize the amount of attention which the latter must receive, a feature of great importance in pumps such as shown adapt-ed to oil fieldwork, it only being necessary for these reservoirs to be filled from time to time in order to insure effective operation. Moreover, it will be noted that by reason of the disposition of the lubricating means in the links 8 actuating the valve rods 7, these links are enabled to perform the dual function of a connecting and actuating means and of a lubricating means without one function in any way interfering with the other. Similarly, through a like arrangement upon the levers 18, a like advantageous combination of function is obtained, while through the bifurcation of the lower end of these levers the amount of bearing surfaces is doubled at the same time that turning of the piston rods is overcome and a constant supply of lubricant maintained. Obviously through the use of the reservoirs on the stationary parts of the mechanism, it is also made possible to keep the bearings on these parts properly lubricated and to maintain the desired fiow to the piston rods, the adjustable lubricant pipe leading to the latter with its pet cock also enabling facility of access and a desired control when the mechanism is shut down or any desired regulation of the amount of iiow during operation.
llhile l have in this application specilically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
llVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. n a mechanism including a piston rod and a valve rod, valve operating mechanism therebetween including a pivoted lever having a laterally offset arm carrying a roller cooperating with said piston rod, and lubricating means therefor, including a lubricant reservoir on said lever above said odset portion and having an outletleading therethrough to said roller.
2. ln a mechanism including a piston rod and a valve rod, valve operating mechanism therebetween including a pivoted lever hava laterally offset arm carrying on the inner surface thereof a roller cooperating with said piston rod and means therefor including a lubricant reservoir formed integral with said arm above said o-iset portion and having a port leading through said offset portion to said roller.
3. ln a mechanism including a piston rod and a valve rod, valve operating mechanism therebetween including a pivoted lever provided with a laterally offset arm having a boss on its offset portion and carrying on the inner surface of its free end a roller cooperating with said piston rod, and lubricating means therefor including a lubricating reservoir formed in said boss having a cover accessible from the exterior of said arm and liavinO means forming a tube leading from said reservoir through said arm to said roller.
4. ln a mechanism including a piston rod and a valve rod, valve operating mechanism therebetween including a bifur-cated swinging lever having a pivot on each arm of its bifurcated portion operatively connected to said piston rod, and lubricating devices thereon comprising reservoir means on said lever having port means leading therefrom to said pivots.
5. ln a mechanism including a piston rod and a valve rod, valve operating mechanism therebetween including a bifureated swing lever having a roller on each arm of its bifurcated portion pivotally connected with said piston rod, and lubricating means on said lever including reservoir means having a plurality of ports and delivering lubricant to each roller.
6. 1n a mechanism including a piston rod and a valve rod, a valve operating mechanism therebetween including a bifureated swinging lever pivotally connected to said piston rod and ehambered to form a pluralllt) ity of independent reservoirs, said lever hav-- ing an independent port leading along each portion of the bifurcation thereof toward the extremity thereof and its pivot.
7. In a mechanism including a piston rod and a valve rod, valve operating mechanism therebetween including bifurcated lever carrying a roller yon each portion of the bifurcation thereof, and a cross head on said piston rod receiving each roller, and lubricant reservoir means on said lever for automatically lubricating said rollers, having port means delivering to each roller.
8. In a mechanism having a piston rod and a valve rod, valve operating mechanism therebetween including a bifurcated swinging lever carrying a roller on each portion of the bifurcation thereof, and a cross head on said piston rod having vertical surfaces engaged by each roller, and means for automatically maintaining lubricated said surfaces and said rollers including lubricant reservoir means on said lever delivering to each roller.
9. In a mechanism including a piston rod and a valve rod, valve operating mechanism therebetween including a bifurcated lever" carrying a pivot member on the inside of each portion of the bifurcation thereof, and lubricating means on lsaid lever including a plurality of separate reservoirs accessible from the exterior of said lever and a plurality of tubes extending from the bottoms of said reservoirs and inside said portions toward different pivot members.
10. In combination, a valve operating mechanism including a bifurcated member carrying a roller on each portion of the bifurcation thereof, and a cross head vertically slotted at each side to receive onev of said rollers, and means for automatically maintaining lubricated the bearings of said rollers and said slots including a lubricating reservoir means on said bifurcated member having port means delivering to each roller.
11. In combination, valve operating mechanism including a piston rod, a cross head vertically slotted on its opposite sides and adjustably connected to said rod, and a bifurcated valve operating member carrying a roller on the inside of each portion of the bifurcation and having said roller received in one of said slots, and lubricating means therefor including a plurality of reservoirs on said operating member above said rollers and each having a port leading toward one of the latter to lubricate said roller and its cooperating slot.
12. In combination, valve operating mechanism including a piston rod, a cross head vertically slotted on one side and carried on said rod, and a valve operating member having an offset depending portion and carrying on the inside of the lower extremity thereof a roller received in said slot, and lubricating means therefor including a lubricant reservoir carried by said valve operating member on the offset portion thereof having an outlet lubricating the bearings of said roller and said slot.
13. i In combination, valve operating mechanism including a piston rod, a valve rod, and operative connections therebetween including a plurality of pivoted members each carrying a reservoir and each having a port leading from said reservoir to a movable pivot.
14. In combination, valve operating mechanism including a piston rod, a valve rod, and operative connections therebetween including a plurality of pivoted members each chambered to form a reservoir and each hav ing a port leading from said chamber to a movable pivot.
15. In combination, valve operating mechanism including a plurality of parallel piston rods and a plurality of parallel valve rods therebetween, and operative connections between said piston rods and valve rods comprising a plurality of sets of linkages each including a plurality of chambered links carrying reservoirs lubricating their movable pivots, and a plurality of stationary reservoir means for lubricating the stationary pivots of said linkages, said stationary reservoir means being disposed between said valve rods.
