PATENT OFFICE.-
CHARLES E. AVERY, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO MANHATTAN ELECTRICAL SUPPLY COMPANY. INCORPORATED,- 0F JERSEY CITY,'NEW JERSEY, A
CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
ELECTRICAL nncnezracnn.
Application filed December 2, 1822- Se rial No. 804,466.
To all whom it may cormern:
Be it known that I. Cnannns E. Avnnr, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have in-,
vented new and useful Improvements in Electrical Receptacles, of which the followin is a specification.
My invention relates particularlyto a device ada ted to accommodate two separate plugs eit ier of the tandem or parallel blade type.
The main 'objectis to provide a compact and reliable device whidh made economically and readily wired.
In its referred form the-device has a one piece bo y with the usual T shapedentrance slots and recesses containing specially formed simple, can be contact members and binding screws readily accessible in grooves in the sides of the body.
Fig. 1 is a :front view and partial section of a device embodying the improvements of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side of the same.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view but with one of the filling pieces removed.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one ofthe contact members on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 6 is a detail view of a blank from which one of the contact is formed.
Fig. 7 is a detail view of the filling piece omitted from Fig. 3.
The body 8 of the receptacle is preferably formed of one piece of insulating material such as porcelain or molded composition and has four recesses opening at the back with T shaped entrance slots 10 in the front. These recesses are arranged in pairs on opposite View and partial section I sides of the receptacle, the recesses of a pair being connected by a longitudinal Channel 11 in order to accommodate a contact memthe recesses 9 in line with the entrance slots 10. Thebar- 12 has-ran inte'tiifa'lflange-16 which fits in a recess in the back of the recept'acle alongside'tl'ie channel 11 and issccured to the receptacle by means of a. terminal plate 17 in a recess in the front of the receptacle and the screws 18 which passthrough the receptacle. A binding screw 19 hasa threaded engagement in the plate 17 for securing the end of a conductor in place. The
wall of the receptacle adjacent the head ofthe screw 19 serves-to hold the end of the wire in place. The opposite sides of the receptacle are provided with grooves 20 for the conductor wires, and the fiange'lfifind ter. minal plate 17 are preferably shaped to correspond with the curved- .wall of these grooves.
.On the plane of the rear edge of the connecting ar 12 I may provide a shoulder 21 to serve as additional support for a filler piece such as shown in Fig. 7 which is preferably formed of fibre or paper with heads 22, 1 and a connecting strip 23 adapted to fill in the space between and cover the channel This filler pieceis made just enough larger than the recess in the receptacle so that it can be readily inserted and yet will be held frictionally in place and serve to prevent the. filling wax from running into the recesses 9 and interfering with the contact.
25 fitting in a recess in the end of the bod and held in place by a screw 26.
The body may also be provided with a central seat 27 to receive a screw for holding a face plate in position.
This invention has the advantages of a one piece body together with the advantages of combination contacts adapted to receive either kind of standard plug blades. The contact members themselves are so con structed-that they can be readily manufao tured according to standard patterns and require no particular skill in assembly. The parts are so constructed as to require a min imum number of screws for holding them together. \Vhcn once assembled. the parts are protected against accidental, displace- 22 adapted to fit the recesses 9. 9.
ment or mischievous tampering. It will also be noted that the parts are so constructed as to produce a compact device free of fragile projecting parts and having a neat, attractive and workmanlike appearance.
I claim:
1. A receptacle comprising a one piece body having two recesses on each side of the center line connected by longitudinal channels and with T shaped entrance slots, a longitudinal bar arranged on edge in each channel and having a flange in the rear, a contact secured on each end of each bar in 'said'recesses, terminal plates mounted in the face of said body and attaching screws connecting said flanges and said plates and securing'said bars and said contacts in p0sition. 1 r 4 2. A receptacle comprising a one piece bodyhaving two recesses on each side of the center line connected by longitudinal channels and with T shaped entrance slots, a longitudinal bar arranged in each channel and having a flange in the rear, :1 contact secured on each end of each bar in said recesses. terminal plates mounted in the face of said body and attaching screws connecting said flanges and said plates and securing said bars and-said contacts in position, and; filling strips fitting in said recess and covering said channels.
3. A receptacle comprising a body having two recesses on each'side of the center line connected by longitudinal channels and with T shaped entrance slots, a longitudinal bar arranged in each channel and having a flange in the rear, a one piece contact secured on each end of each bar in said recesses, a main blade and two auxiliary blades at right angles thereto, terminal plates mounted in the face of said body and attaching screws connecting said flanges and said of said recesses and accessible through its entrance slot, terminal plates with binding screws mounted in said side recesses and accessible at the front of said body and attaching screws connecting the base flanges of said bars and said plates and securing said bars and said contacts in position.
5. A plug receptacle contact comprising a' main body portion having a resilientblade with a broad contact surface extending in the same plane therewith, means for supporting one end of said body portion, narrow spring arms integrally connected with the opposite side edges of said body portion and extending at approximately right angles thereto and terminating in reversely bent blades arranged between said arms and having independently resilient tips extendingbeyond the said arms in the same general direction as the resilient blade of said main body portion, said tips having contact surfaces at right angles to the contact surface of said main body blade with a space between the bent blades for a plug blade, edges of said bent blades being close to and substantiallyparallel with the body portion and the contact surface of said main body blade but spaced apart therefrom to permit the insertion of a plug blade.
