Description
April 20`, 1926- c. GIAMMATTEO HEATER Filed Feb. 2411925 /n Ve//LO r.- Cczr/es iamma Patented Apr. 20, 1926.
AUNITED STATES CHARLES GIAMMATTEO, OF BRISTOL, CONECTICUT,
HEATER.
Application filed February To all whom t may concern.' f
' Be it known that I, OI-IAnLns GIAMMATTEO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol. county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented acertain new and useful Heater. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it 'appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ofjthis specification.
This invention relates to heaters and is herein shown as enbodied lin .an oil burner for stoves, ranges and the like.
As is well known, there are a number of devices on the market for converting coal or wood stoves into oil burners, the ordinary fire box of the stove being utilized to receive a burner which is supplied with one of the cheaper grades of oil from a tank. One such burner comprises a pluralityV of perforated cells arranged one within the other to create intervening wick chambers or fuel passages. These burners are apt to produce a smoky ame, possibly vbecause the air is not. admitted in the proper or adequate degree or because the draft is such that globules of fuel are carried through the fire box in too coarse a condition but, whatever the reason, aloss of heat results and there are other obviousY disadvantages. Y
An object ofthe invention, accordingly, is
to provide an oil burner which will produce more perfect combustion and thereby increase the available heat, economize fuel, and prevent the deposit of soot. As shown, I provide a frame surrounding` the burner and filling the space between the latter andthe sides of the fire box to constrain a large amount of air to pass Ithrough the burner from the bottom to the -top and cover this passage and the wick chambers with a screen-like member or plate having a plurality of small openings. The theory is not fully clear, but possibly this member breaks up the little globules of oil suspended in the draft and causes an intimate commingling of the fuel and air. At any ate a clear flame of great heat intensity is produced. The screen-like member shown is made. in layers, the lower one being of one size of mesh and the other is preferably slightly spaced therefrom and is of finer mesh.
To these ends and also to improve general- 24, 1925. serial Nc. 11,122.
ly on devices of the'character indicated, my
invention also rconsists in the various matters hereinafter described and claimed.
In the. drawings, Fig. l is a perspective.
view with someparts broken away.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section with the lower part of the burner in side elevation.
, Fig. 3 is a the burner.
Fig. Il is a perspective view, broken away,
- of a modication of the screen.
. The numerals lO and l2 represent the sides of the usual fire box of a stove in which a cast iron distributer 14 is mounted in any plan View ofthe lower part ofv suitable way above thev bottom of the usual 38 inthe distributer letl admit air to the cell formed bythe perforated square walls 40 and 42.v An outer perforated wall 4a' advso mits airyto theV outer wick chamber from.
around they outside of the burner. kThus a pair of concentric square wick chambers or fuel passages 4G and d8 are constituted and air has access from each side kthrough the perfor-ations of the vertical valle. The central cell 36 has an opening e9 at the top; the
cell formedby walls t() and 42 is preferably central bar 5G closinO' the s ace between thek burners. The frame rests on the usual ledges 58 and 60 at the upper ends of the fire box.
To prevent the escape of unburned oil particles with the draft and vto effect aV more adequate `interinixing ofl suc-h particles with air, a screen-like member 62,
or a reticulated plate, is placed over the top ozt` the burner. A second screen-1ike member 6st of finer mesh, or With smaller openings, is supported over the irst, preferably With a little space between as indicated at 66. The screen-like members are arranged a little above the burner andhave inclined sides 68 terminating in flanges 70 of which the loiver one rests on the trame 54. Combustion apparently begins at the Wick Q8'and extends to the screens.
In Figure 4, screen-like members'Q and 7d are supported in a rectangular aine 76 which will lit and surround the edges of the burner. The lovver layer 72 o'fcoarser mesh rests on wires T8 which lconnect opposite sides of the trame and these wires rest on the tops of the burner cells. YWires SO are placetL crosswise of the Wires 7S and serve to space and support the upper screen-like member of finer mesh.
Although the invention h-as been described by reference to certain specific constructions, it should be understood that, inits broader aspects, it is not necessarily limited to the forms selected for mere A illustrative purposes.
I claim:
l. In apparatus of the character described, the combination, vvith the lire box of a range, of an oil burner set therein, said oil burner having a plurality of concentric. Wick chambers with perforated side Walls, anda pair of coextensive screen-like plates of fine mesh extending across the re box overthe top of said burner; substantially as described.
2. In apparatus of the character described,
.the combination with an oil burner having an opening for the passage ofair and a surrounding Wick chamber, ot a member sup-V ported over the upper end of said opening andl chamber and having a plurality of small openings, and asecond member arranged over the first and having a plurality` of smaller openings; substantially7 as described.
El. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with an oil burner having an opening for the passage ot" air und a surrounding wick chamber, ot a screen-like plate covering the upper end of said opening and chamber, and a second screen-like plate oi: vfiner mesh arranged over and spaced a little from the lirst plate; substantially as described.
il. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with an oil burner having an opening for the passage of air and a surrounding wick chamber, of a screen-like plate covering the upper end of said opening and chamber, said member having a flat raised portion and inclined sides; substantially as described.
5. In apparatus ot' the character described, in combination, a lire box, an oil burner set in said lire box and having an air passage from top to bottom, a screen-lilix plate covering the top of said burner and passage, a second screen-like plate olf finer mesh ar ranged over the irst, and means Ytor closing the space between the burner and the sides` of the tire box; substantially as described.
(S. In apparatus of the character described, i-n combination, a tire box, an oil burner set in said hre box and having a passage from top toy bottom, a thin plate surrounding the tcp of said burner and supported on the top of the tire box -for closing the space between the burner and the sides or the tire box, and screen-like members of line mesh supported by said frame and covering the top or said burner and passage; substantially as described.
7. In apparatus of the character described, in combinationV a lire box, an oil burner serin said tire box and having an air passage from top toV bottom, a frame fitting the sides of said burner and closing the space between the burner and the sides of the iire box, a screen-like member supported by said frame and covering the top ot said burner and passage, and second screen-like member ot liner mesh arranged over the iirst meml er; substantially as described.-
8. In apparatus of the character described, in combination, a .tire box, a burner set in said fire box and having means for supplying air and fuel, a screen-like member covering the top of said burner, and a second screen-like member of liner mesh supported directly over the iirst; substantially as de scribed.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aliix n y signature.
CHARLES GIAMMATTEO.
