EZRA CROWELL, OF BELFAST, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-WASHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,039, dated December 22, 1874; application led September 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA CROWELL, of Belfast, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented a new and lmproved Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification:
The invention is an improvement in the class of washing-machines or devices consisting,
l chiey, of a hollow sheet-metal cylinder and a plunger reciprocating therein. The improvement relates to constructing the cylinder with vents on the side near the top, and connecting them, by means of an exterior tube, hood, or casing, to allow escape of air and water past the side of the piston, as hereinafter described.

Ais a hollow cylinder of sheet metal, closed at one end only by a cap or head, B, and having inside a piston, G, arranged to work up and down easily, but so as to lift the water and force it back. D is the rod of the piston,
which extends up through the head B far enough to be used for forcing the piston down, and it has a spring, E, for raising it, the spring being compressed between the collar F and the top B when the piston is pushed down. G is avent at the top of the cylinder for the escape of the water that may leak past the piston to the space above, and H is an opening to admit air below the piston when in the upper part of the cylinder, to avoid the forming of a vacuum thereat. These openings are inclosed by a hood, l, torprevent the water escaping through them.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The cylinder A, having the apertures G and H on the side and near the top, the connected exterior hood or casing` I, and the imperforate, closely-tt-ing piston C, all combined and arranged to operate as shown and described.
