An upper shaft and a lower shaft 26 are supported by a pair of swinging arms 27,
'the lower ends of which are connected. with the shaft 28. A series of'pinions 29 are rotative on the shaft 25 by the racks 22, and a series of pinion-30 are rotative on the shaft 26 by the racks 23. The pinions 29 mesh with the-pinions 30 and are in vertical alinement therewith so that when the pinions 29 are'engaged with the racks 22 the pinions 30 are out of engagement with the racks 23 and vice versa (Figs. 5 and 7). Each of the pinions 29 is attachedto a transfer tripdisc 31 having a cam shoulder 32 for each series of ten teeth on the pinions. As shown each pinion 29 is provided with forty teeth, so that there are four cam shoulders 32 on each of the discs 31." Each of the pinions 30 is attachcd to a transferptrip disc 33 having a cam shoulder 34 for .each series of ten teeth on the pinion. As shown, each pinion 30 is provided with forty teeth so that there are four cam shoulders 34' on each of the discs 33. A series of transfer latches 35 for the discs 31 are pivotally supported upon a rod 36 and have shouldered ends 37 upon which the cam shoulders 32 rest when the ca1culating device is clear and when the pinions 29 engage the racks 22 (Fig. 2). A .series of transfer latches 38 for the discs 33 are pivot- .ally supported upon a rod 39 and have shouldered ends 40 against the beveled under edges of which the beveled edges ofthecam shoulders 34 rest when the calculating device is clear and when the pinions 30 engage the racks 23. But when the inions 29 are in line with their racks 22 an their latches the )inions 30 are out of line with their racks 2 and their latches 38, and vice versa. The latches 35 are connected with the corresponding latches 38 by links 41 and both series of latches38 are actuated to latching position by springs 42 connected with the latches Also, each two con'nected latches and 38-are moved to unlatching position at the same time because of their link connection'41 (Fig. 3 I
\Vhen the machine is clear and at rest pawls 43, pivotally supported upon arod 44, extend over andcngage the upper ends of the rack plates 20 and thereby hold said rack plates down in their lower'position's. The pawls 43 have iingcrs"' 45=on their lower ends engaging extended portions of 'thelatches 35 when said latches 35 are in latching position. The pawls4-3 are thereby held in position to prevent upward transfer movement of the rack plates 20. \Vhen any one of the latches 35 is operated by its corresponding transfer trip disc 31, or when any one of the BEST AVAILABLE COPi latches 38 is operated by its corresponding disc 33, the extended portion of the latch 35 is raised above the finger-.45. (Fig. 3) permiti ting the spring 46 of the corresponding latch pawl 43 to actuate the same from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in F ig; 3, thus permitting upward transfer movement of the corresponding rack plate 20. This is irrespective of whether the latches 35 and 38 were operated by the transfer trip disc 31 or by the transfer trip disc 33. After any transfer movement the released pawl or pawls 43 are restored to normalposition by a bail 47 supported on the rod 44 and operated by a link 48, at the next operation of the main shaft 16 of the ma- .chine, as hereinafter described.
I will now describe the mechanism for shifting the pinions 29 and 30 to and from positions for operation by their respective racks. 22 and 23. -The normal position is that in which the inions 29 are in position for operation by the racks 22 and in which the pinions 30 are out of line with their racks 23 (Figs. 6 and 7). When the parts are in such relationship the machine may be operated in ordinary addition. When it is desired to operate the machine in the performanceof examples ofsubtraction it is necessary to shift the pinions to position so that the pinions 30 will be operated by the racks 23 so that the pinions 29 will be out of line with the racks 22.
