An object of this invention is to provide a mine car` having an improved flooring or bottom formed of a plurality of sections which are of a special construction and secured together in an improved manner.

Another object yor the invention is to so construct the mine car that the side slope sheets of the bottom may be firmly secured to the Vintermediate bottom section and braced against downward movement'by the wheel shields which are secured to the side slope sheets and extend in overlapping relation to the intermediate bottom section.

Another object of the invention is to so construct this mine carthat the journals for the axles may extend beneath the intermediate bottom section and besecured by fastener bolts which extend through the in' tei-mediate section and through the portions ot the wheel hoods or shields which overlap 'uit side.

` Another object of the' invention is to provide a mine; car in which the. intermediate section ma be formedv of long gitudinally disposed* oor boards vhaving `a buliing column disposed between certain of the floor boards' and these floor boards andthe builing column secured in place by fasteners passing through cross ties extending beneath the flooring and having extended end portions which are vsecured to the side slope sheets andv terminating in upwardly disV posed portions forming `posts for the side walls of the car.

From an inspection of F ig. 3 it will be seen that these side slope sheets are held in close engagement with the side walls thereby providing a tight joint which will prevent fine material from sifting out of the car. The inner side portions of the side slope sheets extend downwardly as shown at 16 for close contacting engagement with the sideede'e faces of the intermediate door section andI terminate in inwardly disposed side iianges 17 which extend beneath the adjacent floor boards where they are sccured by the fasteners i8 and 22 and also hy the cross ties 1l, the `flanges 16 and l? with the slope sheet adjacent thereto foi-1ning in etiect supporting sills.

r`he axles i9 which carry the wheels 20 upon their end portions extend transversely -beneath the car body and are mounted in journals 21 which extend beneath the intermediate floor section and said sills thereby supporting the bodyv portion of the car and are secured by fastener bolts 22. These fastener bolts 22 will securely hold the journals in place but will permit the journals to be easily and quickly removed when necessary. The car wheels are of such size that the upper portions of the car wheels would strike the side slope sheets 13 and therefore in order to accommodate the upper portions of the wheels each of the. side slope sheets will be provided either with openings 23 throu h which the Wheels extend or these side slope sheets will he crimped upwardly as shown in 4 and 5 to provide pockets 24. It is necessary to ciose the openings 23 to prevent the material placed in the car from passing through these openings and therefore each of the openings 23 is covered by a hood 25 which is secured upon the upper face of the side slope sheet by rivets or other suitable fasteners 26. rihese hoods have upwardly extending dome shaped portions which are disposed over the openings 23 and in spaced relation to the wheels as shown in Fig. 3 and each hood is further provided with an extended base portion 27 which extends in overlapping relation to the adjacent door hoards of the intermediate hoor section. lThese extended base portions of the hoods are secured 'to 'the door hoards hy fasteners 2.3 and. are further secured hy 'the fastener bolts 22 which in addition to passing through the i'loor boards also pass through these extended portions of the hoods. i/'henthe form of pocket shown in Figs. d and 5 is made nse of to receive the upwardly extending portions ot the wheels it is not necessary to provide large hoods shown in Figs. 1, 2and3 lout it is necessary to provide a reinrorcing cover 1n the form of a small hood or protecting shield wnicn Levee-ee will prevent the pockets from being dented and moved into engagement with the wheels by heavy lumps of coal or other material thrown into the car. Therefore there has been provided protecting hoods or shielding strips 29 which extend transversely across the pockets Y24 as shown in Fig. 4. These hoods or shields 29 are substantially of an inverted rvshape as shown in Fig. 5 and each has one end secured to the upper face of the side slope sheet by the fasteners 30 and its other end portion extending in overlapping relation to the adjacent floor hoard of the intermediate floor section and secured by the fastener holts 22. These' strips will effectively protect the pockets 24. and prevent them from being damaged by heavy material thrown into the cai' and further prevent injury to the car wheels which would he caused hy the pockets being forced int-o vertical cngagement with the flanges of the wheels.

What is claimed is:
