UNITED STATES WILLIAM E. WASHB URN,
PATENT OFFICE OF HAMILTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SHUTTER-WORKERS AND SLAT-OPERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,658, dated December 1874; application filed March 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM ELLIs WASH- BURN, of Hamilton, Hancock county, Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Combined Window-Shutter Workers and Blind-Slat 0perators, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in devices for opening and closing window-shutters and blindslats separately. It is, made substantially as hereinafter set forth, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I, Sheet 1, is a horizontal section of my combined devices. Fig. II, Sheet 2, is a detail of the parts on the inside to operate the blind-slats. Fig. III is a detail of the parts on the inside to operate the shutter-worker. Fig. IV is a detail of the parts outside to operate the blind-slats.
The invention consists more particularly in making the shaft that passes through the wall in two parts, concentrically arranged so as to separately operate the window-shutter and the blind-slats without their interfering with each other when one shaft is used for both, as will be hereinafter more fully described; also, in the use, in combination with the above, of bevel-wheels outside to work the blind-slat operator, and other details to perfect the combined devices.
A double-concentric shaft passes through the frame at the side of the window, with bearings A A within and without. This consists of central shaft A, journaled in the bearings, and arranged to open and close the shutter E, and of the hollow shaft A on shaft A between the bearings, and turning freely on it, arranged to open and close the blindslats separately from the devices moving the window-shutter. Shaft A has a crank, F, in
side to turn it by. This bears teeth around its hub part, like a wheel, by which it is held in any position by a latch, F", engaging with it, to hold the shutter in any position-closed, open, or at any intermediate point. The latch F is borne by a tilting lever, T, arranged with both ends at right angles, and weighted,
so that it may be turned in two positions to throw the latch into or out of gear with the crank-teeth. Shaft A bears a bevel-wheel, H, at its outer end. This turns a bevel-Wheel, H, revolving horizontally, and bearing on its shaft an arm, I, attached at its outer end to the shutter E by a rod, E, and a slidingjunction part, I, so that, as the bevel-wheel is turned, the shutter will be opened orv closed. Shaft A bears at its inner end a crank, K, to turn it by. This bears a segmental Wheel with teeth, into which a catch-tooth engages to hold it at any point. This catch is borne by a lever, K, and is beveled on one side so it will slide over the teeth one way to open the blind-slats and catch the other Way to hold them at any point. The lever K can be lifted to release the slats and let them be closed. Shaft A bears at its outer end a segmentwheel, L, engaging on another, L, on the shutter E when the shutter is closed, and parting freely when it is opened. Wheel L has a shaft through the shutter, with an arm, M, on its inner end, connected by a rod to the slat-rod N, so that, when the shaft A is turned, the blind-slats are turned to open or close them. The arm M has a spring attached, by which it has a tension to keep the blind-slats closed when not held open by the devices.
I claim- 1. In a combined window-shutter worker and slat-operator, the double shafts A A, arranged concentrically for separately opening and closing the shutter and operating the blind-slats, substantially as set forth.
2. The crank F, shaft A, catch-lever F, bevel-wheels H H, arm I, and shutter E, combined to operate the shutter, as set forth.
3. The crank K, shaft A, catch-lever K, Wheels L L, and arm M, combined to operate the blind-slats, as set forth.
WILLIAM ELLIS WASHBURN.
