Description

March 9 1926. 1,576,389
c. M. WlLKlNS FULLER Filed March 9, 1925 INVENTOR WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented *Mar. 9, 1926.
Wane FULLER.
Application filedwMarch 9,61925. "Seria1:No. 14,15.8.
To all whom it may concern:
EBe it known that-I, CnA-nLnsdl/I. WVILKINS,
:a citizen of theI-lnited-States, residing at "-Sm-ithfield, in the county of 'iFayette. and State of ,Pennsylvania, have invented :new and useful Improvements in Pullers, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to a puller forrpulling sleeves from shafts and the like; the general object of the invention. being to provide a supporting member having a movable member therein which carries a projection for engaging a hole in a sleeve with means for causing the pro ection to engage the hole when the puller is placed in the sleeve so that the sleeve will be contracted and pulled from the shaft by a turning and pulling movement of the puller.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for locking the projection in the hole in the sleeve when necessary.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the outer end of the device.
Figure 4: is aview of a sleeve which the device is intended to remove or replace in ashaft.
As is well known some of the sleeves of certain types of automobiles are constructed, as shown at A, in Figure 4, so that when placed in a shaft or housing, such as shown at B in Figure 1, the sleeve will expand and thus be held in place by friction and by the engagement of a tip a on the sleeve with an opening I) in the shaft. It is the object of my invention to provide a tool for removing such a sleeve from its shaft or housing and replacing it or another sleeve. In carrying out my invention I provide a tabular new at i which 13 diameter slightly less thanz-the. sleevetso; that. it can enter; the sleeve. A cross sectional. curvledLstripwQ is 1 placed in tl1e:tubular membertwith ,one end ,held in placebyaclip 3.:zwhich is;fastenedato the. inner'wa'lluof the member, -and byaaabolti which passes through, a: hole in the tubular member and is fastened to; the strip. spring :5. on thebolt engages a nut 6' there- -on so that the :spri-ng tenols to. .hold the strip an ;1int'erio'1--,-;pI 1'ti0: v fc the tubu ar member. The strip has a projection or key 7 having a flat outer surface and which is adapted to engage the oil hole a in the sleeve when the puller is placed in the sleeve. A handle bar 8 is adapted to be passed through holes 9 formed in the outer end of the tubular member to manipulate the same. A collar 10 is placed on the tubular member to form a shoulder.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the device is placed in asleeve with the shoulder formed by the collar bearing against the outer end of the sleeve the projection or key 7 will be in a position to engage the hole a when the puller is turned to bring said key opposite the hole. In placing the device in the sleeve the bolt 4: is pressed inwardly so as to swing the strip 2 inwardly and thus bring the outer end of the key 7 flush with the tubular member so that this key will not interfere with the insertion of the device in a sleeve. When the device has been partly inserted the bolt can be released as then the key will simply slide over the inner wall of the sleeve. When the shoulder formed by the collar strikes the end of the sleeve the device is rotated until the key comes opposite the hole when the spring 5 will cause it to enter the hole. Then by giving the puller a turning movement to the left and pulling on the handle the sleeve will be contracted and withdrawn from the shaft. If necessary the nuts 6 can be tightened on the bolt to lock the key in the hole though this is very seldom necessary.
A new sleeve. can be put in place with this catches the sleeve and as it has but a few working parts it will last for a long time and will not get out of order.
It is thought from the foregoin descrip tion that the advantages and nove features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the ber and passing through an opening in the tubular member for engaging the oil opening in a sleeve, yieldable means for normally holding the carrier with the key projecting but permitting the carrier to be pushed inwardly to'retract the key and adjustable controlling means therefor included in the yieldable means.
2. A sleeve puller comprising a tubular ,member, ahandle connected therewith, a
longitudinally extending strip within the member, a bracket for movably supporting one end of the strip, a key carried by the other end of the strip and passing through a hole in the tubular member, a bolt carried by the strip and passing through the tubular membeiya spring on the bolt and a nut on the bolt for adjusting the tension of the spring. tubular member, a key carried by said mem- In testimonywhereof I afiix my signature.
