J. J. CASEY PI PE HANGER Original Filed Jan. 31 1924 Patented Mar. 9, 1926.
UNITED STATES FATE.
rrrn HANGER.
\ Application filed January 31, 1924, Serial No. 689,640. Renewed February 5, 1926.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JOHN J. CAsnY, citizen of the United States, residing at Gloucester, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe Hangers, of which the following is aspecification, ref erence being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to the hanging of ipes and has special reference to adjustable devices used for this purpose.
The object of my invention is to provide a pipe hanger which will. be an improvement in point of construction and arrangement over previous devices in the matters of securing in position and adjusting as to length, while being simple of construction.
In order to attain my objects I provide a device consisting of two parts, an upper part comprising a base plate to which a screw or bolt for securing it in place is fixed and from which are extended downward two arm members; and a. lower part adapted to form sliding engagement therewith and to be adjustable thereon. The lower part is arranged with claw fingers at the ends of the arms which engage in holes spread apart in pairs down the middle of the arm mem-' bers of the upper part.
,By these means the objects stated are accomplished, together with other incidental objects which will more clearly be made to appear by the further detailed description hereinafter.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the complete hanger;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the lower U- shaped member;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the upper member; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the base plate.
Referring to the drawings A andB designate the upper and lower members respectively. a is a screw aflixed in the center of a base plate a so as to extend upwardly, but having its head a on the lower side of the base so that it may be screwed into fastening position from beneath by removing the lower member B. a designates downwardly extending arms in which are the spaced perforations a The lower member is U-shaped in general with two upwardly extending slide arms I), cooperating with the base arms a Z2 designates guide flanges each formed by turning an edge of one of the slides inward so as to allow a sliding engagement with the upper arms, a Z2 is the edge of the ring part b of the U- shaped member, turned in so as to strengthen the same. b is one of two spring fingers formed integral with and at the end of the slide arms of the lower member and b is a claw affixed at the end of same, adapted to fit into the perforations a In order that it may more nearly fit around a pipe the lower portion of the U- shaped member may be curved into a circular shape as is shown in the drawings. The hanger is preferably constructed of copper or similar metal so that the same size hanger, being flexible to a certain degree is adaptable to pipes of varying diameter.
The hanger is secured in position by engaging the screw a in the desired pla'ce so that the base will rest flat against the surface. It is adjusted by springing the claws 5 out and sliding the lower member B up or down to the desired position of support. Perfect alignment of pipe by this means is not only simple of attainmentbut uniform support of the same is assured, without complicated adjustments. It is to be noted, also, that the weight of the pipe on the hangers locks the parts against an accidental displacement.
It is to be understood that all such changes and modifications as fall fairly within the terms of the appended claims are contemplated by me and that divers modifications may be made in matters of detail without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z j 1. A hanger for pipes consisting of a base plate, attaching means therefor extending upwardly, a pair of downwardly extending parallel arms formed integral with the said base'plate, a lower U-shaped member, having a loop for supporting the pipe and two upwardly extending parallel arms with their edges bent inwardly so as to form slides receivingv the two base arms, and means for holding said lower member in position on said upper member.
2. A hanger for pipes consisting of a base plate, attaching means therefor extending upwardly, a pair of downwardly N OFFICE. v
extending parallel arms formed integral With said base plate, with openings spaced apart in opposite pairs down the middle of said arms, a lower U-shaped member having a loop for supporting the pipe and 'tWo upwardly extending parallel arms held in sliding engagement with the base arms, the said lower'arms being fitted with claw fingers at their upper ends adapted to engage in the openings in the base arms.
3. Ahanger for pipes consisting-0t abuse plate, attaching means therefor extending 1 upwardly, a pair of downwardly extending.
parallel arms formed integral with the said base plate, a lower U-shaped member hava loop for supporting the pipe, the edges of which loop .are turned in .soas to reinforoe the same, and two upwardly extending parallel arms having their edges also turned in to stiffen the arms and at the same 20 time to fomnislides to receive the base arms,
and means for holding said lower member in position on said upper member. In testimony whereof. I hereunto my signature.
