CMBINEB CONTANER AND ETJMDRB Application filed August 11, 1922. Serial. No. 581,05.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, l-lnnMAN GonnsMrrH, a citizen of the United Statesmnd resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Combined Containers and Humidors, of which the following' is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined container and humidor and more particularly to a container for packaging cigars or the hle adapted to be employed as a hunndor.
during vending and periodic consumption of the cigars; and has special reference to the provision of containers or cans of the type non used for packaging' cigars modiiied by simple changes to be rendered serviceable as a humidor during the period of sale or use of the cigars. i
As is well knowln one ot' the common methods of packaging and selling cigars or the like consists in the employmentl of a cylindrical container or can provided with a bottom having a plurality ot' so-calledy breathing perforations intended to permit a circulation of huinidiied air through the can to keep the cigars therein in a moistened and good condition. These cigar cans are designed and constructed with the intent that the cigar dealer keep or store the cigar filled cans in a moist atmosphere so as to provide for lnnnidied air circulating through the breathingperforations. In selling these cigars tothe consuming public the cans should ordinarily be kept within the dealcrs show or display case so as to have the cigars continuously subjected to the action of the humidor forming partof the display case. In practica however, the dealers have been inclined to place and have formed the habit of keepingan opened cigar can -on the top of the display case and on the counterq thus removing` the cigars from the humidiled influence and subjecting them te the atmosphere. This practice results in causinrapid deterioration and drying of the cigars, rendering them undesirably brittle and unsaleable. To avoid this objection and to permit the selling` of the cigars directly from-the-counter while subjecting the cigars to the proper humidifying atmosphere is a prime desideratum of my present invention.
The principal objects of my present inven tion may be said to include, besides the provision of a container capable of performing .the inturn'edmarginal lip lil thereof.
the service above referred to, the provision of a container of the type or kind now employed in commerce in which the top cover is made to interchangeably fit the top and bottom of the can body and is provided with an absorbent substance which, when the cover is removed from the can top and fitted onto the can bottom during' sale or gradual consumption of the cigars, is lnoistened or saturated with water so that-the air circulating through the perforated bottom will 'be mois tened or humidilied; the'furtheipro'vision of a container and humidor constructed to permit the fitting or mountingof the cover on the can bottom with the absorbent substance spaced from the perforated bottom so as to provide an air chamber therebe tween and the still further provision of a container and humidor of this nature in which the ordinary and presently employed can is utilized and moditied in a simple and inexpensive manner to permit ofthe eflicieut performance of the new uses referredv To the accomplishment of the foregoing and vsuch other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the elements and their relation one to the other, as hereinafter particularly described and sought to be defined in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which show a preferred. embodiment of my invention and in which:
Figure l is an elevational view of 'the container and humidor with part broken away,
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view thereof showing the container when used as a humider,
Figure 3 is a reduced view showing the bottom of the containemand Figure 4f is a view of a detail. y
Referring now more in detail to the draw'- ings, for packaging the cigars I provide a container or can which comprises a receptacle having the cylindrical body side wall l0 usually made of sheet metall provided at the top end with the marginal bead ll1 and at the lower end with a bottom l2 pro- -vided with a. plurality ofspaced so-called breathing perforations l2', the said botH i tom being preferably inset and comprising a marginal flanged element secured to the body side wall l0 as by interlocking with The receptacle or can body is provided with the io permit oi the cover being fitted izo iis oetanged cover 11i nornieiiy closing the 'iop of die some and eonstrueed to inferehetngeobiy iii? ehe top and boiiom of the same, een 'body' 'lO being' likewise oonstrucfed 'bomn es shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings, during seiiiog and consuming uS'e of the cigars.
As heretofore mentioned, the deeiei or Storedoeepei', in the prior practise, after opening a een` places the saine and cigars there in on the Counter, the cigar can being time subjeeed to the indueioee of ordinary at mosgherio conditions unil the quantity of cigars lieekeged in the een is sold to the erede. meoioned, the cigars during soie when removed from he proper i'minidifying ojo Biosphere, rapidly dry and become objectionobie and uneeiezibie. For the purpose of: ois'vin'ing iiis objection, i provide" #die iop cover with an absorbent substance which may be moist-oiled after ehe :seme is removed from ehe een body and which, when the cover is mooneed on the bottom of the een body, eci-S :i iiul'nidiiiying medium for inoisening the oir circulating 'through ldie breoting peiiorations of ehe performed boitoi l More epeoioaliy, l take one or more sheets i of bioting peper ood inse t idle Seine in the top cover le., he sheets being; carried by che cover :md heid in position in the cover in any desired wey, es for example by outiog the sheets so es io frieioneiij/ iii', the iange of fue cover. if desired the cover may be provided Vwith en ouwordiy turned bead such nele in Fie'. A3.- or eniiobiy receiving the shees. @Vith this construction he sheets oie. ebsoroent mai'oeriei normally lie beween the inuriied bead 1l of the con body and ehe nop Wali of he cover 14g and when iiie said cover is removed from the iop and mounted on ille V"oozom of the can body the sheets of biotn tino" peper; when moistened or eaii-ui'eted i. wil nomidify the air cireideim ing through the perforated bottom l2.
For die purpose of providing a, construeeion in Whiohihe absorbent sheets l5 are suiizeby spaced from the perforated Bottom 12 i provide ineens whereby the cover 14- mey be so positioned on the 'bottom of the can body so as co produce an air chambei 16 between ih@ perforated bottom and the iimriidifyiog materiai. To this end, in addition to providing on inset bottom 12, the een body l0 may also be provided with a marginal bead 17 adjacent the bottom end of the side wail and so positioned as to form e stop ineens cooperating with the izmgze of he ,cover le to position or loeete die @over in the manner shown in Figure?, of the drawinge, with :in nir chamber 16 between the perforated iiotom and the biotier Sheei, or. sheets l5.
The manner of making; und using my oontoinei' end iiumidor will be fully apparent', .from ehe above detaiied description thereof. ii; wiii be furiher apparent time with the grovision of the absorbent sheets l5 Carried by the top cover. 1J: that the dealer will be ene-bied io ooninue to display the cigars on the counter and Seli die eine with' economy end convenience, wiihou causing the 'rapid deei'ioretion and drying,T o' the cigars, fixe sailnet/ing with water o i the bloiting sheets l5 producing :i seiioninined imniidof unit.
'Vi/'hilo i have shown my device in ille preferred form, it Wiil be .obi/ions that mamy changes and inodiicetions may be made in the sructure disclosed without; departing 'from the spiril of the invention, defined in he following claim.
i claim:
A container for tobacco products, ineluding o, body end a slip-oo izinged cover, und o sheet' or pad of blotting paper held Within. ehe delige against the body of the Cover, said Sheet being of ou oreal io t Within the Piange to preventdisplacement thereof, the Hooge of the cover iizivingen internal bead 'zo iioid *die sheet in piace.
y Signed at New York city, in the ooteoty o New York and Sziiie of New York this dey of July, A. 1922.
