HAIR WAVER.
Application filedz April-24, 1925. Serial No. 2556811 The present invention is in some respects- ``designed as an improvement on the haii` waver-forming the subject of an application filedl in the name of. 7. N. Lurcott, under date of December 17, 1924; Serial Number 756,505.
The prime object of .the present; invention is-to provide a hair waver having` instrumentazlities'that will produce a Marcel wave andv in a manner toV give reasonable permanency to the wave.
The nature of my invention and itsdisting-uishing features and advantagesV will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is toi-be'had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it bei-ng'understood that the drawings are nierely illust'rative of one example' of theinvention.
Figure- 1 is aplan view of a hair waver embodying my invention, a pluralityp of the swing-img elements to be hereinafter men.- tioned being shownraised and Va-pair ofsaid swingable elements being shown in the low-V ered position at the top of saidfigure;
Fignre 2: is a fragm'entary ho'rizontal Vsec tion on-the line 2-2, Figu-re et;
Figure 3 is aV transverse Vertical section as indicated. by the line 3-8,.Figure 1 but showing all the swingable elements inV a partially lowered position ready to engage the hair;l w
' Figure tvis a longitudinal' Vertical section through my improved hair waver;`
Figure 5 is a detail in transverse Vertical section showing a pair of the swingable elements lowered to a position to engage the hair, and another pair of the swingable elements in a higher position;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary end View of the hair waver;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary view in longitudinal Vertical section given to show another form of the fixed combs.
port-ing means form no in carrying out my invention in p 'acticeany suitable frame and supporting `1neans are provided, there-being shownl a fragment of aA standard 10 having Va fitting 11 secured thereto by a bolt 12 and Wing, nut 131. The
fitting 11 is received between .depen'ding' bracket members 18 onV the frame 17 and' boltsv16v having nuts 14. and washers 15 are passed through the braclret members 18 and through the fitting' 11'.
part of the present invention.
I provide a seriesof fixed combs and Aa series of shiftable combs.` The movable combs 20 are a-rranged in pairs the combs of a pair being disposed at the opposite sides of each` fixed comb. A plura'lity of the' fixed.
combs` 19v are inv rigid relation to electric heating elements 21. Otherfixed combs 1,19:
a'lternate with those'combs 119 associated withl the electric heating elements 21, said fixed combs 119 being rig-id with the frame 17. Thecombs 2.0 of a pair are integral with eachz other through the mediuin of a' U- shaped base'22 which extendsV about the under sideof-each heating element 21 so as to have guided movement Von said heating. element. The base 22 has anV extension 122 The frame' and sup,
atv each end which extends through the'ends: i'
117 of the frame 17.
Then a strandof hair (A) is laid'across the device through thezseveral combs, the movement of' the combs 20 relatively to the fixed combs 19 yand 119 will produce waves in the .strandl of hair as indicated at the top of Figure 1. The device therefore constrncted vas described will effectively produce Wavesin the hair.
In order' that a Marcel wave be produ'ced, Iprovide meansv to engage the waves of the hair at the sides of the comb. In the illustratedexample, I provide blades or plates 23 arranged in pai'rs, platesof av pair being integral with each other at an: end thereof, said end being secured asby a pivot 24 to` a fixed part at an' end of the hair waver. .The oppcsite end of each pair of plates 23 has a handle 25. Said plates 23 are adapted to be lowered from the dotted line position, Figure 4, to the position shown at the left of Figure 5 in engagement with. and exerting pressure upon hair Waves. The pivot 24 it Will be observed from Figure 4 is located above the plane of the bases or backs of they combs 19, 20. The result is that the plates 23, When fully lowered to operative position between the combs, will -exert equal pressure along strands of hair run through the combs at different points I as shown in Figure 4. At the opposite ends of the frame 17 are fixed earrying handles In the Lurcott application referred to above, means is provided to operate the movable combs. The present invention embodies a slight modifi'cation of the aforesaid means in said filed application. Thus, the integral pairs of eombs 20 are each'operated through the medium of a Vertical spindle 80 having a head 31 and depending from the frame 17. The spindle extends through the bottom of the frame and has a lever 32 fixed thereon which is pivoted at one end as at 33 to a link 3a, the opposite end of which is pivoted as `at 35 to the base 2:2 of a pair of combs 20. The deseribed operating means is provided for each pair of combs 20. As in the aforenamed application the lever 32 at the opposite end from the pivot 33 has a stud 87 adapted to engage in any one of an arcuate series of depressions 36 in frame 17. rFhe positioning of the lever with the stud 37 in a given de'- pression 36 will 'cause a given length of wave in the strand of hair A. The engagement of the stud 37 with a depression 36 serves to lock the lever 32, spindle 30, and link 34, as well as the combs 20 actuated by the link, in fixed position, .said looking means and its function corresponding with vthe means and the mode of functioning thereof disclosed in the aforenamed filediapplieation.
In the use of the device a strand of hair is disposed transversely between the teeth 40 of the fixed and movable combs with the teeth alined. Then` the movable combs are shiftedi by turning the spindles 30. In pra'ctice, one pair of fixed combs 20 is actuated `first, then the adjacent pair of fixed combs, "and so on in succession. After the hair has been waved by the shifting of the movable combs relatively to the fixed combs, the plates or blades 23 are brought down and vthey move in planes in close relation to the Wlimovable combs in a manner that when said blades are brought down, pressure is exerted by the same against the sides of the respective Waves. In the form shown in Figure 7 an addisliltional feature is provided to hold the hair against rising on the 'combsl Said feature consists of slots 319 formed in one edge of the fixed combs 219 at the-base thereef and extending longitudinally so that as the movable eombs are shifted, the strand of hair lwill move into the slots 40.
I would. state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practieal embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be eonsiderably varied without departure from the spirit of the device as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. A hair waver including a series of combs, and a second series of combs movable longitudinally relatively to the first combs to produce a wave in a strand of hair, said lirst-mentioned combs being formed with longitudinal slots in the teeth thereof at the base of the teeth for holding the strands of hair against displaeement along the combs.
2. A hair waver including a series of combs, and a second series of combs movable longitudinally relatively to the first combs to produ'ce a wave in a strand of hair, said first-mentioned combs being formed with longitudinal slots in the teeth thereof at the base of the teeth for holding the strands of hair against displacement along the 'combs; together with 'means movable between the teeth and into engagement with a strand of hair to exert pressure on the waved strand or to a position out of engagement with the hair permitting release of the same.
3. A hair waver including two series of combs, one series shiftable longitudinally relatively to the other for waving a strand of hair, and swingable elements mounted to move in a plane between fixed and movable combs, or to a position away from the combs for engaging the waved strand of hair, the teeth of the combs being formed With means to engage the strand of hair and prevent its moving lengthwise of the teeth of the combs.
4. A hair waver including heating elements, a series of fixed combs in rigid relation to the heating elements in the general longitudinal plane thereof, additional fixed combs alternating with the first mentioned fixed combs, and movable combs alternating with the fixed combs and shiftable longitudinally thereto.
