In Figure 16 these letters are completely restored as which add to the interest. of the picture.
Bake, for example, the stage of develop-v ment of thepuzzle in Figure 7. The puzzle phrase is ["he tenants pipe dream. Theartists hand-i118 now introduces into. the picture a card 22 bearing the wordingq moi-lied on this all night: nowyou try it.

This card iss ointroduced as to partially obseurethe ehart'5, andafter, a brief period the hand and card are withdrawn, revealing the chart 'in Figure 11 Thev initial letters are printed in the row 7 in due time. The artist is supposed to havemade a mistake in his definition of a philanthropist, reverting to the stage of development in Figure 4. He finds the word loanshark as containing too many letters for the squares in the upper row 6, whereupon the hand 15 appears with an eraser 23 going through the motions of erasing the word. The word is made to disappear in consonance with the motions, after which the right Word appears. Y j
- Figures 19 and 20 are along the lines of Figure 18. In writing out the answer word in one of the rows of squares the artist is supposed to have erroneously spelled the word held (Fig. 20) by writing it Having discovered the error the eraser 23 again appears, and by going through the proper motion. erases the last letter of the word which is then correctly spelled as it appears in Figure 20. i
The reader must bear in mind that the working out of the puzzle is a continuous 'performancathat is to say the motion picture is continuous, properly advancing from one stage to the next, giving the audlence the impression of actually participating in the working out of across word puzzle.

While it is a common thing to work puzzles, particularly cross word puzzles, ,on paper; and with pencil it is be lieved to be entirely new to photograph the steps of working out such puzzle, as well as the various acts incidental thereto as herein'described and projecting the picture upon a screen forthe education and entertainment of an audience.
