IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR MAKING WIRE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.157,508, dated December 8, i874; applicatior filed October 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OSEPH F. GLIDDEN and PHINEAS W. VAUGHAN, of De Kalb, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in a Machine for Making Wire Fence; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the con struction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side view of our machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
Our invention is designed for facilitating the Work of applying wire barbs to fencewires; and it consists in the employment of reels, on which the fence-wire is wound, a pinion through which the fence-wire is drawn, and a segment for rotating the pinion, in combination with a twisting-lug on the face of the pinion, a guide-table, a keeper, and a gage, all constructed and so arranged that when a barbwire is adjusted in its place, and a stroke given to the toothed segment, the barb-wire will be wound several turns on the fence-wire, as will be hereinafter fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a reel, on which the wire is wound, and from which it is taken, carried over a grooved pulley, at, passed through shaft of a pinion, B, and wound upon a reel, 0. The reel A and the shaft of pulley a have their hearings in standards I) b, rising from a foundation, D, and the reel 0 has its hearings in standards 0 c, rising from the same foundation. -On the shaft of the reel (3 a ratchet-wheel, e, is keyed, which is rotated intermittently by means of a claw-pawl, f, on a long treadle, F, and which is prevented from being turned backward by a spring, 8. The tubular shaft of the pinion B has its bearing in a standard, G, rising from the foundation D between the two reels A 0,
and, with the teeth of this pinion B, engage the teeth on a vibrating segment, H, on the shaft of which a cranlcarm, I, is keyed. Two stops, 9 g, limit the length of strokes given to the segment H. J designates a standard, which carries a trough-shaped support, h. K designates a gage, against which one end of a barb-wire is held when first introduced into the machine to be wound upon the fencewire, andL designates a spring-keeper, the upper curved end of which presses against the face of the wheel B, between the support it and the gage K. A wire, 19, which is of the proper length, and which is pointed at both ends, is adjusted on the support It and against the gage K and face of the wheel B. When the barb-wire p is thus adjusted, it will lie over the flat side of a twisting-lug, t, on the face of the wheel B, as shown in Fig. 3. The segment H is then given one stroke, and the wheel B rotated, thus winding the barb-wire 19 several turns around the fence-wire W, as shown in Fig. 2. The fence wire is then wound upon the reel 0, and another barb-wire applied, and so on the work is continued, leavin g the barbs at regular intervals apart.
The spring-keeper prevents the barb-wires from slipping oft the twister t during the operation of applying them on the fence-wires.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the reels A 0, segment H, and a pinion, B, the latter having a lug, t, on its face, the support h, keeper L, and. gage K, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
