IMPROVEMENT IN JOURNAL-BEARINGS FOR CYLINDERS 0F CHROMATIC PRl NTING-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,507, dated December 8, 1874; application filed August 21, 1874.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
1 Be it known that I, ELIE GAIFFE, of the city of Paris, France, have invented a new and useful Improvement in J ournal-Bearings for Cylinders of Chromatic Printing-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a machine for printing in colors, in which the relation of my invention is shown to the other co-actin g parts. Fig. 2 is a vertical elevation, showing the adjustment of the engraved cylinder.
This invention relates to certain improvements in machines for printing in colors upon continuous paper; and consists in the adjustment of the engraved cylinders with reference to the presser-ro1ler for the purpose of securin g accurate registration of the diiferent colors.
In the drawings, Fig. 2, B represents an engraved printing cylinder revolving upon a journal, 0. A is the presser-roller, between which and the engraved cylinder the paper D is fed irom the roller T. F is a half box, in which the journal of the engraved cylinder moves, a half box only being necessary, as the cylinder bears on the other side against the presser-roller. Said half box Fis of a T shape, and its central extension, is pivoted at a to a bifurcated slide, G, in such a manner as to allow it a slight radial motion around the pivot a. H I are set-screws which pass through caps upon the vertical arms of the T-shaped box, and bind against the frame M containing the slide G. J is a horizontal set-screw, which passes through the frame, and presses against the slide G through an elastic cushion, X. By means of this arrangement the journal of the engraved cylinder is adjusted horizontally to the presser-roller through the set-screw J, and is adjusted vertically by the screws H I, the pivoted bearing of the journal preventing the change in its vertical adjustment from necessitating any change in its lateral adjustment, as the pressure of the set-screw J is always transmitted direct to the journal whether the latter be in a right line or otherwise, and the cushion X rendering the pressure of the cylinder always elastic and uniform.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the pivoted box F, cushion X, slide Gr, frame M, and set-screws H, I, and J, for the purpose of adjusting the en graved cylinder, substantially as described.
ELIE GAIFFE.
