The latter part of the operative stroke of the hand lover or equivalent is, in this case, utilized to move, through the intermediate means, a device, such as a lever or thrust block or bar, into position between the two plungers. The aforesaid intermediate means are preferably made yieldableand may or may not include means for positively Withdrawing the controlling device upon'the' reverse movement of the handjlever.

Referring to Figures 1 to 5 of the d -awings, the presser pad 1 is provided with a screwed shank or stem, adapted to screw into the lower end of a plunger 2 so as to be capal'ile of adjustment therein. and lock nut 3 is provided for locking said pad in its adjusted position. The plunger 2, which is slidablv mounted in the head 4 of the machine has pivotally connected thereto one end of a toggle joint the opposite end of which is fulcrumed upon the head Conveniently the toggle joint is formed by a plurality of links 5. A suitable spring, such for example as a compression spring (5. may be combined with the plunger 2 to normally hold the presser pad inoperative with the toggle joint 5 broken or bent. A hand le "er 7 is pivotally mounted on or in the head 4. and is operatively connected to the joint of the toggle preferably by a pair of links 8. Conven-- ientlv for this purpose said lever is fixed in a socket 9 or like member fulcrumed on a spindle 10 in the machine head and having a crank arm or link 11 formed integrally therewith to which the links 8 are pivotally connected so that in effect a second toggle joint. is formed. The socket 9 or like memalso has an arcuate web or cam 12 formed thereon for. a purpose hereinafter stated. In the normal position the hand lever T and consequently the pad 1 are held raised. as shown in Figure 1. with the pad so adjusted in the plunger 2 that when occi-ipying the pressing position the height between the machine bed 13 and the pad is slightly less than the length of the nails to be used. so that after the driving operation the ends of said nails should be visible on the face of the uppermost lift of the heel and therefore indicate that they have been properly driven. The heel lifts 14 are assembled in a work holder or mould 15 preferably of sectional character capable of expanding as the lifts are compressed therein. Conveniently I employ a work holder or mould of the character described in British specification No. 228,053. It will be understood that the number of the heel lifts varies according to the thickness of the latter and the height of the heels to be built, and that the presser pad is adjusted correspondingly. The arrangement is such that by pulling the lever 7 over. the presser pad is caused to descend until the toggle joint: 5 bccon'ies substantially straightened at which stage in the o iicration of the machine the hand lever and presser pad occupy the position shown in Figure 3, thereby compressing the heel lifts. This takes up the greater part; of the operative stroke of the hand. lever 7 but thereafter the latter may be moved further independently of the presser pad the pressure exerted by which'reniains substantially the same. By the employment of the arrangement just described the presser pad 1 is brought to a definite positionprearranged as previously mentioned during each operative stroke of the hand lever so that the pressure exerted during the building of: one heel is uniforn'i with that exerted d urine the building of another heel of the same size.
For throwing the nail driving mecha nism into operation there is provided, according to a coi'ivenient arrangement a frame movably mounted on or in the machine bed 13 which is carried on the machine stand 16. One end of the movable frame is adapted for engagement at the required time by the arcuate web or cam 12. while the opposite end is connected to a pivoted member which, when operated forms an operative connection between the nail driving plunger and the actuating means therefor. Spring means are provided for maintaining the frame and the pivoted member in the normal inoperative position. Conveniently the said frame comprises two side members or rods 17 provided with eyepieces 18 for connection by suitable intermediate means to the pivoted member, and a cross member 19, each end of which is connected to the adjacent upper end of the corresponding side member in any suitable manner. The side members 17 are slidably supported by guides or brackets 20 attached to the machine head 4 and-also slide through the machine bed 13. and compression springs 21 are associated with said members. The eyepieces 18 serve as stops to limit the movement of.,the frame under the influence of the springs by engaging the underside of the machine bed. The cross member 19 may be provided with a roller 22 or equivalent adapted to be engaged by the web or cam 12. The pivoted member may consist of an arm or lever 23 suitably fulcrumed on a bracket 24 attached to the bed 13 and fitted with a thrust block 25 which works in a .slot 26. The said thrust block is at the required time projected or thrust between the opposing ends of the nail driving plunger 27, which is normally stationary and held in its normal position by a spring or springs (not shown), and the actuating plunger 28 which is connected by links 29 to the eccentric St) on the machine shaft: 31 and normally reciprocates idly during rotation of said shaft, For this purpose the arm or lever 23 is connected to the movable frame by connections consisting of the cross bars 32 and 33 links 234 and a spring 35. Normally the movable frame and the arm or lever occupy the position shown in Figures 1 and 2, said frame being preferably so adjusted relatively to the hand lever 7 that at or near the end of the compressing movement of the latter the web or cam 12 makes contact with the roller 22 as shown in Figure 3. Continued operation of the hand lever causes the web or cam 12 to depress the movable frame which acts through the medium of the aforesaid connections to put the arm or lever 23 in position with its thrust block 25 between the opposing ends of the plungers 27 and 28.
The spring 35 serves to yieldingly con uect the arm or lever 23 to the cross bar 33 so that should the plunger 28 be rising as the thrust block 25 is moved into action, thereby arresting the movement of said block, the connection will yield under the pressure from the hand lever and thus a heavy impact and consequently damage to the mechanism will be avoided. Figure 4 illustrates the position assumed by the various parts as a result of the contingency just mentioned, i. e. the hand lever and movable frame are at the end of their operative movement while the block 25 is in contact with the rising plunger 28 and the spring 35 tensioned as a consequence. As the plunger 28 descends the arm or lever 23 will move under the influence of the spring to thrust the block into the gap between the plunger, so that the parts will then occupy the position shown in Figure 5, whereupon motion is transmitted from the reciprocating plunger to the stationary plunger through the block, and the nails are driven through the compressed heel lifts. Any other suitable connections may, however be provided for the aforesaid purpose. The operative movement of the arm or lever 23 is limited by the engagement of a stop 36 thereon with the plunger 28.
The extent of the movement of the hand lever 7 in operatingthe movable frame will be seen on comparing Figure 3 with either Figure 4 or 5. During the nail driving operation the hand lever is of-course held depressed by the operator but the toggle 5 and links 8 are so arranged that no jar is transmitted to the operator as a result of the action of the nail driving means.
The block 25 is positively withdrawn from action upon a reverse movement of the hand lever by the engagement of lugs 37 or the like on the links 34 with a pin 38 which serves to connect the spring 35 to the afore said arm or lever.
iilccording to the alternative form of the invention, shown in Figures 6 and T, thepivoted member comprises a pair of links 39 fulcrumed upon a nut 40 screwed on the lower end of the plunger 27, said links being joined by a bar 41 adapted when the pivoted member is in the operative position, to be eng d by the upper end of the plunger 28, which is suitably shaped to receive said bar. Normally the pivoted member is held inoperative by a spring anchored to a suitable part of the machine stand. For thrusting the pivoted member between the two plungers there is provided a bifurcated member fulcrumed between two lugs formed upon the bracket 24 one end of'said member being connected to the cross bar 32 associated with the aforesaid movable frame by means of a telescopic device comprising a rod 44, a slotted sleeve or socket 45, a pin and slot connection 52, 53, and a spring 46. The free end of the member 43 normally engages the links 39 so that when the movable frame is depressed, as hereinbefore 'described, the member 43 is swung on its pivot and thrusts said links and the bar.4l into the operative position as shown by the dot and dash lines, this movement being limited, by a projection 47 formed on the end of the plunger 28. The telescopic device provides a yielding connection between the pivoted member and the movable frame for the purpose hereinbefore mentioned. Upon the reverse movement of the frame the member 43 is positively restored to its normal position by means of the pin and slot connection 52, 53, while the pivoted member is withdrawn from action by the spring 42.
In anotherarrangement, shown in Figures 815010, the intermediate means include a v thrust block 4-8 slidably keyed on a vertical spindle 49 rotatably mounted in suitable bearings so as to be capable of turning to thrust the block between the ends of the plungers 27 and 28. The spindle 49 is con nected to the cross bar 82 of the movable frame by means of a lever 50 and a telescopic device similar to that justdescribed i. e. comprising a rod 44, slotted sleeve or socket- 45, pin and slot connection 52, 53, and spring 46, with the exception that'a ball joint 51 of any suitable form is employed to connect the rod 44 to the lever 50. In the normal position of the parts the thrust block 48 is held out of alignment with the plungers so that when the hand lever 7 is operated and the movable frame thereby depressed rotation is impartedto the vertical spindle through the medium of the telescopic device and the lever 50 whereby the block 48 is thrust between the plungers, that is to say, the block is moved from the position shown by full lines to that shown by the dot and n sh lines in Figure 1t). Since the block lidabl v heyed on the spindle it is moved up and down thereon as a result of the reciprocation of the plunger-s. As in the pre' EiHIS arrangement the telescopic device ms a yielding connection between the irnwablc :lraine and the block for thepurpose minitioucd. The block is positively \xitl'idrrnvn to its inoperative position upon the reverse movement of the movable frame by 'cas-iin of the engagement of a pin 52 in the rod with the end of the slot 53 in the sleeve or socket 45.
Instead of using the section or expanding mould or work holder the heel lifts may be carried in any other suitable holder during compressing and nailing. A slotted guide ill, see Figures 1 to 5, the position of which can be adjusted by a screw or equivalent in a bracket attached to the machine bed 13,-may be'providcd for engagement with shoulders or abutments (not shown), on the mould or work holder so as to position the latter correctly,relatively to the compressing-and the nail driving means.
The machine bed is preferably inclined, as shown in Figures 1 to 5,".so as to ensure. that the nails will incline tcvards the back of the heel during the nailing operation, thus minimizing the risk of the nails being driven towards the breast of the heel and consequently projecting therethrough when the heel front is subsequently breasted. The liililSiSl'C driven from a die 57 by drivers 58 .hich are fixed in a head on the plunger 27 in the usual manner'and are of different lengths to compensate for the inclination of the-machine bed. The driving shaft 31 is driven through the medium of a pulley 59 or in any other convenient-mannerand may have a pair of flywheels 6O thereon.
The details of construction may be varied without departing from the scope of the invention.
Claims:
1. A heel building machine of the type herein referred to,-having, in combination a h nd lever by whichcompression of the heel s is effected, automatically acting nail driving mechanism, adevice controlling said mechanism and intermediate means for'actuation by said hand lever to render said controlling device active.
2. A heel building machine of the type herein referred to having in combination, a hand lever by which compression of the heel lifts is" effected, automatically acting nail driving mechanism, a device controlling said mechanism, and intermediate means adapted for actuation by said hand lever to rcnder said controlling-device active, the arrangement being such that the heel lifts are compressed and the'nail driving mechanism is' ren'dered operativeby one and the samestroke of the hand lever.
3. A heel building machine of the'typc herein referred to, having in con'ibination a plunger and resser pad for compressing the heel lift, a hand lever, a toggle arrangement connecting said lover and plunger, nail driving mechanism, and intermediate connections between said lever and mechanism for putting the latter into operation upon movement of the lever taking place subsequently to compression of the lifts.
ll. A heel building machine of the type herein referred to, having in combination, a. device for compressing the heel lifts, a hand lever or equivalent, a toggle arrangement whereby said device may be actuated by the lever, nail driving mechanism, and intermediate means between said mechanism and the lever, said toggle arrangement being of such a character that the hand lever when actuated moves the lift compressing device to a definitecom-pressing position during the fie st part of its operative stroke, and during the remainder-of said stroke actuates the intermediate means'to putthe nail' driving mechanism into operation without further operation of the lift compressing device.
'5. A heel building machine of the type herein referredto, having in combination. a plunger, a presser pad carried by said plunger, a hand lever, toggle connections between said'hand lever and plunger whereby the latter may, upon actuation of the hand lever, be moved to press the pad upon the heel lifts to compress the latter,'nail driving mechanism, a device controlling said mechanism, and intermediate means between. said device and the hand lever whereby said device is operable'by the hand lever forputting the nail driving 1necha nis'm into operation.
G. A heel building machine of the type herein referred to having, in combination a. device'for compressing the heel lifts, a'hand lever, toggle connections between saidhand lever and compressing device wherebvthe latter may be actuated by said lever nail driving mechanism, a device controlling said mechanism, and intermediate ineansfor actuating said controlling'device by the hand lever, said lever, toggle connections and intermediate nieans'b'eing arranged so that the hand lever has first a movement to operate the compressing'device without actuating the compressing device.
7. A heel building machine of the type herein referred to having, in combination, a device for compressing the heel lifts, a hand lever, toggle connections between said hand lever and compressing device whereby the the hand lever has first a movement to oper-' ate the compressing device without actuating the intermediate means, and then a further movement to actuate the intermediate means without actuating the compressing device, said further movement occurring as a continuation of the first movement and in the same direction. 8. A heel building machine of the type herein referred to, having, in combination, a device for compressing the heel lifts, a hand lever, toggle connections, between said hand lever and compressing device whereb the latter may be actuated by said lever, nail driving mechanism, a device controlling said mechanism, and intermediate means for actuating said controlling device by the hand lever, said lever, toggle connections and intermediate means being arranged so that the hand lever has first a movement to operate the compressing device and move it to a definite compressing position without actuating the intermediate means, and then a furtl'ier movement to actuate the intermediate means during which the toggle connections hold the compressing device locked in the compressing position, said further movement occurring as a continuationof and in the same direction as the first move-' 9. A heelbuilding machine of the type herein referred to, having in combination, a device for compressing the heel lifts, a hand lever, toggle connections, between said hand lever and compressing device whereby the latter may be actuated by said lever, nail driving mechanism which includes a normally stationary part and a reciprocating part, a device adapted to be interposed between said parts whereby motion is transmitted from the reciprocating part to the normally stationary part, and intermediate means between said device and the hand lever whereby said device may be moved by the hand lever.
10. A heel building machine of the type herein referred to, having, in combination, a device for compressing the heel lifts a hand lever, toggle connections between said hand lever and compressing device whereby the latter may be actuated by said lever, nail driving mechanism which includes :1 normally stationary part and a reciprocating part, a device adapted to be interposed between said parts whereby motion is transmitted from the reciprocating part to the normally stationary part, and yieldable intermediate means between said device and the hand lever whereby said device may be moved by the hand lever.
11. A heel building machine of the type herein referred to, having, in combination, a hand lever or equivalent by which c0m prcssion of the heel lifts is effected, a nail driving plunger, a reciprocating plunger, a
device adapted to be interposed bet-ween said plungers whereby one transmits motion to the other, and intermediate means between said device and the hand lever whereby said device may be actuated by the lever.
12. A heel building machine of the type herein referred to, having, in combination, a hand lever or equivalent by which compression of the heel lifts is effected, a normally stationary nail driving plunger, a
second plunger, means toreciprocate said second plunger so that normally it recipro cates idly, a transmitting member movable into and out of position betweenthe two plungers, and means operable by the hand lever for moving said member.
13. A heel building machine of the type herein referred to, having, in combination, a hand lever or equivalent by which compression of the heel lifts is effected, a normally stationary nail vdriving plunger, a second plunger, means to reciprocate said second plunger so that normally it reciprocates idly, a transmitting member movable into and out of position between the two plungers and also movable with said plungers during the nail driving stroke thereof, and means operable by the hand lever for moving the member to the transmitting position between the plungers.
14.. A. heel building machine of the type herein. referred to, having in combination manually operable means for compressing the heel lifts, a normally stationary nail driving plunger, a second plunger, means to reciprocate said second plunger so that normally it 'reciprocates idly a transmitting member adapted to be interposed between the plungers wliereby motion is transmitted from one to the other, a carrier for said transmitting member on which the latter is slid able, and intermediate means by which said carrier may be moved by the manually operable means to interpose the transmitting n'iember between the plungers.
15. A heel building .machine of the type herein referred to, having, in combination, manually operable means for compressing the heel lifts, a normally stationary nail driving plunger, a second plunger, means to reciprocate said second plunger so that normally it reciprocates idly, a transmitting member movably carried by one of said plungers and adapted to be interposed between them whereby motion is transmitted from one to the other, and intermediate means by which said member may be moved by. the manually operable means to an operative position between the plungers.
16. A heel building machine of the type herein referred to, having, in combination, a device for compressingthe heel lifts, a hand lever for actuating said device, a nail driving plunger ctuating means therefor, a transmitting member adapted to form an operative connection between said nail driving plunger and the actuating means therefor, and a spring controlled frame adapted to beacted'upon by the hand lever after its movement for compressing the heel lifts, said frame when acted upon putting the transmitting member into operation 20. A heel building machine of the type herein referred to, having in combination, a heel lift compressing device, a hand lever for operating same, a nail driving plunger, a POWGT-(ilIlVGIl plunger normally reciprocated idly, a pivoted carrier, a thrust block slidable on said carrier, a spring controlled frame, connections between said frame and carrier, and a cam on the hand lever for moving said frame to cause the carrier to interpo'se the thrust block between the plungers.
21. A heel building machine of the type herein referred to, having, in combination, a heel conu n'essing device, a hand lever for operating said device, a nail driving plunger, a power actuated plunger normally reciprocated idly,- a pivoted carrier, a
thrust block slidable on said carrier, a
spring controlled frame, yieldable connections between said frame and the carrier, and a cam on the handlever for moving said frame to cause the carrier to in erpose the thrust-block between the pl'ungers.
