To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN RorinrnK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county,
and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scooters, of which the following is a specification.
v This invention relates to scooters and more particularly to scooters and the like used as toys or play things in which the cars are propelled by the action of the foot upon the platform.
Heretofore, in such scooters, the platform was stationary and was supported on a frame, to which frame, the wheels and also the propelling mechanism was-suitably s'ecured, so that the users could utilize one foot upon the platform and the other foot upon the pedal of the propelling mechanism.
The invention consists in providing a movable platform, which, when moved, will operate the propelling mechanism and by the use of this invention, the user may stand form. The invention further comprises the combination of parts whereby a very pleasing, yieldable and resilient operation is obtained.
The invention will be more fully hereinafter described and an embodiment thereof shown in the drawings and the same finally claimed in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 3 is a side view, showing an embodiment of my invention, arranged in the scooter or the like, Figure 2 is'a plan view thereof, and Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail, View of a driving clutch mechanism, and in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughthe several views.
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figure 1, the well known wheels 10 are held in position by the frame 11, arranged in two parts, the forward part having a handle 12 and the rearward part preferably having a seat support 13. The frame ll'has between its two parts, the supporteither one foot'or both feet upon the platlng means for a platform, consisting of each other, but in opposite arrangement to each other One end 19 of each spring presses against the lower surface of the platform 16 and the other end 20 of each spring presses against the frame 11. In the embodiment shown, the end 20 (see Figure 1) is so bent as to pass from the inner part of the frame 11 to the outer part thereof and the body portion of the end 20 of the spring thereby acts to be attached to the frame 11. Normally the springs 17 and 18 have a tendency to press outwardly and thereby mainlink 21 is pivotally connected with the frame 11, and the link 22 is pivotally connected with the lower part of the platform 16 and these links 21 and 22 are pivotally connected with each other at their free ends'by means of a pin 23. Such a buckle joint is provided at each end of the platform 16. One of the links either 21 or 22 is provided with a pin 24 to act upon the other link, so that the action of these links and this pin 24 is such as to limit the extending movement of this buckle joint.
Thus, while the springs have thetendency to move the platform upwardly at either side of the central portion of the platform, the buckle joints have the effect of limiting the movement'of this upward movement of the platform.
To one end of the platform 16 is secured a rod 25 to which the segment of a gear or a rack 26 is secured. The teeth of this gear or rack mesh \vith'the gear 2'? on the rear axle 28. The gear 2Tis connected with a coaster mechanism as is well known in the art and this mechanism is so arranged that only the movement of the gear in one direction will bring about the positive interlocking of the gear and the shaft whereby the wheel on the shaft will be driven, but the opposite movement of the gear is a free movement, having no positive effectv upon the shaft. Such mechanisms are well known in the art and the installation of such a mechanism enables the operation of the device herein described to be carried out. Thus, on the downward mov mentof the segmentalgear or rack 26, due to the downward movement of one end of the platform 16, the meshing of the teeth of the member 26, with the teeth of the gear 27, will bring about the downward driving of the shaft 28 and the wheel 10 and hence the scooter device. The upward movement of the member 26 permits, on the other hand, a free movement' of'the gear 27 and henre has no forwardpropelling action, but permits the member 26 to return again to its initialpositionifreely without in any mannerobstructing tlie propelling movement; of the scooter device, Thus, by the mechanism described, it will be seen that any operator or user pressing' upon the platform '16 in either downward orupwaiddirection in respect to the central part of the platform 16 will compress one spring and extend the other spring andbring about the downward movement of the gear member 26 so as to propel the scooter device forwardly, release of I pressure at one end'of'the plat-form permits thespr-ing to-bring the platform toward its initial position, the movement of the platform in this direction being limited by the buckle joint, and if such movement corresponds: with the free movement of the toaster brake, then the gear member 26 is enabled to be brought into its initial positionpreparatory to its propelling force.
Referring to Figure 3, I have shown a formof'coaster-mechanism suitable for driving'the'wheels 10 from the gears-27. In this constructioin a ratchet wheel 30 may be securedto the wheel '10 and a pawl 31 to the gear 27. This pawl is urged inward into engagement with the ratehetElO by means of a spring 32 having one end pivoted: at 38 with the gear 27 and a stop 34 on the gear holds it in place It will be. observed that when the gear isturned'in the direction of the arrow, wheel 10 will be propelled forward, also'that-the wheel will be permitted to coast when the gear is stationary or turned in the reverse direction.
The device is very simple in its construction, very pleasing and agreeable in its use on account of its resilient and yieldable characteristics and by virtue thereof and the combination. of the propelling means,v a scooter may be provided which will be readily operated by the users. t is the eombinationv of the platform with the spring and buckle joints, that enables the propelling mechanism to=propel a scooter device of this kindand the combination of such parts is the subject-matter. of this invention. 1' have described an embodiment of my invention and various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing fromthespiritcf the invention as defined iii-the appended. claims I claim':
1. A scooter comprising in combination front and rear wheels with means for steering the front wheel and propelling means for the rear wheel, frame structures in which the said wheels are mounted, a platform between the wheels, pivot connections between said platform and said frames for connecting them, and a seat support carried by the rear wheel frame structure.
2. A scooter comprising in combination front and rear wheels with means for steering the front wheel, frame members in which said wheels are rotatably supported, seat supporting means carried by the rear frame member, tilting platform pivotally connected with each of the frame members, coaster mechanism in the mounting of said rear wheel, and means on the tiltingplatform adapted to-cooperate with said coaster mechanism for,- propelling the scooter in a forward direction;
3. A scooter comprising in combination frame members in which front and rear wheels are supported, steering mechanism for the front wheel, propelling means for the rear wheel, a seat supporti'ngmember, a tilting platform having pivotal connections with the frame members, means for normally urging said plat-formupward from the frame members, and means-on the rear end of the platform foroperating the propolling means for the rear wheel.
4. A scooter comprising in combination, front and rear frame structures ini-which front and rear supporting wheelsare mounted, steering mechanism for the front wheel, a driving coaster for the rear wheel including a driving gear, a seat supporting member on the rear frame, a platform for connecting the front and rear frame-structures, a pivotal. connection for the end of: each frame with: said platform, means for normally yieldingly urging said platform in anupward directienabove the frame, and a gear rack carried 'by the rear end of said 'plat-formiadapted to engage the driving; gear on said driving coaster;
5. A scooter comprising in combination front and rear wreels-withmeans for steering the front wheel and propelling means for the rear wheel, frame structures in which the said wheels are mountechai platform between the wheels, pivot connections between said platform and said frames for connecting them, springs between said frames and said platform adapted to yieldingly press the platform, upwardly with respect to said frame members, connections between the platform and: said frame members for limiting said upward movement, and means on said platform for operating said propelling means 6. In combination with asupporting body and a frame member pivoted thereto, apair of pivoted links an 'ularly connected together and with said body and frame memher, a stop on one of said links against which the other abuts for limiting the opening movement of the links with respect to each other, and a spring for normally separating the ends of said links to normally hold them in the limited extended position.
7. A scooter comprising wheels, a frame, a platform pivotally mounted on the frame, springs interposed between the platform and frame, in front of and to the rear of the pivotal connection therewith, and means connecting the platform and one of the wheels for propelling the same.
8 A scooter comprising wheels, a frame and a platform pivotally mounted on the frame, springs one at either side of the pivotal connectlon between the platform and frame, link members between the platform and frame, one set at either side of the pivotal connection, means limiting the movement of the link members, a mechanism for propelling one of the wheels, and means connected with said mechanism and with the platform, for operating the mechanism on the pivotal movement of theplatform.
