STEAEN FOR GAfiOLTl'NE.
Application filed June 7,
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. Cesar, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloucester, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers for Gasoline, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to strainers, and has special reference to such strainers as are used on gasoline lines and the like. It has for its object the production of an improved device of this class which will not clog, which may be used ineither a horizontal or a vertical position, and which may be easily taken apart and the strainers removed for cleansing or other purposes. Other objects will appear from the detailed description and claims hereinafter.
I attain my objects by mounting a plurality of cup shaped strainers of different meshes, in a cage supported in a casing which it divides into approximately equal chambers, one for intake of liquid and sediment and the other for clean gasoline. The coarsest mesh is on the intake side, and means are provided for removing sediment and for blowing or washing out the entire casing and strainers when desired without taking the casing apart.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the device complete.
Figure 2 is an end view.
Figure 3 is a section thereof on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure i is a side View showing the cage and strainers removed from the casing.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a metal casing comprising a tubular body fitted with end caps 2 and 3, having central tapped openings closed by screw plugs 2 and 3, and lateral nipples 2 and 3 for connection to discharge, and inlet'pipes or tubing, respectively. In the side walls of the body are lugs 4; projecting inwardly to receive and hold the cage which carries the strainers 7 and S. The cage is in two parts, one part comprising a flanged ring or body 5 with arms 5 supporting a lower ring 5" for protecting the lower strainer; and the other part comprising a clamping ring 6 threaded into the flanged cage ring 5, and
1922. Serial No. 566,637.
carrying a bent up cross bar 6 which serves to protect the upper strainer and also for engagement of fingers or a wrench to turn the clamping ring 6.
The two strainers 7 and 8 are cup shaped with flanged edges, the flanges lying as shown upon the flange of the body ring 5, and being clamped thereto by ring 6. Interposed spring washers may be employed if desired. The lower strainer 8 is of coarse mesh and the upper strainer 7 is of very fine mesh screening.
in operation the liquid to be strained, as gasoline, passes in through nipple 3 as indicated by the arrow in Figure 3, thence upwardly through the coarse strainer 8 and the fine mesh strainer 7, into the upper chamber and so out through nipple 2 This strainercannot become clogged, any matter that would ordinarily have that action bein stopped at the loweror coarse mesh member 8, and the gasoline in the upper chamber being perfectly void of any dirt or sediment; The device as a whole may be connected completely to a gasoline line, either pipe or copper tubing, in a very short time, and will operate with its axis either horizontal or vertical. In either case gravity assists in keeping the screen 8 clear of sediment, which may be drawn off through the lower opening in casing 1 by removing plug 3 or may be blown out thoroughly by removing both plugs.
I am aware that various changes and modifications may be made in this device without departing from the spirit of my invention. For example, the strainers may be held in the cage by a groove in the inner face of thering 6 and a spring ring or washer therein. Various other changes will. occur to those skilled in the art, and I wish it distinctly understood that I contemplate all such changes as fall fairly within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1; A strainer for liquid supply lines comprising a cylindrical casing or body, bearing lugs therein projecting inwardly, an upper and a lower end cap fitted to the body, each having a centraltapped opening closed by a removable plug, and each having a lateral nipple for connection to discharge and to inlet pipe or tubing, respectively, and a cage centrally disposed in said body and supported on said lugs, said cage enclosing a pair of strainers and beingi in two parts,'one'part comprising afianged ring or body with arms supporting a lower ring for protecting the lower strainer,.and the other part compris- 5 ing a clamping :ring threaded into the flanged ring of the'first part so as to clamp the strainers between them, and carrying a bent up cross bar serving to protect the upper strainer and also to turn the clamping ring.
"2. A strainer as claimed inclaim 1 in which the strain-i-ngelements within the cage are in the Y form of flanged cups with their flanged. edges placed together: and clamped between the two parts or the cage.
'3. A strainer-as claimed in claim 1 in whichthe-strainingelements within the cage are in 'the f orm o'l fianged oups with their flanged: edges placed together. :and clamped betWeen the two partsof the cage-and in which the said twocup shaped straining elements are of difierentamesh;the-coarser mesh zbeing enithe inlet side.
4. A str iilGlffOlI liquid supply lines com- 2 prising a hollow cylindrical casing or body,
21 nIllQIJQI'JPIIdJEF lower end! closure for said body eachhavingaa lateralnnipple for connection towa' discharge: and to. an; inlet pipe respectively, and :.a'-self -contained munit strainer centrally: supported in said body and iLCODl Pl'lS/lll the following -1nstrumen-- tailities: Aitwogpart cage with means for connecting s the two 1' parts together, -:and a pair 1 of strainingelements" in I the form of opposite flanged cups with their flanged edges placed: together and clamped" between the two parts. ofsaidcage,- said straining elements being of differentmesh, the coarser mesh being placed on the inlet side of the -body, and means carried by-the cage surround ng andprotectmg said elements independently of the casing.
A strainer for liquid supply lines comprising a hollow cylindrical body divided intermediate of: its ends, one portion being removable from the other, an inlet and an outlet openin in said portions respectively and a self contained s;rai-ners fitted within the end of. one portion ofthe cylinder and comprising the following instrumentalities gral arch projecting above and beyond each of said strainersand rigdily connected at its ends toopposi te' points on the corresponding ring, whereby a complete cage isiiormed" to protect the, strainers, and *at the same time the projecting, integral. arches servenas me-' chanical means for manipulating the. rings and the entire strainerstructnre regarded .as a unit.
