Description
Patented Feb. 1,6, 1926.
, UNISTVEDOSTATES" Y. BENJAMIN PORTER, OF FULLKEBTON, NORTH DAKOTA.
LIGHT DEFLECTOR.
' Application flied July 1i, 1925. serial No. 42,956.
lens` for the headlamps` of -motor vehicles and the like, the general objectof the invention being to provide a lens which will prevent blinding of persons on the roadfby the glare from the headlamps of the vehicle on which the lens are vused while, at. the
same time, using practically all the light for illuminating the road ahead of the vehicle.
This invention is Van improvement over that forming the subject matter of an application filed by me on January 31, 1925, Serial No. 6,106.
The present invention has an inwardly extending rib, or ribs, which is rendered opaque by a reflecting surface on its outer '25 face, the rib being so placed that it will prevent theI escape ofy those rays of light which would act to blind the driver of an vapproaching' car or other persons, while causing these rays to pass through. other portions of the lens for` illuminating the road without blinding persons in front of the vehicle. l
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction Vand Vin the combination yand arrangement ofthe sev` eral parts, to be hereinafter fully described,I illustrated in the accompanying drawings f and specifically pointed out in the appended claim. I
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view through a v headlamp showing my improved lens in use. Figure 2 is a face view of one form of the improved lens. y y
Figure 8 is a view of another form.v Figure 4L is a view of a further form.
Figure 5 is a view of still another form. f
- tion that the advantages and novel features Figure v6 is a transverse sectional view through the rib carrying part of a lens.
As shown in these views, I form thelens 1v with an inwardly extending rib 2 of V- 55 vshape in cross section with its outer faces provided with a coating 3 of reflecting substance (like mirrors). Thus the rib carrying part of t-he lens is rendered opaque,- so that no rays of light can pass through, 6G
vbut thev rays striking therib'will be deflected so that they will pass through another portion of the lens. The lens is shown in connection with a conventional form of headlamp A in Figure 1 and the rib is so located G5 that it will prevent ythose rays of light from the lamp yfrom escaping which wouldv producefa glarerand blind .the drivers of vehicles approaching the vehicle equippedwith the'k invention; The rib might be ar- 70 ranged in various positionsin relation to the center of the lens according to the kind of lamp upon which it is used. VFor instance, Figure 2 shows the lens provided with. a straight horizontal rib extending across the horizontal center of the lens. Figure 3 shows an inverted V-shaped rib v2 on the lens, while Figure 5 shows an arc-shaped rib 2 on the lens. Figure 4 shows three radiatingribs 2X and a central disk 4 from which `the ribs radiate, this disk being of red or other color and acting to filter the rays passing through it. The top rib is madershorter than the other ribs. The rib, or ribs, may be arranged in a different mannerfrom the illustrations, to' suit the purpose in view.
As will be seen, the limproved lens will provide a dark spot at the center of the light thrown olf by the lamp into which one may look without being blinded, while 'the rays ofv light whichare prevented from vpassing through this' dark spot are de iiected so that they. will pass through .another part of the lens to help illuminate the road or its vicinity so that practically all.
the light is made use of, while preventing blinding of persons approaching the light. Itis thought lfrom the foregoing descrip of myfinvention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be vunderstood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several part-s7 provided that such changes fall Withn the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A lens for a headlamp having a number of inwardly extending ribs thereon arranged centrally of the lens, each rib being of V shape in cross section with its outer faces Coated With reflective material for preventing, rays of light from passing through the rib and reflecting to other parts of the lens above and below the central portion thereof.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature.
BENJAMIN PORTER.
