END GATE.
. Application tiled Ju1y`22, 1,925. Serial No. 45,296.
To all trl-72.071@ it may concern-A.'
lie it known that I, lVAI/rnn I-I. I-LinmsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at l-lighxnore, in the county of Hyde and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful In'iprovements in End Gates, of which the following is a specification.
lilly invention relates to end gates and more particularly to scoop-boards for vehicle bodies.
It is an object of the invention to provide an end gate for vehicle bodies which when opened will be converted into a scoop-board,V
vention will be apparent during 'the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1, is a perspective view of my improved end gate, and,
Fig. 2, is a top view of the same with the gates open.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5. denotes the body of a vehicle comprising a bed 6 and side walls 7 and 8.
The invention consists of a pair of end gates 9 and 10, preferably constructed of sheet metal, each hingedly connected to the ends of the side walls and arranged to fold in overlapping relation to close the rear end of the body. The bottom edges of the gates have inwardly extending lateral extensions 11 and 12, so when the gates are swung outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, the extensions 11 and 12 will form an extension for the wagon bed, or scoop board.
Each of the gates is hinged at the top and bottom, at its side, to the end of the body sidesf7 and S, by the strap hinge members 13 and 14:, connected bythe pintle pinl;v`v q.:
edges of the gates adjacentxthefsides bear y. against the inside of the:l longitudinal Iianges 16, bent at right angles from the facing strips 17 secured to the vertical uprights 18 attached to the side walls at the ends. A second upright 19V is attached to the side walls in spaced relation to the uprights l18, forming a vertical groove 20 on opposite sides of the body, adapted to receive a slide board, not shown, if desired. The inner edge of the facing strips 17 are oifset, as at 2l, being seated in the grooves 20 and serve as a lining for the same. VThus, it is seen that the hinges are relieved from the pressure on the end gates bythe flanges 16 of the facing strips, against which the edges of the gates abut.
The end gates are locked in a closed position by the locking lever 22 having one end -pivotally connected to one of the gates, as at 23, and its opposite end folded uponitself to form a. loop 24:. A keeper 25 is secured to the other end gate having its upper end olfset, as at 26, and split to form arms 27 and 28. The arm 28 is bent outwardly from the arm 27 and serves as a guard for the locking lever when the lever is swung downwardly to bring the loop 2li into engagement with the arm 27. A bar 29 is pivotally connected at one end to the lever 22,intermedi* ate its ends, as at 30, and depends therefrom.l its lower end engaging` a recess 31 in the bed 6, of the body when the lever is in a loclred position, providing additional locking means for locking the end gates.
In use, it will be observed that when the end gates are swung open the lateral exten sions along their lower edges will provide an extension for the bed 6, which serves as a scoop board. l
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described isto be taken as al preferred example of the saine and that certain changes' in the shape, size and arrangement of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the snbjoined claims. l
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the characterdescribed, the combination with a vehicle body, of a pair of end gates hingedly connectedto the sides of said body, and extensions projecting of said gates adapted to provide an extension for the body when the gates are swung outwardly. y
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a` vehicle body, of a pair of end gates hingedly connected to the sides of said body having inwardly directed. lateral extensions along their lower edges, adapted to provide an extension for the lbody when the gates are swung open.
'3. In a ,device of the character described, the combination with al vehicle body, of a pair of uprights secured to the inner faces of the sides of the body at their ends, facing strips secured to said uprights having longitudinal lianges, a pair offend gates hingedly connected to the sides of said body khaving their inner edges bearingagainst the ianges of said facing strips, inwardly extending lateral extensions formed integral with the lower edges of said gates, and means for locking said gates. y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
IVALTER H. HARRISON.
