Be it known that I, VVYLIE G. lViLsolv, a Y set of the King of Great Britain, and --es1'lent of Jersey City, in the county of 'udscn and State of New Jersey, have inbalance, thus avoiding dangers incident to the opening of such a valve under conditions where 'ater is flowing under a powerful head or pressure.
in United States Letters Patent issued to this applicant entitled .Valve control, dated February 19, 1918, No. 1,256,759, this applicant disclosed the importance of providing means whereby the valve interposed in the blow-elf pipe should be opened in approximate balance. It is deemed unnecessary to do more than to refer to that patent for the purpose of stating the problem and its solution, so far as the apparatus therein disclosed was capable of overcoming the difliculties involved.
it will be noted from an examination of said patent that there are two valves interposed in the blow-off pipe in tandem, one being nearer the boiler and the other farther therefrom. The apparatus provides means by which the valve farther from the boiler is maintained closed during the operation of opening the valve nearer the boiler, the theory being that, under normal conditions, the space between the valves would be constantly maintained full of water; and consequently the valve nearer the boiler would in like manner he maintained continuously in balance. This system operates with entire satisfaction when the valves are being constantly operated, but it transpires that the valve farther from the boiler, being subject to the rapid flow of water, possibly carrying gritty substances in suspension, is affected by such flow in a manner to produce what is known as wire-drawing, or other forms of abrasion; and consequently in the course of time said valve farther from the boiler is found in a condition where it canthe boiler may be opened in substantial it is opened.

1 is a steam boiler, and 2 a blow-oil pipe. 3 is a valve interposed in said blow-off pipe, this valve beingdesignated as the one nearer the boiler; whilel is another valve interposed in said blow-off pipe, designated as the valve farther from the boiler. 5 represents, without further description, the apparatus fully described in said patent No. 1,256,759. 6 is a section of pipe interposed in the blow-off pipe 2 between said valves. 7 is apipe communicating between the boiler and said section 6 of the blow-off pipe 2, and 8 is a valve interposed in said pipe 7.
When it is desired to blow-oil the boiler, the valve 8 is first opened, thus filling the chamber between said valves 3 and 4 with steam under pressure. (Even though the valve farther from the boiler may be in a leaky condition, the supply of steam is intended to be sufiicient to compensate for such leakage and maintain the valve nearer the boiler in balance, as stated.) While in this application the tandem valve structure and means of operation disclosed in said patent are illustrated, it is not necessary for the purpose of this invention that that particular apparatus should be employed. The valves 3 and 4 may be independently and manually operated in association with the steam pressure, as stated. There are, however advantages in employing the tandem valve cooperative mechanism illustrated and 'described in said patent, and it is for this reason that the structure shown in said patent is illustrated as a preferred form of construction.
Claims: 7
1. In a boiler blow-oil system, a blow-off pipe leading from the boiler with two valves interposed in said pipe, one being nearer the boiler and the other farther removed therefrom, and means to operate said valves, means to introduce steam pressure from the boiler to the b-low-ofi pipe between said valves, and means to control saidflow of steam pressure, so that when said valves are closed and steam pressure is introduced into said pipe between said valves, the valve nearer the boiler may be opened in balance between the water inthe boiler and such steam pressure.
2. In a boiler blow-off system, the combination with a boiler having a blow-off pipe leading therefrom, of two valves included in the blow-ofi' pipe in tandem, valve actuating mechanism connecting the sealing members of said valves for operation in predetermined sequence, and a valved conduit lead ing from the steam chamber of the boilerinto the space between the sealing members of said valves, whereby steam pressure from the boiler may be admitted into said space for the purpose of producing a substantially balanced condition of pressures on both sides of the valve nearer the boiler.
3. In a boiler blow-off system, a blow-off pipe leading from the boiler, with two valves interposed in said pipe, one being adjacent the boiler and the other farther removed therefrom, and means for controlling the operation of said valves so that the valve farther from the boiler cannot be opened until the valve nearer the boiler is first opened, and the valve nearer the boiler cannot be closed until the valve farther from the boiler is first closed, and means to introduce steam pressure from the boiler to the boiler blow-off pipe between said valves, and means to control said steam pressure, so that when said valves are closed and steam is introduced into said blow-oft pipe between said valves, the valve nearer the boiler may be opened in balance between the water in the boiler and such steam pressure.
