L. S. GUNDERMAN MECHANICAL TOY Filed March 25, 1925 Will/[555155 M mmvm. Q I, 5 aizm Patented Feb. 9, 1926 UNITED STATES 1,572,356 PATENT OFFICE.-
LESTER S. GUNDERMAN, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA MECHANICAL 'IOY.
Application filed March 25, 1925. Serial No. 18,111.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Lns'rnr. S. Gunman- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in an automatic toy having a tipping track of a loop the loop type. V
The object of this invention being to provide a mechanical toy in which a miniature vehicle is raised from-a lower level to a higher level from which it runs by force of gravity downward, through a double loop to the opposite end of the track, from whence it is again elevated to gravitate back to its initial position.
In the accompanying drawing;
Fig. 1 is a top plan View of the improved toy.
Fig. 2 is a section on line X-X Fig. 1 and shows the parts in one position.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the end of the track showing the openings for retaining the rolling object.
Fig 4f is a section YY Fig. 1 of the track showing the separable joints in the track.
Referring to the drawing 7 designates the supporting base. Secured to the base are two uprights 8, and supported in the two uprights is a transverse shaft 9. Pivoted on this shaft by means of cars on the under side thereof is a frame 11 secured to the track section 12. Spaced apart on the track is a pair of loops 13, the track and loops being an integral part thereof. The ends of the loop track are provided with a pair of parallel slots 14 into which tongues 15 of the loose tracks 16 fit in such a manner as to form firm detachable joints. The entire track comprises three sections 16, 16 and 12 joined together and supported about mid way between its end on frame 11 which is pivotally connected to the uprights 8. This track is made in section to minimize the space for packing the toy.
Near the outer end of the removable track sections are a pair of parallel slots 17 for retaining the rolling object 18 until the predetermined height is reached for the rolling object to gravitate therefrom. object is shown here as a miniature car which may be of any conventional type.
The rolling The spring motor 22 forming apart of this toy, may be of any approved design.
The operation of the toy may now be de-1 scribed assuming the rolling object to be in a position as shown in Fig. 2, the object is about to leave the slot 17 and descend the abrupt incline port-ion of the track, then around the first loop then descending the middle incline track section, the object gathers momentum enough to carry it around the second loop and to the opposite end of the track where it is retained untilv the track end is elevated by the rotation of the motor when the object will gravitate in like manner back to the starting end of the track to again be elevated, repeating the operation during the running of the toy.
I claim 1. A toy comprising a tilting track having reverse inclined surfaces, the said track being pivotally supported therebeneath between the ends thereof and so shaped as to have two loops positioned one on each side of the pivotal support, and an object adapted to roll on said track by gravity.
2. A toy comprising a tilting track pivotally supported therebeneath and arranged to alternately elevate the end thereof, a pair of loops positioned between the ends of the said track the said loops being an integral of the track, a. pair of parallel slots at each end of the track, and an object adapted to travel in the said tracks by gravity and be received in said slots.
3. A toy comprising a tilting track pivotally supported therebeneath and arranged toalternately elevate the ends thereof, the said track including a pair of loops each spaced equal distance from the said pivot support, the ends of said track having upwardly inclined surfaces, and means for giving a rolling object added momentum for passing through the loop to the opposite end of the said track.
4. A toy comprising a base, a pair of up rights mounted on the said base, a tilting track pivotally mounted therebeneath on the line with each other. I
said uprights, a pair of loops each spaced equal distance from the said pivot support, means for positively tilting the track to alternately elevate the ends anda-n object adapted to travel on the track by gravity, the ends of the said track being so arranged that the object will be elevated from a lower level to a higher level, to gravitate to the opposite end of the track.
5. A toy comprising a tilting track pivotally supported therebeneath and arranged to alternately elevate the ends thereof, the said track including a pair of loopseach spaced equal distance from the said pivot support the outer ends of the loops having a pair of parallel slots spaced back from the ends thereof, the outer sections of the track having a pair of parallel. lugs bent downward below; the surface of the track and extendinto the slots in the loop sections, the end portions of; the lugsresting underneath the track to assist in holding said sections in 6. A toy comprising a tilting track pivotally supported therebeneath the said track including a, pair of loops each spaced an equal distance from the pivot support the end of track having upward reverse inclined surfaces, and arranged to alternately elevate the ends; thereof, and power driven means for continuously rocking the track during the operation of the toy, and a rolling object adapted to travel on the track by grav-i ity and be transferred from one end of the track to the opposite end by the motion of; said tracks.
'2'. A toy comprising a, reverse inclined track pivotally supported therebeneath, a pair of loops each equally spaced from the pivot support the said loops being an integral part of the track, a driving arm carried on the said track and extending downward from the said pivot support, the lower end of the said arm carrying a pivot bearing,'a connecting bar pivotally mounted on the said arm the opposite end of the connecting bar being pivoted to means for driving the same, said arm and connecting bar including pivot bearings and driving means, being arranged to alternately elevate the ends of the track and an object adapted to gravitate from one end of the track to the opposite end by the elevating of said track.
8. A toy comprising a tilting track pivotally supported therebeneath, a pair of loops each spaced an equal distance from the pivot support, the said loops being an integral of the said track, the outer ends-of the loop section having :a pair of parallel slots spaced back from the endsthereof, the outer end sections of the track having a pair of parallel lugs bent downward below the surface of the track and extending into the slots in the loop section the end portions of the lugs resting underneath the track, the outer ends of the removable sections being provided with apair of parallel slots for retaining the rolling object until elevated by the tilting of the track, the rolling object being transferred from one end ofthe track to the other by gravity.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature LESTER S. GUNDERMAN.
