UNIT ED LOUIS J. HERTLINY or weaver-vealNewton) :PROIJ corrosion aLuMmiiM ramme ream Applicatioiiifiled April 23, i923." sen-arm; 634,180.
To all whom it may cm'zc era:
" 'Be it vknown that I, LoUisJ. l-feirrmiv, a
' citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Voodhaven, county of Queens, and State of New York, l' aveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in the; Production-of nomical results are attained than heretofore,
substantially the 'manner hereinafter fully'set forth, and claimedspecifically:
"In the accompanying drawings-I 'illus trate a practical embodiment of the essential features of my invention,although I donot limit myself to the identical method or.
sequence of steps in the process offproduction shown by Way of exemplification,since modifications, may be resorted to in minor according to requirements details with equivalent results, and without departing'from the spirit and intent of' my invention in this respect.
lVith'this understanding, and it being further understood that the dii'nensions 'indicated are not arbitrary, and'may be varied Fig. 1, represents a" face view of the artists original sketch;
Fig. 2, the original sketch as marked off into subdivisional sections Fig. 3, a half-tone print of Fig. 2 on plate of miniature size;
Fig. 4, an impression on glass from the hand corrected miniature plate shown in Fig. 8;
Fig. 5, the sections of the poster segregated and enlarged from miniatpre negatives of the plates ready for printing from; and
Fig. 6, the resultant sheet poster printed sectionally from the enlarged plate shown in Fig. 5; and positioned on poster board or surface in complete and correct co-relation. In carrying out my invention in its simpler form, as applied to the production of a one color aluminum printing plate of relatively small size for use alone, an orlginal copy 1 or design of minimum size is pre-' pared, and when approved, a photog "aphic negative is obtained thereof, from which negative a positive half tone print is made on a-sensitrzed alumlnum plate 2 through the medium of a suitable screen, ina manner,
wellkno'wn in" the'a-rt ofphotography. This half tone aluminuni key plate is re-touched by hand and then etched, tlie etched key plate being then ink-rolled, and. an impression there-of taken on glass, yielding a positive from Whiclra negative is prepared, which is used in -an enlarging camera for the production on an aluminum plate ofsuitable area," of a positive reproduction ofthe desireddeg ree of enlargement as compared with theoriginal miniature of} design first I" referred to? The fullsize aluminum print- 111' p1ats'1sthen etched-and prepared for the .press in'the'usual ways- Where. moregth'an ne @0101 i to d i'ntlic-r production of the design, the process the same up to and including the half tone production-on the alum num key plate for retouch ng, with this"exception, that this'half tone aluminum' keyf plate is reprodu'ced for each color to be used, so as to afford meansof correction-for each color plateusep'arately, when the process proceeds, as'above exemplified, for each color plate.
lVhen co-related plural "sectional alu minum printing plates are essential, owing to the relatively large size of the poster to belprovid'ed:for, i. e., 'wh'erethe inclusion of thefdesignon oneplat'e' would be impractcal "oi-undesirable, as in the case of-posters scrilived subdivisions of the original design. Thus, in this method of n'eparmg the full 'intcn'de'dtocover large areas, the subdi 'v1sion"iseflected 1n'the enlarging camera, where separate plates are; used for pres zed sectional printing plates, the original miniature design is marked to indicate the lines of subdivision, such as 1 1 1 1. 1 and the. appropriate portions of the separate plates (including color plates, if any) 0 tained from said retouched halftone aluminum key plate, are segregated and exposed individually in the enlarging camera to produce the desired enlarged sectional printing plates for the unitary design,- ea'h resultant plate being etched and prepared for the press as heretofore.
My method of production of aluminum printing plates enables me to effect retouching'and correction of the work on a small scale, as compared with the old art of retouching and correcting each full sized plate directly'aml individually prior toetc ting, etc. V
This means greater accuracy and uniformity in tone in the final production, as well as economy in time and labor, especially in color work, and sectional poster work. In other words, my process affords the great practical advantage of being able to prove the plates and make sure that they are absolutely correct before In'oceeding with the enlargement. Furthermore, the lengthy and tediors finishing of the enlarged plate by artist hand work, etc., is eliminated.
\Vhat claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
a 11. The method herein set forth of producing aluminum printing plates, consisting in preparing an original design in n'iiniature, making a photographic negative thereof, printing a half tone positive therefrom on a sensitized aluminum plate, retouching by hand the aluminum key plate thus attained, etching said aluminum key plate, ink-rolling said key plate and imposing an impression thereof on glass, using said positive print on glass for the making of a negative and using said negative in an enlarging apparatus to transfer the design to a sensitized aluminum plate which is then developed, ct: lied, and preparatory for use in the press, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
i 2. The method herein set forth of producing aluminum printing plates for color work, consisting in preparingan original design in miniature, making a photographic negative thereof, printing a half tone positive therefrom on a sensitized aluminum plate, retouching by hand the aluminum key plate thus attained, etching said aluto transfer the design to sensitized aluminum plates which arethen developed and etched preparatory for use in the printing press, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.-
3. The method herein set forth of producing sectional poster aluminum printing plates, consisting in preparing an original design in miniature, indicating thereon the requisite sectional subdivisions thereof, male ing a photographic negative of the niinia ture design thus prepared, printing a halftone positive from said negative on a sensitized aluminum plate, retouching by hand the aluminum key plate thus attained, etching said aluminum key plate, ink-rolling said key plate and imposing an innaression thereof on glass, using said positive print on glass for the making of negatives, and using said negatives in an enlarging apparatus to transfer the design to sensitized sectional aluminum printing plates which are then developed, etched, and prepared for use in the press, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
4. The method herein set forth of producing sectional color posteraluminum printing plates, consisting in preparing an original design in miniature, indicating thereon the requisite sectional subdivisions thereof, making a photographic negative of the miniaturedesign thus prepared, printing a halftone positive from said negative on a sensitized aluminum plate, retouching by hand the aluminum key plate thus attained, etching said aluminum key plate, ink-rolling said key plate and imposing an impres sion thereof on glass, using said positive print on glassfor the making of negatives, one for each color included in the design, and using said negatives in an enlarging apparatus to transfer the design to sectional sensitized aluminum printing plates which are then developed, etched, and prepared for use in the press, substantially in the manneand for the purpose described.
