IMPROVEMENT IN BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,184, dated November 24, 1874; application tiled October 20, 1874.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH ROBERT LAMB, of Jacksonville, Morgan county,iState of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers for Water-Heaters, and other purposes, of which the following i a specification:
In this improvement the boiler is constructed of a number of parallel longitudinal vertical sections, each consisting of a top and bottom longitudinal pipe, slightly inclined from the horizontal, and the said pipes being connected by a number of vertical pipes of cruciform cross-section. The sections are connected together by transverse pipes at bottom and top, as shown.

A is the wall or casing surrounding the boiler. This case may be of brick, metal, or other suitable material. B is the furnacedoor, and O the chimney. These pipes end at front in sockets d, for 'the ends ofthe water-supply (or return) pipes, whose ends are inserted in the sockets and secured bya rustjoint. vvertical pipes extending upward from the pipe H and forming the water-communication between the pipe H and a pipe, J, parallel therewith, and extending from the back to the front of the case, where is an enlargement or socket, j, by which connection is made with a short pipe, J f, which is one of a number extending backwardly from the transverse pipeK. The joint j, like those aforesaid, is a rust-joint.
Thus, the boiler consists of a number of vertical parallel sections, G H I J, connected together and having Water communication through transverse pipes at bottom in the rear, and at top in front.
All the pipes except those, I, may be round, but the pipes I are cruciform in section, (as shown in Fig. 3,) having longitudinal extensions or hollow ribs fi, and transverse extensions or hollow ribs il.
The pipes I are so arranged that the transverse extensions or ribs il, in one section, are opposite to the spaces 'i2 between the pipes in the contiguous sections, this arrangement allowing the heated currents to have free upward movement and to heat eft'ectually the whole surface of the pipes I.
VWhen using the boiler for water-heater, for heating buildings, for baths, &c., the water flows out through the pipe K to the radiators, and returns through the pipes D D.
When using as a steam-boiler, the pipe K may be made of sufcient diameter to constitute a steam-drum, or may communicate with a steam-drum over it and also, the rear ends of the pipes J may communicate with the pipe E by verticalcirculation pipes extending down through the body of the case A, or outside the case, so as to allow the Water to have a downward tlow through these pipes.

I claim- As an improvement iii a boiler, the combination of sections formed of longitudinal pipes H and J, and vertical pipes I, cruciform in transverse section, and the transverse connecting-pipes, all substantially as set forth.
