IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FQRROLLING IRON STRAPS.

Be it known that I, JENs JENSEN, of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in a Machine for Rolling Iron Straps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference markedthereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a longitudinal section of my machine. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views, hereinafter referred to.
My invention has relation to means for making boxstraps for wagons; and it consists in the employment, for this purpose, of a rolling-die, which is recessed to give the proper form to the straps, in combination with a smooth or plain roller, operated bymeans hereinafter explained.
Before describing my machine for rolling the boxstraps referred to above, I will explain the form of such straps, reference being had to Figs. 3, 4, and 5 of the annexed drawlogs.
The main portion A of the strap presents one flat sideand one convex side, and it is perforated at several points for the reception of screws for securing it in its place. The extreme end of the strap, which I shall term a shank, B, is cylindrical, and is screw-threaded for receiving a nut. Between this round end and the portion A the strap presents a flat portion, 0, which may be two inches, more or less, in length. This strap, with the exception of the threads on the rounded portion or shank B, I produce by means of the machine which I shall now describe. A designates the frame of the machine, which consists of two standards rising from bases and suitably connected together. B designates the dieroller, and G designates the feed and pressing roller. Both of these rollers have their end bearings in journal-boxes applied in the upper ends of said standards, and both rollers are geared together by means of twin-wheels G G. The die-roller 13 receives rotation in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1 from a spur-wheel, E, on a driving-shaft, E, acting through the medium of a large spurwheel, 0 The driving-shaft E carries on one end a belt-wheel, D, and on the other end a fly or balance wheel, D. The die-roller B has a recess, a, formed in it, which terminates at one end in an abrupt shoulder, 12. This recess is of such a size that it will receive the round bar or blank, out of which the strap in question is formed, without allowing the roller 0 to act on it. The rear portion of the recess a is tapered and increased in breadth and diminished in depth, as indicated by the letter a. This recess 0 forms the flat portion 0 of the strap, and terminates in a groove, (1, of suitable length, of about the same depth and of the same width as the groove or recess 0.
This latter groove, d, is concave transversely,
and produces the portion designated in Fig. 3 by the letter A. The two rollers, B 0 impinge on each other, and the roller 0, which is smooth and cylindrical, leaves the upper surfaces of the portions A G flat.
It will be seen from the above description that at each rotation of the two rollers I produce a box-strap ready for punching and threading.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, substantially as herein described, of the pressure-roller and (lieroller B, provided with the recesses a c d and shoulder b, as set forth.
