To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO Mnnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baton Rouge, in the parish of East Baton Rouge and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brake-Beam Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brake beam hangers and has for one of its objects the provision of novel mecl-ianis'm for suspending the brake beams of railway rolling stock, Characterized by eing detachably interlocked with a support on the truck frame, bolster, column casting, or other suitable part of the motive gear, in such manner that while readily applied or removed, it is proof against inadvertent detachment.
A further object of the invention is the construction of a brake beam hanger and an interlocking support therefor in which the use of pins, bolts, or other separate coupling means is avoided, the interlocking structure being inherently qualified to permit the desired swing and play of the brake beam in its normal course of operation, whlle at the same time preventing the accidental or unintentionaldetachment or disengagement of the brake beam and parts carried thereby when the brake beam is in its normal operative position. i
Other objects of the invention will ap near as the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof proceeds.

Referring noW in detail to the several figures, the side frame of the truck is represented by the numeral 1, 2 being the usual spring plank supported by said frame and carrying the spring 3 ,upon which 1s mounted the bolster a. The brake beam is shown :at 5 and supports the brake head 6 and tioned being of usual and typical construetion and forming in themselves no essential part of the present invention.
The brake beam hanger support, in the present instance, consists of a lug or bracket 8 which is here shown as being cast or otherwise fixedly secured to the side frame of the truck. It is to be understood, however, that said lug or bracket may be secured to or form a part of any suitable portion of the running gear such as the bolster l or column casting 5. The lug or bracket 8, which will hereinafter be referred to simply a a bracket is formed in its lower part with a slot 9 of a width sufficient to accommodate the thickness of stock of the brake beam hanger. The slot 9 terminates at one end with the end wall 10 which constitutes a stop for limiting the swing of the brake beam hanger, and consequently that of the brake beam, in one direction. The end wall 11 of the slot 9 is not ordinarily called upon to act as a stop, for the engagement of the brake shoe with the wheel with which it is associated affords a stop for the swing of the brake beam in the other direction.
The slot 9 debouches into the intermediate portion of a T-shaped opening 12 which extends transversely through the bracket 8, and has the head portion thereof arranged vertically.
The brake beam hanger preferably consists of a closed loop 13 adapted to be pivotally secured to the brake head in the usual manner, said loop being formed with a stem let terminating in a cross bar 15. Said cross bar is-of such length that it may be introduced into the slot 9 and pushed up wardly into the limb 16 of the T-shaped opening, turned cross-wise of said slot and then seated in the groove 17 formed by the head of the T-shaped opening. hen it is in this position, the brake beam hanger can partake of all of the ordinary movements of the brake beam incident to its normal operation but is positively interlocked with the bracket 8 so that it cannot inadvertently or unintentionally be displaced.
This construction obviates the use of pins, bolts or other separate coupling means which are apt to become worn or broken and therefore lost with a consequent dropping of the brake beam and risk of derailment of the rolling stock. In addition it is simple in construction and may be readily manipulative without disturbing any of the associated parts of the structure of the motive gear, when it is desired to remove or replace it.
\Vhile I have herein shown and described what I consider to be an eminently and practical form 01: the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is susceptible oi such changes in the arrangement or configuration of parts as are permissible under the terms of the appended claim.

In a device of the class described, a truck, a brake beam, a brake beam hanger for suspending said brake beam and a bracket for supporting said hanger, said bracket being fixed relative to said truck being provided with an opening extending therethrough laterally with respect to said truck and with a slot formed between the sides thereof and extending to said opening longitudinally with respect to said truck, said brake beam hanger being formed with a cross bar longer than the width of said slot and insertable thereinto, said cross bar being turn-able within said opening, the lower wall of the latter being formed with lateral depressions on each side of said slot affording a seat for said cross bar when the latter is turned to a position angularly with respect to initial position of insertion, said hanger being normally prevented from returning to its normal position of insertion by parts of the structure associated with said truck.
