To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADOLPH Sorrnnnn, a subject of the King of Rumania, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Shade Vent Rings, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to lamp shades, more particularly to the vent ring on the top of the shade and has for its object to provide a ring of simple and durable construction which may be easily applied and which will present a pleasing appearance.

This object, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a lamp shade having my invention applied thereto,

Referring to the drawings, 1 is a lamp shade having a top 2 formed with a neck 3 to provide a vent 4. An outer ring 5 having curved flared ends 6 and 7, and preferably made of strip metal, is placed around the outside of the neck. The height of the outer ring is preferably made so that the top of the ring will extend above the neck. An inner ring 8 has a curved flared top end 9 and a straight flared bottom end 10 and is preferably made of strip metal. The inner ring is positioned on the inside of the neck so that the straight flared end will abut the under side of the top and the curved flared end will engage the curved flared end of the outer ring and thus clamp itself to the outer ring and hold it in place.

The method for applying my improved vent ring to a lamp shade consists of, plac' ing the outer ring, which may be made of tubing but preferably of strip metal with its ends soldered or brazed together as shown at 11, on the outside of the neck. The inner ring which may be made of tubing but preferably strip metal is placed on the inside of the neck. The lamp shade is then placed over a tapered pin 12 so that the pin 05 will engage the inner ring. A presser plate 13 is placed over the pin to engage the top of the outer ring. By pressing or forcing the vent ring downwardly on the tapered pin, the inner ring will be spread so that its curved flared top will engage the curved flared top of the outer ring thereby clamping and holding the outer ring in position against the top of the lamp shade. The tapered pin is then removed and the ends of the strip which forms the inner ring are soldered or brazed as shown at 14. When using inner rings 15 and outer rings 16 made of tubing as shown in Figure 5, similar steps of application may be followed. The tubing is preferably made of a metal having an appreciable degree of plasticity to permit spreading of the same. By con structing a vent ring as above described, the vent ring may be cheaply manufactured, and firmly clamped to the top and also present a pleasing appearance.

While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a lamp shade having a vent opening in its top, an outer ring mounted around the opening on the outer side of the shade, and an inner ring mounted within the opening and having curved flared ends adapted to be forced against the upper 95 end of the outer ring and the inner side of the shade to clamp the shade between the rings.

2. In combination with a lamp shade having a vent opening in its top, an outer ring 100 mounted around the opening on the outer side of the shade and having a curved flared end, and an inner ring mounted within the opening and having curved flared ends adapted to he forced against the upper end 105 of the outer ring and the inner side of the shade to clamp the shade between the rings.

3.
