Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. LUT'roN, a citizen of the United States and resident of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Pattern Mechanism foi' Looms, of which the following is a specification.
This Yinvention relates to a pattern mechanism for looms and more particularly to a supplemental mechanism adapted to be combined with a shuttle box pattern chain mechanism and a multiplier chain mechanism of well known construction and operation', which supplemental mechanism will present certain novel features of construction, form and arrangement, whereby' themovement of the shuttle boxes with respect to eachother may be accurately timed to suit various requirements and for producing various patterns of weaves.
A further object-is to provide a mechanism of the above character which will-be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and which may be readily applied to looms now in common use.
I have only shown yin the drawings detached portions of a shuttle boxpattern chainV mechanism, and a multiplierV chain mechanism of well known construction and,
operation, both of which mechanisms are particularly shown and described in United rtates Letters VPatent No. 917,088 dated April 6, 1909, with my improvements combined therewith.

The shuttle box pattern chain mechanism comprises a cylinder 19 fast on a sleeve 20, which is mounted to rotate on the shaft 7. The cylinder 19 is provided with a box pattern chain 21, made up of links 22, short bars 28 and long bars 24. One side of this chain carries mutilated rolls 25 arranged to engage a shoe25* carried by a lever 26 pvoted on a shaft 27 mounted in the frame 1.l

I Will now describe my improvements combined with the parts above referred to.
A supplemental shuttle box pattern chain mechanism is mounted in suitable bearings in the frame and .comprises a cylinder 29 provided with a pattern chain made up of links 30, 31, bars 32, rollers 33 and tubes 34. The cylinder 29 is fast on a` shaft `35 journaled in the trame, Which shaft `receives its motion from the shalt 7 through the spur gear 8 iixed thereon and a spur gear 36 fast on the shaft The chain is also supported on an idler 37 loosely mounted on a shaft 38, the ends of which shaft are secured in brackets 39, 40 lcarried by the frame 1. The shaft 38 may be adjusted vertically in slots 41, 42 in the Abrackets 39, 40, thereby allowing a vertical adjustment for the chain. Extending over this chain is a series of levers 43 pivotally supported at one end on a shaft -44 carried by the trame 1, Which levers, inthe revolution of the chain, are adapted to be enga-ged bythe rollers 33 and lifted thereby. Each of the levers 43 is connected to its vibrating lever 4, immediately below, by a link 45, so that as the lever is raised by the roller passing thereunder, the vibrating lever will rbc actuated and its respective shuttle brougl-it into .action .in the usua'l manner. The levers are maintained in position and arranged .to oscillate in a guide 46 carried by the 'frame 1.
Means have also been provided -lfor moving the supplemental shuttle box pattern chain laterally to bring the rollers or tubes, inthe same lateral plane, under the levers 43, which means comprises a cradle 47 provided with vertically disposed side walls 48. This cradle .isse'cured to a bar 49, which is arranged to be reciprocated in the bracket 39 and a bracket 50 carried vby the trame 1. Motion is imparted to the bar 49 by means of a bell crank lever 51 pivoted at 52 in a bracket 53, one end of Which the bell crank lever 51 is connected to an ear 54 uprising through an oscillatable lever 55. One end of this lever 55 is tulcrumed on the shaft 27 and the other end -provided With a shoe 56 which is adapted to be'engaged by the long bars 24 ot' the shuttle box pattern chain 21. A helically coiled retraction spring 57 is attached at one end to a pin 587 which pin forms the tulcrum of the bar 49 and bell crank lever 51, and its other end to the bracket 39, so that the cradle and chain Will be normally held in one position by the spring and moved to the other position by the coact-ion of the long' bars 24 with the shoe 56 and its adjacent mechanism.
ln order that the supplemental chain may be rotated in a direct path, I provide each bar 32 with a pair ojt guides, in the form of Washers 59, 60. The Washers 59 are 4arranged to enter and recede 'from an annular groove 61 formed lin a sleeve 62 loosely mounted on the shaft 35. The chain is 'further kept in alinement by reason of the links 31 being disposed obliquely with respect 'to each other, While the links 30 are located in parallelism with each other.
Thus it will be seen that by the arrangement lof the rollers and tubes on the vbars of the supplemental shuttle box pattern chain and the lateral movement of the chain, diterent combinations ot' rollers and tubes may be brought` uncer the levers 43, thereby materially increasing the. range of operation to which the levers and :their adjacent mechanism may be placed, as Well as reducing the length ,of chainV required to produce the .desired pattern.
lt Will therefore be :understood from the foregoing, `that each of the levers 43 will be actuated by one or the otherset of rollers 33 and :tubes arranged Vin alinement on the supplemental shuttle box pattern vchain as the chain is moved on its cylinder 29.
The operation of my improvement in connection with the shuttle yboit pattern chain and multiplier pattern chain mechanisms, Wil-l be readily lunderstood by those skilled :in the art, and brieiiy is as follows Then the pinWheel is Vin engagement With the star-Wheel of the -boX pattern chain 21, this pattern chain will be rotated `until one of the mutilated rolls 25 on the chain 21 comes under the shoe 25:?, the movement of which lifts the lever 26. The raising of this lever 2,6, actuates the bell crank lever 26*, through the link 28, so as to disengage the pinwheel and star-Wheel of the boX pattern chain 21. moved into mesh Withthe star-Wheel 124, thereby setting the' multiplier pattern chain 123 in motion.l During the revolution of the multiplier pattern chain 123, the box pattern chain 21` may remain stationary-until the next roll 129 on the multiplier pattern chain comes 'under and actuates the indicator lever 130. The movement of the indicator lever 130 will rock the bell crank lever 132, through the. link 133 and thereby actuate the mechanism to move the pinwheel 125 away from the star-Wheel 124, placing Lthe multiplier pattern chain 123 at rest. Simultaneously with the movement of the pinwheel 125, the star-Wheel of the box pattern chain 21 Was engaged by its coacting pinwheell thereby setting the box pattern chain 21 in motion.
During the revolution of the shuttle box pattern chain 21 the extended or long barsy 24 `will be brought into engagement With the shoe 56 of the lever 55 which will be lifted and cause the bell crank lever 51 to be rocked, Which in turn Will actuate the bar 49 carrying the cradle 47. In the movement of this cradle 47 ythe upwardly extending side Walls 48 will be Vcaused to en age the pins 32vof the chain and move the c am laterally, thereby causing the'set rollers and tubes, operating the levers 43, asshown 1n Fig. 3, to pass therefrom and the adjacent set of rollers and tubes to move under the levers and vactuate the shuttles throu h the links 45, vibratorsV 4 and'their a )acent mechanism.
It Will be understood that the rollers and tubes are so arrangedwith respect to the long bars 24 that the movement of the chain Will always take place when the rollers and tubes under the levers 43 are equal in height or paired.
As the long bar- 24 passes from its engagement with the shoe 56 the spring 57 Will exert a pull upon the pin 58 and return the bar 49 yWith its cradle and chain to their normal position and since there is no pin to engage the shoe 56, the bell crank lever 51 and rocking lever 55 Will be returned to their position as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive.
The advantages of myv improvements will be readily perceived by those skilled in the art, and may be easily applied to'box pattern chain and multiplier chain mechanisms of ordinary and Well known construction.
I desire it to be understood that various changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence, I do not intend to be limited to the details herein shown and described, except as they .may be included in the claims.
What I claim is:-
1. In a pattern mechanism for looms, the
combination with a shuttle box pattern chain, af' multiplier pattern chain, mechanism coacting with said chains to control the movement of the chains, and vibrating levers, of a supplemental shuttle box pattern chain, means connected to the vibrating'levers and actuated by the supplemental shuttle box pattern chain for controllin the movement of the vibrating levers, an mechanism for moving said last named chain laterally to present different surfaces of the chain t0 said means for actuating the vibrating levers. Y

In a pattern mechanism for looms, the combination WithV a shuttle box pattern chain, a multiplier pattern chain, mechanism `coacting ywith said chains to control the movement of the chains, and vibrating levers, of a supplemental shuttle box pattern chain, means connected to the vibrating levers and actuated by the supplemental shuttle box pattern chain for controlling the movement of the vibrating levers, and mechanism for moving said last named chain laterally in one direction to present 'different surfaces of the chain to said means for actuating the vibrating levers.

In a pattern mechanism for looms, the combination with a shuttle box pattern chain, a multiplier pattern chain, mechanism coacting with said chains to control the movement of the chains, and vvibrating levers, of a supplemental shuttle box pattern chain, means connected to the vibrating levers and actuated by the supplemental shuttle box pattern chain forv controlling the movement of the vibrating levers, mechanism for movingsaid last named chain laterally in one direction, and a spring actuated means for moving the chain in the other direction to present different surfaces of the chain to said means for actuating the vibrating levers.
4; In a pattern mechanism for looms, the combination With a shuttle box pattern chain, a multiplier pattern chain, mechanism coacting with said chains to control the movement of the chains, and vibrating levers, of a supplemental lshuttle box pattern chain,'means connected to the vibrating levers and actuated by the supplemental shuttle box pattern chain for controlling the movement of the vibrating levers, and mechanism for moving said last named chain laterally to present different surfaces of the chain to said means for actuating the vibrating levers, said mechanism being actuated by the shuttle box pattern' chain.

In a pattern mechanism for looms, the combination with a shuttle box pattern chain, amultiplier patternchain, mechanism coacting with ksaid chains to control the movement of the chains, andlvibrating levers, of a supplemental shuttle box pattern chain, means connected to the vibrating levers and actuated by the supplemental shuttle box pattern chain for controlling the movement of the vibrating levers, and mechanism for moving' said last named cham laterally in one `direction to present different surfaces or" the chain to said means for actuating the vibrating levers, said mechanism being actuated by the shuttle box pattern chain.

In a pattern .mechanism for looms, the combination with a shuttle box pattern chain, a multiplier pattern chain, mechanism coacting with said chains to control the movement of the chains, and vibrating levers, of a supplemental shuttle box pattern chain, .means connected to the vibrating levers and actuated by the supplemental shuttle box pattern chain `for controlling the movement of the vibrating levers, and mechanism for moving said last named chain laterally in one direction to present dilierent surfaces of the 'chain to said means for actuating the vibrating levers, said mechanism being actuated by the shuttle box pattern chain, and a spring actuated means'for moving fthe chain in the other direction.v

In a pattern mechanism for looms, the combination with a shuttle box pattern chain, a multiplier pattern chain, mechanism coacting with said chains to control the movement of said chains, and vibrating levers, of a supplemental shuttle box pattern chain, rocking levers coacting therevWith and connected to the vibrating levers, and mechanism for moving said last named chain laterally.

In a pattern mechanism for looms, the combination with a shuttle box pattern chain, a multiplier pattern chain, mechanism coacting with said chains to control the movement of the chains, and vibrating levers, of a supplemental shuttle box pattern chain, rocking levers coacting therewith and connected to the vibrating levers, and mechanism for moving said last named chain laterally in one direction.

In a pattern mechanism 'for looms, the combination With a shuttle box pattern chain, a multiplier pattern chain, mechanism Acoacting with said chains to control the movement of the chains, and vibrating levers, of a supplemental shuttle box pattern chain, rocking levers coacting therewith and connected to the vibrating levers, mechanism for moving said last named chain laterally in one direction, and a spring actuated means for moving the chain in the other direction.

In a pattern mechanism for looms, the combination with a shuttle box pattern chain, a multiplier pattern chain, mechanism coacting with said chains to control the movementof the chains, and vibrating levers, of a supplemental shuttle box pattern chain, rocking levers coacting there- With and connected to the vibrating levers, and mechanism for moving said last named chain laterally, ,said mechanism actuated by the shuttle box pattern chain.

In a pattern mechanism for looms, the combination with a shuttle box pattern chain, a multiplier pattern chain, mechanism coacting With said chains to control the movement of the chains, and vibrating levers, of a supplemental shuttle box pattern chain, rocking levers coacting therewith and connected to the vibrating levers, and mechanism for moving said last named chain laterally in one direction, said mechanism actuated by the shuttle box pattern chain. In a pattern mechanism for looms, the combination with a shuttle box pattern chain, a multiplier pattern chain, mechanism coacting With said chains to control the movement of the chains, and vibrating levers, of a supplemental shuttle box pattern chain, means connected to the vibrating levers and actuated by the supplemental shuttle box pattern chain for controlling' the movement of the vibrating levers, mechanism for moving said last named chain, said mechanism comprising a rocking lever adapted to be engaged by the shuttle box pattern chain, a reciprocating bar, a bell crank lever connecting said bar and rocking lever, and means on the bar engaging the chain for moving it laterally.

In a pattern mechanism for looms, the combination with a shuttle box pattern chain, a multiplier pattern chain, mechanism coacting with said chains to 'control the movement of the chains, and vibrating levers, of a supplemental shuttle box pattern chain, means connected to the vibrating levers and actuated by the supplemental shuttle box pattern chain for controlling the movement of the vibrating levers, mechanism for moving said last named chain, said mechanism comprising a rocking lever adapted to be engaged by the shuttle box pattern chain, a reciprocating bar, a bell crank lever connecting said bar and rocking lever, means on the bar engaging the chain for moving it laterally in one direction, and a spring actuated means for moving the chain in the other direction and a spring actuated `means Jfor 15. In a pattern mechanism for looms, the combination with a shuttle box pattern chain, a multiplier pattern chain, mechanism coacting with said chains to control the movement of the chains, and vibrating levers, of a supplemental shuttle box pattern chain, means connected to the vibrating levers and actuated by the supplemental shuttle box pattern chain for controlling the movement of the vibrating levers, mechanism for moving said last named chain, said mechanism comprising a rocking lever adapted to be engaged by the shuttle box pattern chain, a reciprocating bar, a bell crank lever connecting said bar and rocking lever, and a cradle on the bar engaging thc chain for moving it laterally.

In a pattern mechanism for looms, the combination with a shuttle box pattern chain, a multiplier pattern chain, mechanism coacting with said chains to control the movement of the chains, and vibrating levers, of a supplemental shuttle box pattern chain, means connected to the vibrating levers and actuated by the supplemental shuttle box pattern chain for controlling the movement of the vibrating levers, mechanism for moving said last named chain, said mechanism comprising a rocking lever adapted to be engaged by the shuttle box pattern chain, a reciprocating bar, a bell crank lever connecting said bar and rocking lever, a cradle on the bar engaging the chain for moving it laterally in one direction, and a spring actuated means for moving the chain in the other direction.
