siding at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new und useful Improvements in Print-infr Apparatus.
This invention relates to printing apparatas and more particularly to the variety adapted for print/ing checks, drafts, certilirates and the like, for example with a monetary value, the chief object ot' theinvention lieiig to provide a simple' and practical mau chine et this variety conveniently adapted vfor printingT an amount either spelled out in words or expressed in igures, as the nature of the work may require, or for printing an amount partly in words and partly in gures as at times desirable for reducing the length of a. legend. To these and other ends the invention resides in certaiivimprovements and combinations oi parts all as will he hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims atv the end of the specification.

l The invention is embodied in the present instance in an apparatus of the general type disclosed in the patent to Charles H. Sampson, #1315,642, dated September 9, 1919 for printing machines, in which a type drum having a plurality of type forms is rotated to bring the forms selectively to a common printing position for successively printing words of different lengths forming an expression of a monetary value, together with platen means and a variable feeding mechanism for feeding the work in connection with each impression a distance corresponding to the length of the word printed, as Well understood in the art. The present apparatus is diii'erent however in that it comprises a plurality of type drums ,selectively4 employed and each having a plurality of type forms requiring' successive feeding movements of the Work of uniform length for. the same drum but of different lengths for the diierent drums respectively. More specilically, one drum in the present instance is provided with types for printing` figures and the other with types for printing Words the latter being arranged, however, at an inclination to the drum axisand the printing line arid blocked out. to a uniform length, as shown in Figs. 14 and l5 so that the Words thus .require only a uniform feeding of the .Work which is different, however, from that required by the figures. The machine therefore. comprises a feeding mechanism automatically adjusted by the selection of one of the type drums for feeding the work to correspond With the arrangement of the type on theselected drum. A I" Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown at 20, Fig. 4 acasing base portion having on its top a printing bed 21. Mounted on the base isan upper casing` portion 22 spaced from the base at the front of the machine to provide a Work receiving slot 23. Rotatablyy supported adjacent its end in the side walls of the upper casing portion 22 over the work slot is ,a shaft 24 having fixed on one end thereof outside the casing an actuating knob 25. Fixed on the vshaft within the casing is a sleeve comprising two oppositely disposed eccentric bearing portions 26 and 27 on which are rotatably mounted type drums 28 and 29 respectively. These drums are of substantially the same diameter but of different lengths and the longer drum 28 has spaced circumferentially thereon a plurality ofseparate type forms 30 for printing lettered words adapted to be combined for eX- pressing any monetary value within certain limits. It is to be noted that .these words are arranged at an inclination to the drum axis and the printing line and blocked out to a uniform length as shown so that while the words themselves are of variable length, uniform spacing only is required along the printing line.
The other drum 29 has spaced circumferentially thereon a series of separate type forms for printing figures, as shown 1n Fig. 11, adapted for impressing an amount on the Work as shown 1n Fig.' 13. In the l use of this type drum also the relative spacing an'd the feeding of the work in Writing a legend is uniform, but less than that required when printing with the Word type drum 28. 4and suitable feeding mechanism is provided for automatically feeding the work the required distance as hereafter described.
It is apparent from the above description that rotary adjustment of shaft 24 through an angle of approximately 180 degrees tends to raise one drum'to an inoperative position and to lower the other to printing position, by reason of the eccentric mounting on the bearing sleeve. as illustrated in Figs. 6 and 9, and it is desirable at the same time to shift the drumsl longitudinally to bring the left hand end of the type forms of each to a common point as desirable, for example, when changing from one drum to another in completing a single legend as illustrated in Fig. 15. To this end shaft 24 with the eccentrics and drums carried thereby is slidable longitudinally in its bearings, j as indicated in Figs. 6 and 9, to place the types scribed below. To retain these parts in one or the other adjusted position, knob '25 is preferably supplied with a spring pressed plunger 25, Fig. 1, engageable in recesses ma helical shoulder 25h on the casing `which may be provided with suitable indicia for indicating the positions.
The platen means comprises preferably a platen ever 35, Figs. 4 and ,12, having oppositelydisposed trunnions 36 and 37 resting-in bearings 38 and 39 on the Walls of the base. The forward end of the lever is elongated and formed with a T slot or channel l() in which is longitudinally slidable a lilock 41, Figs. 4 and. 10, the ,upper side. of which, projecting above the lever, com rises impression surfaces 42 and 43 for the gule and Word types, respectively. Means are preferably providedv as hereafter described for sliding the platen on the lever in accordance with the selection of a drum to bring the appropriate platen surface to printing position. f
The operating means for pivotally swinging the platen lever to produce a rinting impression of the Work against tiie type com rises, preferably, an angular extension 44, ig, 12, on the rear end of the lever carrying an adjustable screw 45. The lat-ter engages the lowerend of a plunger 46 slidingvertically in abearing sleeve 47 carried by the easing. `The upper end of this plunger supports a roller 4'8 engaging the periphery of a cam 49 fixed on a transverse s'haft 50 rotating at its end in bearings 51 and 52 on the casing. Means are provided for centering a selected type 'form in printing position conia' prising the centering wheel 10T described 'above with the notched periphery of which cooperates the suitably shaped end 121 of a bar 122 having a slotted portion 123 embracing the pin'83 described above. The rear end of the bar is pivotally connected at 123 with a lever 124 the other end of which cooperates with a lcam 125 fixed on shaft 50 'so that at each operation of the latter the end 121 of the bar is projected forwardly and centers thc drum and type form.
A means for inking the type -forms comprises a pair of inking rolls 126 and 127 rotatably supported on arms 128 and 129 respectively which are pivotally supported at their other ends by bracket means on tlie casing, spring means being provided for normally maintaining' the' rolls in contact with the type, as well understood in the art.'
In order, however, to disengage the rolls from the type when the latter are shifted during the longitudinal movement of the drum, each arm 128 and 129 is provided with a llug carrying a pin 130 positioned to ride on the periphery of cam disc 78. The portions of the latter opposite pins 130, when either` of the drums is in printing position, are cut away `to allow the rolls to rest on the typei lVhenfhowever, disc 78 is rotated durihg the longitudinal movement of the drums for replacing one with another 'lin printing-positi n, thehigher portions of the disc engaging he pin, carry the rolls temporarily out of contact with the type during such adjusting movement.

We claim as our invention: 1. A printing apparatus comprising a plurality of rotary type carriers each provided with a plurality of typeforms, adjustable means for moving said carriers transversely of theaxis of rotation thereof to bringthem selectively to printing pbsition, manipula-' tive vmeans for rotating a selected carrier to bring the type forms,y thereof selectively 'to the printing point, and operating means for i eti'ec'tin an impression of the selected-typel formi i 7 f '2. .4. A printing apparatus comprising a plurality of rotary type drums each provided with a plurality of type forms, spaced circumferentially thereon, adjustable means for shifting said drums along and transversely of the rotary axes thereof to bring said drums selectively to printing position, manipulative means for rotating the selected drum to bring the type forms thereof selec- -Atively to a common printing point, platen means, and operating means effecting a relative impressing movement of the selected drum and platen means.
5. A printing apparatus comprising a plurality of type carriers each provided with a plurality'of type forms, `adjustable feeding mechanism, adjustable means for moving said carriers selectively to printing position and for adjusting said feeding mechanism, manipulative means for moving a selected carrier to bring the type vforms thereof selectively toa common printing point, and operating means for eifecting an impression of the selected type form and actuating said feeding mechanism.

A printing apparatus comprisinga plurality of rotary type drums each provided with a plurality of type forms, spaced circumferentially thereon, .adjustable feeding mechanism, adjustable means for shifting said ,drums along and transversely of the rotary axes thereof to bring said drums selectively to printing position and for adjusting said feeding mechanism, platen means, manipulative means for rotating the selected drum-to bring the type forms thereof selectively opposite said platen means, and opera relative impressing movement of the selected drum and platen means.
