` EARTH-Beams SAMPLER.
Application med august 11, 1923. serial No.y 656,911.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, JACOB STJJIGH and REARL F. CHOATE, citizens of the United States, residing at Taft, in -the county of Kern and State of California, have inventf ed certain new and useful Improvements in Earth-Boring Samplers; and we do hereby decla-re the following to be a full, clear,- and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
, The object of the present invention is the provision of means for obtaining 'a sample or specimen of the strata through which an opening is bored in the formation' of an artesian or oil well.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departingl from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a device embodying the invention,
lFigure 2 is a view of the cutting end,
Figure 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a detail portion of the sampling tube.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of .the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates the sampling tube which. may be of any capacity\ and which is open at its lower end and closed at its upper end which is reduced, as indicated at 2, and provided with a vent opening 3 which is controlledvby means of a valve 4. A casing 5 encloses the sampling tube 1 and is coupled at its upper end to an operating rod or bar 6 which 1s adapted to be rotated in any preferred manner. A
-sleeve 7 encircles the reduced portion 2 of the sampling tube and ball bearings 8 are interposed between the sleeve 7 and the reduced end portion 2, said sleeve being seview 'of' the upper cured within the upper portion of the cas-Y mg 5. The operating rod or bar 6 -is formed withv an opening occupied by a pipe 9 throu h which water or other medium is supplied to facilitate the operation of the device. By-pass pipes 10 connect the lower end of the pipe 9 with the-upper portion of vthe casing V5 but below sleeve 7, .whereby or bar 6 is rotated and the cutter 11 separates a portion of the strata in the form of.
a cane which enters the tube 1, the air displaced escaping through the vent opening 3. The contact of the sampling tube 1 with the earth or strata revents rotation there- -of and the annular cutter 11 separates a consisting 0f a casing, an operating means for the casing, a sampling tube located within the casing, means within the casing supporting said sampling tube, said casing having cutting means at its lower end, and means of fluid supply through said operatin means having a pipe extending exterivor y of the casing and having communication with the interior of the casing below said supporting means.
2. A device of the character specified consisting of a casing havin substantially the same interior. diameter t roghout, an operating means connected to the casing, a sampling tube located'. within the casing, said sampling tube having a reduced por: tion at its upper end, means within the casing .surrounding said reduced portion and supporting said sampling tube, said reduced cation with the interior lof the casing below portion at its upper end having a vent said supporting means. opening therethrough, said casing having In testimony whereof we aix our sgna- 10 .Y cutting means at its lower end and means tures. p
